Good morning!
I hope you’ve had a great week! Just a few things today:
We are finishing up our Rooted series this Wednesday. We’ve really enjoyed studying Stephen, Noah, and Paul and how they stayed rooted in their faith through trials. We will conclude this week with a look at John.
This Fall quarter, we will look at the book of James on Wednesday nights and talk about practical ways for us to grow in our faith. We are also excited to start a brand new quarter on Sunday mornings next week! The high schoolers will meet downstairs with Jim Robinson and study 1Timothy and the middle schoolers will meet upstairs in room 214 with the youth deacons and special guests and study Romans!
That’s all I have for this week. Have a great Sunday! Tucker

TEXT: Genesis 15-16
Introduction: One of the most difficult tests of faith is when God seems unresponsive.
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. James 1:2-3 ESV

What do you think it m
eans to be “godly?” Can you nam
e a few people that seem
like godly people? Som
etimes, our em
otions or the way w
e feel towards others
isn’t so godly. Here’s an exam
ple. Present something green to your children.
What color is this? (green) w
hat emotion do you feel w
hen you see this color? H
ave you ever heard the saying, “green with envy?” W
hat do you think it means?
What does it m
ean to have envy or jealousy?
People who know
a lot about words and w
here they come from
think that the term
“green with envy” began w
ith the Greeks. The G
reeks believed that em
otions came from
the organs in their bodies. Do you know
where your liver is
in your body? The liver produces bile, which is a yellow
-green color, and it helps us get rid of w
aste, like food. So when people becam
e jealous, they thought it was
because the liver was producing too m
uch bile, and it caused their faces to turn slightly green! Jealousy is such a yucky thing. Som
e people like to say that when
others are jealous, the “Green-Eyed M
onster” has gotten them. H
ave you ever felt like the G
reen-Eyed Monster has gotten ahold of you?
Let’s talk about a story in the Bible? Do you rem
ember w
ho was jealous of D
avid? (K
ing Saul) Why do you think K
ing Saul was jealous of D
avid? (Because David
was a great w
arrior and the people loved him.) D
o you remem
ber what happened
after King Saul died? (D
avid became king.)
Is jealousy always a bad thing? (K
ids may say yes.) The Bible says that G
od is a jealous god. (Read Exodus 34:14). Scripture plainly tells us that G
od is good and perfect. So jealousy m
ust not always be a bad thing. M
ost of the time in the Bible,
we read of G
od being jealous when H
e is telling the people to stop worshiping
false idols. When w
e’re jealous, we fear losing som
ething that is valuable or that m
eans a lot to us, right? So, when G
od becomes jealous, it m
eans that He doesn’t
want to lose us because w
e are valuable to Him
.
In 2 Corinthians 11:2, Paul says that he is “jealous for [the people] w
ith a godly jealousy.” This m
eans he saw the people behaving in w
ays that did not honor G
od, and he was jealous for them
to have a right relationship with Jesus.
We are not to be jealous and envious of other people in such a w
ay that we break
relationships with others. N
or are we to be m
ean and angry and act like King
Saul. We are to be jealous w
ith a godly jealousy, desiring all people to know Jesus
and walk w
ith him. W
e are not to be jealous OF people, but w
e are to be jealous FO
R people.
What can w
e learn from K
ing Saul? If we w
ant to be godly, we m
ust make every
effort to choose not to be jealous because of selfish reasons, but because we w
ant other people to know
Christ. Read 2 Peter 1:3.
Godliness
If using this guide in solitude, begin by thanking G
od in prayer for the tim
e to privately connect w
ith Him
. Ask the Spirit to guide you into truth as you spend tim
e in the W
ord. Write your answ
ers to the questions, using additional paper if needed.
If using this guide with others,
begin by
thanking
God
in prayer for this opportunity to be together. Ask the Spirit to guide you into truth as you spend tim
e in the Word. D
iscuss your answers to the questions.
Some people seem
to easily remem
ber birthdays and other key events. O
thers seem to have trouble rem
embering their ow
n phone number. W
hich one describes you? H
ave you always been that w
ay?
To begin, review the text for these devotionals - 2 Peter 1:1-10. Last m
onth w
e looked at perseverance/steadfastness/patience. The next in Peter’s list is godliness, w
hich is at the heart of enduring. Translations agree in translating the G
reek word, eusebeia, as godliness. It also appears in verse
3. Simply put it m
eans reverence. But don’t think of this to imply a solem
n face - no joy - type of disposition. Instead, it is a practical aw
areness of God
in every area of life.
John MacA
rthur wrote, “Josephus, the Jew
ish historian, contrasts this word
with eidololatreia, idolatry. Eusebeia, reverence, gives G
od His rightful place,
worships G
od as He ought to be w
orshiped. Idolatry does the opposite. W
hatever the Greeks said about the w
ord eusebeia, the Christians m
ade it greater. Paul says in 1 Tim
othy 4:8, ‘Godliness is profitable in all things.’ The
believer is to worship G
od, and love God, and adore G
od, not with stained
glass and organ music, but w
ith a life of reverence for God and devotion to
His holy w
ill. He is to do w
hat David did in Psalm
16, set the Lord always
before him. This is to be our com
mitm
ent.”
When are you distracted and struggle to keep an aw
areness of God? W
hy?
When are you m
ost aware of G
od? Why?
Read Psalm 16:8 and discuss how
to “set the LO
RD always before” you.
Read 2 Peter 1:1-10 together to begin.
Over the last few
months w
e’ve discussed and studied this set of verses to pull out som
e of the key themes that can help us in our w
alk with Jesus. This
week, w
e’re going to be looking at godliness. Before we do that, take som
e tim
e to look back on the attributes prior to godliness.
Have you been applying these attributes to your life and w
alk with the
Lord? Discuss.
So, what exactly is godliness? G
odliness is the ability to spot God in all kinds
of situations. Godliness goes along w
ith the idea of praying without ceasing
(1 Thess. 5:16-18). It is the notion that we are to see G
od at work w
ithin the m
oments in our life. The busy, the m
undane, and everything in between.
Do you see G
od working in your life on a daily basis? D
iscuss.
Along the sam
e lines of seeing God w
orking in your daily life, godliness also pushes us to a deeper pursuit w
ith Jesus. If you are actively looking to see G
od in your life in every mom
ent, you are - by default - going to follow
Him
even closer. Godliness is not an easy task, in fact it can be quite diffi-
cult. For us, it can be easy to get caught up in the mom
ent and ignore what
our true purpose is. That is exactly why Peter tells us to “m
ake every effort” (2 Peter 1:5).
What A
bout Us?
Why do you think it’s so difficult to see Jesus in the ordinary every day?
In what w
ays are you currently seeing God at w
ork in your life?
What are som
e ways you can be m
ore aware of G
od’s presence daily?
