WELCOME FRIENDS & VISITORS TO OUR EUCHARISTIC CELEBRATION

Page 2: WELCOME FRIENDS VISITORS TO OUR …...So, let us take advantage of the remaining days of Advent to prepare—through prayer, reflection and good works — to celebrate again the coming

FROM FATHER CHUCK’S DESK This Sunday we welcome 6 adults into the first formal phase of their full initiation into the Roman Cath-

olic Church. At the Rite of Acceptance we will anoint Jason and Daniel with the Oil of Catechumen as they state their intention to embrace the faith, ultimately to receive Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at Easter. Sandra, Barbie, Andrea and Chris, already Baptized Catholics, state their intention toward re-ception of the remaining sacraments of initiation through Confirmation and Eucharist. It is an important day for them and for our parish community. These women and men began the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) process in September, learning about our faith, coming to Mass, discerning about God’s call to them. It often has been said that the RCIA process is a lifeblood of the Church, for not only does it bring forth new members into our midst it also gives all of us an opportunity to reflect on the gift of our faith and to go deeper into the mysteries it signifies. In celebrating the Rite of Acceptance, the parish agrees to journey with these women and men, to pray for them and, through their sponsors and the RCIA team, to teach and guide them. In the Baptism of infants there is a Welcome Rite where the par-ents are asked what name they have given their child, and what they ask of the Church for their child. The infant is then claimed for Christ, welcomed into the Church and signed with the sign of the cross. We do the same this Sunday for Daniel and Jason, now to be called catechumens and we pray similarly over Sandra, Barbie, Andrea and Chris, candidates for full initiation into the Church.

This Sunday is known as Gaudete Sunday, the third Sunday of Advent. Gaudete means Rejoice! in Latin. We get the term from the first word in the Entrance Antiphon for this day. It celebrates the fact that we are now better than half way through the waiting and penitential season of Advent. This year, since the 4th week of Advent is barely two days, Gaudete Sunday finds us two-thirds of the way through Advent. This beautiful season is the shortest of the liturgical year and, with all the hustle and bustle of the “world” around us, it seems to move extremely fast. So, let us take advantage of the remaining days of Advent to prepare—through prayer, reflection and good works — to celebrate again the coming of Emmanuel among us and the deeper presence of the Christ in our hearts, in our Church & in our world.

Christmas carries with it almost an “obligation” to be joyful. We’re supposed to be happy, to sing songs, to be excited to buy gifts and to decorate our homes filled with “ho, ho, ho” & “Merry Christmas”. Such a thing is good and right as we celebrate God’s great act of love in coming among us as one of us. Yet depending on what is happening in your life or what has happened in the past year or even what happened many years ago, for some people this time of year is painful or sad–made even worse by all the “joy” around them. Sometimes we need a place to acknowledge that sadness and to pray together that the light of Christ fills the darkness in our lives. Next Saturday we will have a special “Service of Light”, also called a “Blue Christmas” Service so that we can come together and lift our sorrow or our struggle, whatever that may be, into the loving care of the Lord, so that those who are hurting may be less burdened by it and perhaps enabled to experience some of the deeper joy of the season. All are welcome to this simple service of the Word and Light which will be at noon, followed by a meal of soup & bread. If you or someone you know, Catholic or not, is struggling with sadness this time of year, come to be raised up in prayer. For the parish is our home too, a place where our sorrows may be divided, and our joys multiplied.

Blessings to all this Third Week of Advent!

TENDREMOS COMIDA Y DULCES. ESPERAMOS SU PRESENCIA.
