Eighteen years. You might notice the similarity in the photos. Rabbi Gurvis looks remarkably the same now as then, except his glasses are now smaller and his shirt is blue. Eighteen years. Eighteen years of writing Bulletin articles. Here is the first Bulletin article penned by Rabbi Gurvis when he arrived at Temple Shalom in 1999. (Thank you to the Archive Custodians!) Rabbi Gurvis, thank you for your 18 years of imparting Jewish precepts, illuminations, words of wisdom, and sharing from the heart. -The Editor

    President Scott Birnbaum

My First Year as President As I am about to conclude my first year as Temple President, here is a multiple-choice question about my experience so far: Being President of Temple Shalom has been . . . (a) Very challenging and stressful (b) Exciting (c) Rewarding (d) A lot harder than I thought (e) All of the above. The correct answer is, needless to say, (e). Even apart from the rabbinic transition we are currently undergoing, this has been an unprecedented year of change at the temple. I have been extraordinarily proud of how well the congregation has reacted to all of our changes, and how much we have accomplished this year, about which much is written elsewhere in this bulletin. The upcoming year will, I am certain, continue to see change and challenge, but I am both extremely excited and supremely confident about what the future holds for Temple Shalom. Without a doubt, we benefit from an amazingly talented, creative, and hardworking clergy and staff, as well as highly intelligent and dedicated lay leadership. But most of all, the future of Temple Shalom is assured because of our diverse and committed members, who come together and find meaning by forming a welcoming congregation of learning, caring and community rooted in our people’s values. As we enter the summer, I offer my sincere thanks to our members for your commitment and support. As always, I welcome your questions, comments and advice. Scott Birnbaum

Want to make a difference? Volunteer! Looking for a way to get involved at Temple Shalom and to build relationships with new people? There are ample opportunities to build a deeper connection with others while helping the kehillah (congregation). Opportunities for involvement range from one-time-only activities to ongoing involvement with one of our committees or groups. Here are some of the many ways you may volunteer:

    • Join a Temple Committee.

    • Usher at a Friday night service.

    • Help with a Caring Community initiative and support congregants during difficult times and joyous occasions.

    • Participate in one of the Social Action Committee’s numerous volunteer opportunities throughout the year, such as Mitzvah Mall, Food Drives, etc.

    • Volunteer at SHACHARIT Purim Palooza or other programs. If you would like to become involved or find out more about a particular group or committee, please visit our webpage at www.templeshalom.org or contact our executive director, Ellie Goldman, at [email protected] or (617) 332-9550 who will be happy to help.

Ellie Goldman, Executive Director Hello, Temple Shalom Family. The days are finally getting longer and warmer, and our program year is coming to a close. It has been a season of changes at Temple Shalom and we are excited for the quiet of summer and a chance to get our ducks in a row before the High Holy Days arrive in September. In May, we welcomed two new members of our staff. Bridget Kinahan has joined the team as our morning Greeter/Receptionist. Bridget is staffing the reception desk from 8:30 a.m.–2 p.m. Bridget is already getting settled and is quickly learning the ins and outs of synagogue happenings. Additionally, Lucy Dube has taken over the role of controller from Lisa Aliquo. Lucy has been our part-time bookkeeper since the fall and we are very pleased to have her on a more regular basis. Lucy is available to answer any billing or accounts questions and can be reached at [email protected]. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Congregational Meeting and Shabbat Dinner on June 16 when we will install our new officers and confirm the budget for next year. Soon after that, you will be receiving your new membership information for the coming year and then the High Holy Days Packet will be in your mailboxes before you know it. Although temple activities slow down in the summer, we hope to see everyone on Shabbat. Erev Shabbat services will move to the Chapel on June 23 and will begin at 7:30 p.m. for the duration of the summer. Thank you all for a wonderful first five months as your executive director. The time has truly flown by and I continue to be so honored to work in this congregation. L’shalom, Ellie Goldman

    Nursery School Johanna Perlin, Director

“Regular time outdoors in nature is one time-tested way to fuel creativity.” -Christine Kiewra “Nature effectively invites the hands-on, messy play that nourishes children’s creative problem-solving while also providing real challenges.” -Ellen Veselack

Drop by for a morning visit to see how the children learn in our outdoor classroom.

