That’s why we’ve created this planner to help you make the most of your time here. It puts information about campus resources, important dates, study tips, and even a handy map of the area right at your fingertips.

Whatever your goals and dreams, we’re dedicated to helping you reach them. The Dean of Students Office is here to provide you with personal and academic support. The office is located in West Hall 106 and can be reached at 651-523-2421. The HUSC (student government) office in Anderson 321 can be reached at [email protected] or 651-523-2455.

Hamline Undergraduate Student Congress (HUSC) is the student government of Hamline University. HUSC works with faculty, staff, and administration to make sure students’ voices are heard. Another part of HUSC’s job is the management and distribution of funds to the many student organizations on campus. Every undergraduate student is a member of HUSC—they can attend general assembly meetings to share their opinions and vote on resolutions being discussed. Aside from general members, there are approximately 30 elected and appointed positions within HUSC, including an executive board, representatives from each class, and residence hall representatives.

Academic supportAs a Hamline student, you’re expected to achieve success both in and outside of the classroom. It’s never too late to take the necessary steps to be academically successful, and it’s extremely important for your future. Here are some tips and strategies to help you succeed academically.

To get more information, help, advice, or support for your academics, please visit the following Hamline resources located in Bush Library:

Top 10 study skills1

Set goals! If you don’t know what you want to achieve as a student, you won’t know how to get there or if you’ve accomplished what you set out to do.

2 Use the HU Student Planner or an appointment book. If you keep all of your appointments, due dates, exam dates, and so on in your appointment book, you can use the space you save in your head to remember information that you’re learning in class.

3 Be an active reader. Be a text detective: Ask your text good questions, and it will yield good answers!

4 Participate in study groups and tutoring. Cooperative learning not only helps you by making you teach things to other students in the group, it is also a great way to find different perspectives on the material from other students or tutors.

5 Take notes. Use the Cornell method, outlining, mapping, or charting method to condense and synthesize readings, lectures, and discussion.

6 Organize your study materials. If you organize your materials as you proceed through a course, you will retrieve information with greater ease later. Use color coding to sort your folders and notebooks for visual cues

7 Go to office hours. Professors love to talk about class content as well as find out more about who you are. Don’t be shy!

8 Draft papers. Never turn in the first draft of a paper. Always leave time to rework it before your professor sees it. Take advantage of the Writing Center to assist you in your paper writing.

9 Slow down on tests. Anxiety makes you skip over parts of questions. Read every word carefully. Take your time. Exams are not races.

10 Get enough rest and eat properly. Go to bed at a decent hour and try to get a minimum of seven hours of sleep a night. Make sure that you’re eating healthy foods to keep up your energy.

For help with any of these tips, schedule an appointment with Lisa Nordeen or Patrick Hueller in Academic Success. Call 651-523-2912.

Principles of Community(Located in Conduct Code: All Students)Hamline University is committed to providing an environment conducive to:

• The acquisition of knowledge and the skill and wisdom to contribute to society in constructive ways.

• The creation and maintenance of an honest, just, intellectual, and educational atmosphere.

• The promotion of a diverse community through the creation of free-flowing discussion and analysis of ideas and values of many kinds.

• The protection of human rights, health, safety, welfare, and property of all members of the university, and the property of the university itself.

The university is further committed to fostering an educational environment based upon mutual respect. Such respect promotes a community in which all students feel free to pursue their education and co-curricular activities. Students are encouraged to respect the person and property of others and to listen and learn from differences rather than dismiss them.

Given the geographic, racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity that exists within the Hamline University community, the goal of achieving a safe, supportive, and productive educational experience for all students requires mutual respect for one another’s person and property and adherence to the policies and rules regarding student conduct. To this end, certain basic principles of community have been developed to govern the conduct of undergraduate and graduate students as members of the university community. Additionally, each academic unit has its own set of policies and procedures that governs the behavior of its respective members.

Hamline University holds you to high expectations as a Hamline student, both in and out of the classroom. Hamline students are responsible for knowing the content of all policies and should review them regularly. Following are some policies of which you should be aware.

