Colleagues,   It is my pleasure to welcome you to Phoenix, Arizona for the 2017 AANEM Annual Meeting. This is sure to be one of the best AANEM meetings with so much to offer in terms of educational content. You are going to find it hard to choose from all the great sessions. While at the meeting, be sure to take advantage of several sessions that we have never offered; including a session on respiratory care (Thursday at 1:30 PM) and genetic testing (Wednesday 1:30 PM). The Procedural US Crossfires course on Thursday morning (8:00 AM - 9:30 AM) will have experts debating about the usefulness of ultrasound. Come watch the fireworks! As you know, there has been a lot happening with new treatment breakthroughs so be sure to attend and learn the latest news on SMA, MD, ALS, and more. My Plenary sessions on Enhancing the Understanding, Diagnosis and Management of Painful Neuromuscular Conditions features experts that will be sure to give you some great take-homes to improve your practice.

As our attendees often say, this meeting is an opportunity to engage with colleagues and experts across the scope of EDX and NM medicine, so be sure to join me at the President’s Reception Wednesday night at 5:30 PM in Grand Canyon 6-8 and the Abstract Award Winners’ Reception on Thursday at 5:30 PM in Grand Sonoran E-F. Wednesday September 13 Wednesday September 13Pompe disease is a rare genetically defined lysosomal storage disorder that occurs in people of all ages with varying severity. While both GAA enzyme and gene panel testing options are available, Pompe disease is frequently missed in patients who suffer from the late onset form of the disease due to symptoms that commonly overlap with other NM disorders such as limb girdle muscular dystrophy or polymyositis. This forum will provide an experience based review of patients that were misdiagnosed with a NM disorder in order to illustrate the complex diagnostic journey and opportunities for improved identification of Pompe disease patients.

Target Audience: NM specialty physicians and other healthcare providers, both pediatric and adult.

Agenda/ Objectives: • Understand the diagnostic challenges for Pompe Disease

patients through experience based cases• Recognize the symptoms and points in the diagnostic

journey where patients could have received a genetically confirmed diagnosis sooner

• Review the role of genetic panel testing for patients with generalized muscle weakness or idiopathic myositis

• Apply experienced based learnings to reduce diagnostic delays in the future for patients with rare neuromuscular disorders

This activity is sponsored by Sanofi Genzyme. This activity is not part of the official scientific program of AANEM.

AANEM CME Programming: It is the policy of the AANEM to ensure balance, independence, objectivity and scientific rigor in all of its educational activities. This program is for scientific and educational purposes only and will not, directly or indirectly, promote the interests of any commercial interest. All CME sessions that are offered as part of the official AANEM Annual Meeting program are developed and implemented solely by the AANEM Annual Meeting education planning committees and the AANEM staff. Education planning committees are responsible for: identifying educational needs and gaps between current and ideal performance, competencies and patient outcomes; determining teaching methods; selecting presentation topics, choosing faculty, establishing objectives; and determining format for the presentation of content. Educational materials cannot contain any advertising, corporate logo, trade name, or product-group message. All scientific research referred to, reported or used in support of justification of a patient care recommendation will conform to generally accepted standards of experimental design, data collection and analysis. Speakers are requested to provide a balanced view of therapeutic options, using generic names in presentations to contribute to impartiality. If content includes trade names, speakers are instructed to incorporate the trade names from several companies.

Specific disclosure information for all speakers, planning committee members and course chairs participating in the 2017 Annual Meeting is provided in the Disclosure Index at the registration desk or online at www.aanem.org/disclosures.

Industry Forums: Industry Forums are commercially supported educational activities held in conjunction with the AANEM Annual Meeting. These satellite symposia sessions are not part of the AANEM’s official annual meeting program and are planned by an outside company or party. These sessions are clearly labeled as Industry Forums to allow the participant to be fully aware of any bias in the presentations. Seating at sessions is limited, and food is provided by the AANEM to Industry Forum attendees on a first-come, first-served basis.