Reflecting on the school year 2016–2017. It was a busy and rewarding year. Our Nursery School and our staff were recognized locally and nationally for the work we have done to connect children with nature. Seventy-two children attended the Nursery School. Sixty-three percent of our families are Temple Shalom members.

Building community. Nursery School Shabbat dinner, Pesach celebrations, beginning BBQ and February Havdalah Parent Socials, individual class potluck dinners, Dads’ Night Out, Moms’ Night Out Oscar Party, informal play dates, and an end-of-the-year picnic provided opportunities for family learning and for making social connections. Our February Havdalah Parent Social was co-sponsored with FwYC and the time aligned with Taste of Camp After Dark to make it more accessible for all Temple Shalom families and their children (of different ages) to participate. A big thank you to our amazing Steering Committee Co-Chairs Melanie Hildebrandt, Abby Yelensky and Jackie Nudelman, class parents and parent volunteers for making these programs possible.

Our program was chosen by Nature Explore to be the focus of three blog posts describing the work we do. Go to www.natureexplore.org and select blogs posted in November and January. Our teachers are committed to designing their learning spaces and structuring curriculum that enables children of different abilities and learning orientation to thrive.

Staff news. Five of our staff achieved EEC (Early Education and Care) teacher certification this year. In addition to our own internal training classes, staff members participated in several Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP) communities of practice and workshops to strengthen and expand their ability to develop innovative learning experiences. Lead Toddler Teacher Kat Horion and I presented a nature workshop in March at the EJE-RJ National Early Childhood Conference held in Chicago. A colleague and I were commissioned by CJP to present a workshop at Hebrew College at the Early Childhood Conference in December on “Taking it Outside” which demonstrated the process of translating classroom curriculum for use outdoors within a Jewish lens. Kat Horion and I presented a nature workshop in our Nursery School outdoor space in May for CJP. CJP also subsidized our expenses to provide consult hours to Boston-area Jewish nursery schools on developing/expanding their outdoor play spaces to support interactions with nature. Teacher Sabrina Burke participated in this year ’s Boston Haifa educators’ trip to Israel. She not only had a life-changing experience—she brought back wonderful curriculum ideas for strengthening the children’s connection to Israel.

Nursery School Information. We have one two-morning space available in our Toddler program and one space open in our Transition to Kindergarten class. Call for more information.

Other news. Our new greenhouse will be installed this summer.

A special thank you to Rabbi Eric Gurvis for 18 years of singing in the whale, blowing shofar, playing Moses leading the “Israelites” out of Egypt, Shabbat celebrations, and spiritual support. We will miss you, and we wish you success wherever your life journey takes you. Thank you to Rabbi Allison Berry, Cantor Peter Halpern and Rabbi Laura Abrasley for enriching our Friday Shabbats and Jewish holiday celebrations; to Al White and Alonzo Batista for ensuring that our physical space looks attractive and our extra programming goes smoothly; and to Executive Director Ellie Goldman for always making time to listen and finding the “right” solution.

"As you teach—you learn." -Midrash Tehillim

It is a great honor to teach and to learn from the Temple Shalom community. For the past four years, I have served as the Rabbi and Educator of the SHACHARIT education program. Together, we have created a vision for Jewish learning that is innovative, inclusive, flexible, and has deepened the Jewish knowledge and connections of our children. I am deeply proud of what we have accomplished and what we have learned together.

My mentor and partner in this endeavor has been Rabbi Eric Gurvis. His rabbinate has been defined by his love and passion for Jewish education and most of all for our young people. I am personally grateful for all I have learned from Rabbi Gurvis and for how he has lovingly supported so many hundreds of children throughout his time at Temple Shalom. The entire education staff wish him a profound thank you. Words are not enough to express our respect and appreciation for all he has given to us and to the Temple Shalom community. May he continue to go from strength to strength.

