Problem: Roll Away Tires

• PTSB investigates several incidences of tire separation on a yearly bases.

• They have resulted in injuries and property damages. Single tire/wheel or dual wheel sets have tremendous energy due to weight and speed.

GOAL: ELIMINATE WHEEL DETACHMENTS

PLAN:

•Provide Bus Operators and Maintenance Personnel with an easy, visible inspection of the lug nuts to:

• determine they are secure• indentify brake or bearing issues

GOAL: ELIMINATE WHEEL DETACHMENTS

PROCESS:

Install a plastic arrow on all wheel lugs that point in a circular direction and is heat sensitive. Movement of the arrow indicates a loose lug. Blistering of the arrow indicates substantial heat.

GOAL: ELIMINATE WHEEL DETACHMENTS

RESULTS:

• Easily identifies loose lug nuts.

• Easily identifies “hot wheels”, caused by either bearing failure or brake drag.

Goal: Learn from the facts

Process:

What is an ECM ?

How does it work ?

Goal: Learn from the facts

Process:

What is it? The ECM is an electronic control module that collects data from the bus that can be used to determine:

-speed of the bus, rate of throttle, rate of braking, and timing of these events. VERY useful for accident investigations.

Goal: Learn from the facts

Process:

Where is it?

It is located on the block of Detroit Diesel engines on transit and coach buses.