Undergraduate Academic Honor CodeEvery member of the Hamline University community—students, faculty and staff members, and administrators—is responsible for upholding the highest standards of academic integrity at all times. The assumption that academic work is an honest reflection of one’s knowledge and skills is fundamental to the integrity of the university and to the value of a Hamline diploma.

Academic dishonesty includes any act that has the effect or intention of giving one student an unfair advantage over others in the completion or evaluation of academic work and/or inaccurately representing one’s academic work. Prohibited conduct under the code includes, but is not limited to, the following:

• Cheating.

• Plagiarizing.

• Making multiple submissions.

• Fabricating information.

• Using materials in an unauthorized manner.

• Misrepresenting academic records.

• Facilitating academic dishonesty.

Alcohol PolicyHamline University’s alcohol policy establishes an atmosphere of accountability and places upon those who use alcohol the responsibility to do so in an orderly manner consistent with both state and local laws and reasonable regulations by the university. The policy and procedures are consistent with state and local laws, in particular, those regarding legal age and alcohol. The legal age to consume and/or purchase alcohol in the state of Minnesota is 21.

Amnesty (Good Samaritan) Provision for Illegal Drug/Alcohol ViolationsWhen on campus and assisting an individual who is intoxicated or under the influence of illegal drugs and who needs medical assistance or assistance due to a sexual assault by alerting university staff (e.g., RA, residence professional staff member, Office of Safety and Security) or other appropriate authorities, neither the impaired individual nor those who seek such help will be subject to formal disciplinary action for violation of this policy.

Those calling for help must remain with the impaired student until university staff arrives. In order for this policy to apply, impaired students must follow the medical, health, and safety recommendations of the assisting staff. While no official disciplinary report will be filed in a student’s record, impaired individuals may be required by the dean of students to follow up by completing alcohol/drug education programs, chemical use assessment, and/or treatment depending on the level of concern for their health and safety. If a student does not comply with the recommendations of the dean, he or she will be subject to additional sanctions through a formal disciplinary process. The additional sanctions may include disciplinary probation up to and including suspension or expulsion.

Hamline University is committed to the health, well-being, and safety of its students. This amnesty (Good Samaritan) provision is designed to be used when, in the judgment of others, a student needs medical assistance because of drug or alcohol use or is impaired and needs assistance due to a sexual assault. It is intended to encourage students to come forward without fear of disciplinary action being taken against the impaired student or those who seek to help them. This provision is based upon the premise that failure to call for medical assistance in an alcohol or drug related emergency or an emergency involving a sexual assault is a violation of our community standards.

This amnesty (Good Samaritan) provision applies to alcohol/drug infractions only. It does not apply to the individuals responsible for infractions such as property damage, hazing, harassment, or physical or sexual assault. When necessary, the dean of students will render the final decision regarding whether the amnesty (Good Samaritan) provision can be applied in a particular situation. The university cannot guarantee that criminal charges will not be brought against the student if local law enforcement officials are required for assistance during the incident. In cases in which a student is transported to the hospital or a detoxification center for a medical emergency and is unconscious or otherwise in serious physical jeopardy, parental notification by university officials may occur, not for the purpose of disciplinary action but as a health and safety measure.

Sexual Misconduct PolicyHamline University collects its policies that address sexual misconduct by and toward students into one policy. This policy includes the prohibition of and procedures for addressing acts of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, and all forms of sexual misconduct. The Sexual Misconduct Policy provides guidance for individuals involved in incidents or allegations of sexual misconduct.

On-campus confidential resources include Counseling and Health Services and the campus chaplain.

Campus resources include Title IX coordinator, Dean of Students Office, Safety and Security, Human Resources, and Residential Life.

Discrimination and Harassment PolicyHamline University will not tolerate harassment or discrimination based on race,

color, gender, ethnic background, national origin, sexual orientation, marital or parental status, disability, religion, age, or veteran status in its employment of educational opportunities.

All policies, including these, are available at hamline.edu/policies. If you have questions regarding any policy, please contact the Dean of Students Office at 651-523-2421.

All policies are available at hamline.edu/policies. This is a listing of frequently used policies. Students are responsible for knowing the content of all policies and should review them regularly. If you have questions, please contact the Dean of Students Office at 651-523-2421.