As I write this article, we are preparing to close out our education year. In just a few weeks, my role at Temple Shalom will transition and I will lead the interim clergy team for our synagogue with partnership and support from Rabbi Laura Abrasley and Cantor Peter Halpern. Although I will no longer work on the day-to-day running of the education program, I look forward to continuing the partnership with our community and staff to actualize our vision for innovative, inclusive and caring Jewish learning and education at Temple Shalom.

As always, our dedicated and talented staff will be partners in the endeavor of creating meaningful and relevant Jewish learning experiences for our children and families. Thank you to our teachers—in fact there are now over 25 of them—who work tirelessly to support our children and whose love of Judaism is apparent in their carefully planned lessons and loving attention to detail.

Thank you to our 30-plus Madrichim—teen teaching assistants—who wake up early every Sunday morning to bring their joy of Jewish learning to our community.

Thank you to Lori Leiderman, our Director of Grades K–2, whose many years of service and dedication to the Temple Shalom community are a profound statement of love and belief in Jewish education.

Thank you to Emily Kieval, our Inclusion Coordinator, and Caroline Dorn, our Marketing and Administrative Assistant. Each of them bring a sense of humor, sensitivity and a thoughtful approach of caring about each and every child in our building that is beyond compare.

And of course, I am thrilled Liz Shiro, our current Director of Grades 3–6 and Hebrew, will be stepping up to take on the role of SHACHARIT Education Director beginning on July 1. Liz arrived at Temple Shalom four years ago with a wealth of Jewish education experience and a Master's Degree in Jewish Education from the Brandeis Delet Program. She will continue to enrich SHACHARIT with her organizational skills, thoughtful mentoring of our teaching staff, love of our children, and her vision for learning and education. Thank you, Liz, for everything you bring to the Temple Shalom community.

Looking ahead: We are excited to welcome new additions to our team of professional educators and will share these hires with the community as they are confirmed during the summer months. Please be on the look-out for further information.

The most important goal I have set for myself over the months ahead is to continue to build and deepen relationships with members of the Temple Shalom community. Many members of the clergy and staff are at the temple over the summer. Please reach out to us, and especially to me, for coffee, conversation and to share your questions, feedback and your Jewish journey with us.

As my role at Temple Shalom transitions, I hope to continue to teach and also to learn from each of you. This cycle of teaching, learning, and hopefully and ultimately growth on both sides of the teacher/student relationship is my personal understanding of what a rabbi is supposed to do. It is through this cycle we express and dive into our own relationships, joys, struggles, and ultimately our humanity. Thank you to everyone who makes this process possible in our community. Let us continue to grow as a synagogue as we teach and learn from one another! May we go from strength to strength.

Yesterday, I texted my sister, “Can I go back to work yet?” She texted back, “Tomorrow.” This text was in response to what felt like a very long Passover/School Vacation break of being home with my three-year-old twins; one who had already spilled on the floor three times that day and the other who had cried multiple times because she didn’t get to go first, or I didn’t hold her hand right, or her matzah broke. People ask me, “How do I do it?” The answer is: I go to work and I love my job! Of course, I love my girls and I am thankful for them every day, but at Temple Shalom, I can do meaningful work, make change in the community and help our children find their connection to Judaism. I am finishing my fourth year at Temple Shalom as one of the educators in the SHACHARIT program and it is incredible to think back to where we were when I started. The SHACHARIT program has developed into a fabulous program under Rabbi Berry’s leadership, and our families are happy, our kids are learning and we are growing! Sunday mornings are a hive of activity between adults schmoozing with cups of coffee in their hands, our big kids smiling as they switch classes between Core Judaica and Chugim (electives), and our youngest children full of energy as they go to the chapel for music or to class from Family T’Filah (prayer). During the week, as I visit our small group Hebrew classes, I hear kids chanting prayers, playing Hebrew games and creating Hebrew resources on the iPads for themselves and their peers. We no longer hear grumbles of “Why do I have to do this?” or “I’m so bored!” Our kids are excited and happy to be at Temple Shalom! I, too, am excited and happy to be at Temple Shalom! Beginning in July, I look forward to stepping up as the new SHACHARIT Education Director. I am thankful for the guidance and support I have received from Rabbi Berry over the past several years. As Rabbi Berry transitions into her new position on our clergy team, I am grateful she will be at Temple Shalom and continue to support our staff and SHACHARIT families as I transition into my new role. Looking to the future: My goal for the year ahead is to continue to grow and develop our already successful SHACHARIT program. All the education staff value the opportunity to continuously learn and develop their skills. This past year, as part of my own professional development, I participated in a Clinical Mentoring program at Hebrew College, where I honed my own understanding of how to better support and mentor teachers. I was grateful for the opportunity and I plan on using what I learned to deepen the preparation and mentoring we provide to all of our staff. Other important areas of focus will be the creation of a longer term Judaic curriculum for Grades 3–6, and some deeper exploration and needs assessment of our current 6

th grade program and how we can continue to support the unique developmental stage of this age group.

I am excited to start at Temple Shalom full-time this summer as the SHACHARIT Education Director. If we have not had the opportunity to connect in a while or we have not personally met, join me for a cup of coffee sometime in July or August! You can reach me at [email protected]. L’Shalom, (To peace), Liz Shiro

    Upcoming Programs

Social Action Lend a Hand to Grad Bag Boston Temple Shalom participates in Grad Bag Boston again this summer. This is a great opportunity to help package dorm supplies for first-generation and low-income students heading to college in the fall. The folding and packing will take place June 25–30. Watch the weekly emails for more details. For more information on the amazing Grad Bag story and project, go to www.gradbag.org/our-story/.

Book Club Monday, June 19 at 7:30 p.m. Monday, August 14 at 7:30 p.m. Temple Shalom’s June 19 book club literary adventure takes its members to Rumania of the late 1930s when we read and then discuss Aharon Appelfeld’s two novellas, “Badenheim 1939” and “To the Land of the Cattails.” Both of these literary masterpieces focus on the impact of the Nazi regime on the lives of ordinary Jewish citizens as the noose leading to the “Final Solution” gradually tightens. Our discussion will start at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Mark and Janet Gottesman, 43 Stearns Street, Newton Centre, For more information, call Mark at (617) 964-6143. The temple’s August 14 book club discussion will focus on Geraldine Brooks’ novel, “The Secret Chord.” In this, her latest work of historical fiction, Brook’s examines the life of the biblical King David—a book which the New York Times described as “. . . a thundering, gritty, emotionally devastating reconsideration of the story of King David.” Our discussion will start at 7 p.m. at the Shing Yee Chinese restaurant, located at 1255 Washington Street, West Newton. All Temple Shalom’s members are welcome to join any and all of our bi-monthly discussions.

Archives We at the Temple Archives continue gathering materials for preservation. As the program year concludes, please check if you have in your possession:

    • Program booklets

    • Committee or team meeting minutes

    • Year-end reports and activity summaries

    • As we rely more on our computers, and less on printed notes, help us track and preserve all the amazing events on our calendar! Please bring materials for the Archives to the temple office. Peggy Freedman and Rhoda Ben-Gai

Bonim A Year of Jewish Music, History and Politics The Boston Globe reporters and columnists—Scot Lehigh, Frank Phillips, and Joshua Miller—delivered their pre-election analyses of the Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton race

in September, 2016. The Boston Globe columnist Yvonne Abraham discussed life after the election for Bonim last December (see photo). In January, Cantor Peter Halpern and soprano Kim Leeds, accompanied by pianist Timothy Steele, entertained with a performance of Broadway, comedy, Yiddish, and light opera. Bonim's season ended in March with food, glorious food, as Dave Andelman of TV's Phantom Gourmet revealed his favorite restaurants.

Social Action Making College Accessible For All On April 26, Temple Shalom presented a night with representatives from Let's Get Ready and Alray Scholars Program. These organizations support youth of all socio-economic levels in entering and graduating from college. The program panel included (shown from left to right): Kim Freedman from Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology, moderator; Selam Mola and Lisa Ulrich from Let's Get Ready; Neil Swidey and Jasmin Johnson from Alray Scholars Fund.

A Memorable Celebration Honors Rabbi Gurvis An overflow crowd paid tribute to Senior Rabbi Eric Gurvis on May 13. Thank you to everyone for your participation and enthusiasm! Former Temple Shalom President Mark Gottesman served as master of ceremonies. Newton Mayor Setti Warren and visiting guests offered in-person and video tributes. Former Associate Rabbis Matt Cutler, Joel Sisenwine, David Widzer, and Neil Hirsch led the Havdalah service. Rabbis Allison Berry and Laura Abrasley, Cantor Peter Halpern and past presidents led the Motzi blessing. Temple member Sarah Ze’eva Berman sang during the event. Remarks and presentation of gifts followed the celebration dinner:

    • An Adult Education Fund was established in Rabbi Gurvis’ honor as he becomes Rabbi Emeritus following 18 years as Senior Rabbi.

    • A framed print of the Western Wall by artist Michael Bogdanow will be displayed with a commemorative plaque in Room 101.

    • Brass leaves, presented by Mark Gottesman, will be added to the Tree of Life in our lobby to honor Rabbi Eric and Laura Gurvis and their new grandson.

    • The Temple Shalom Scrapbook of Memory with congregants’ recollections and good wishes was arranged and presented by Marion Pollock, Julie Vanek and Marguerite Beaser.

    • A gift of appreciation to Laura Gurvis was presented by Michelle Alkon and Marguerite Beaser on behalf of Sisterhood for her contributions to Sisterhood and Temple Shalom.

The program concluded with remarks by Rabbi Gurvis’ friend, Rabbi Howard Jaffe of Temple Isaiah of Lexington, a tribute by the Gurvis children and closing remarks by Rabbi Gurvis. We offer special thanks to Temple Shalom Board members, professional, administrative and custodial staff, Garden Club floral arrangers, volunteer greeters, bakers, bartenders, and chocolate candy maker, Marion Pollock. We look forward to Rabbi Gurvis serving as our Rabbi Emeritus. Susan Dansker and Sharon Sholkin, Co-Chairs

Anita Winer Open Your Eyes Fund for the Arts

This year’s theme was "Entering the Heart of Stories" and featured Rabbi Dr. Ariel Burger as our Scholar/Artist-in-Residence (October 2016–May 2017) Shown above is the closing session of the first Havurah series with Rabbi Burger—the art-making session, based on the reading of the "Lost Princess" story by Rabbi Nachman. Visualized is the communal expression of a key point in the story portrayed in three dimensions. It was indeed an unusual, left-side of the brain approach to learning, and very engaging for the participants.

Screening of the award-winning film "Raise the Roof" with a panel of artists, including the producer and director of the film (December 2016).

Inclusion “Braced” by Alyson Gerber In Alyson Gerber’s new book, “Braced,” a 12-year-old girl named Rachel suffers from scoliosis and must wear a back brace for 23 hours a day, while also dealing with issues of inclusion, friendship and resilience. On April 30, Temple Shalom hosted a full day of programming with Alyson Gerber, supported by the Inclusive Community Task Force and a generous grant from the Ruderman Synagogue Inclusion Project. Ms. Gerber met with three groups of temple constituents including the SHACHARIT Grade 5 family program, the Grade 6 Rosh Chodesh girls’ group and an afternoon book signing open to the community. In addition to reading an excerpt from “Braced,” Ms. Gerber answered questions about being a young person with a physical challenge, inclusion of people with disabilities and how she came to be an author. Having worn a back brace herself for scoliosis from the ages of 11 to 13 years, Ms. Gerber was able to speak from personal experience to connect with our community with her stories and reflections. Our young students, in particular, were engaged and inspired.
