CONFESSIONS

Monday & Thursday: 4:30-5:15pm Saturday: 4:00-5:00pm and by appointment

Dear Parishioners,

I hope everybody had a terrific and safe 4th of July celebration. This coming weekend, we have a busload of high school teens and core team members heading to the University of Arizona in Tucson for the Steubenville West conference. Please pray for our teens and core team members as they travel to this dynamic Catholic conference.

Welcome to Father Luis Espinoza! Fr. Luis comes from St. Gregory’s in Whittier. He has been ordained two years and he is very young, so it is nice to have a hard working and young priest in our midst. Please be sure to introduce yourself to Fr. Luis. We look forward to getting to know him better in the future. He will be introducing himself at all of the Masses this weekend.

If you see another unusual priest face around and you are wondering who he is, it might be Father Samuel Lepcha who comes from India. He is with us for the months of July and August only. Be sure to give him a warm greeting.

Our Pastoral Council members serve three-year terms. Diane Hernandez and Ryan Burke have agreed to stay on for three more years. Also joining the Pastoral Council in September is Dennis Puno. Thank you to the three of you for “yes” to serving on our Pastoral Council. We are grateful to you for your time, leadership and commitment.

One time a number of years ago, a young man come up to me after Mass and made some very pertinent suggestions to enhance the “friendliness” of our parish. He also gave me a 2-paged typed document on his ideas. He loves our parish but pointed out that many people “see the same people at Church week after week and don’t even know their names.” He suggested that all of us try to make it a point to not be so bashful and to introduce ourselves to people that we do not know. He said that we should make it point to get to know their names, too.

I’m thinking about what this young man had to say and I’m looking at his document and I’m wondering … can we do better in the area of hospitality? We have a terrific Greeter Ministry. Awesome! However, in essence, we all need to be ministers of hospitality … maybe not by being a greeter at the door, but by being a more outwardly loving presence in the pews. By extending ourselves further – going beyond our comfort zone.

When people come to Holy Family, do they feel the love? Are we greeting one another in the pews? Do we take a genuine interest in others? Do we sing with our hearts and souls and rejoice in the Lord? Food for thought. Let’s pray on it.

Travelling this summer? Check out masstimes.org for information on Masses while away. Don’t miss the Holy Eucharist! While travelling, please consider continuing to support your parish. Summer Blessings – Fr. Jim Bevacqua, Pastor 818-247-2222 x225 [email protected]

OUR FUTURE ASSOCIATE PRIEST

5

Fr. Marlon Mateo was born and raised in the Philippines. He came to Toronto, Canada in 1999 and was ordained on December 19, 2009.

He graduated from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago with a Masters degree in Divinity in 2007. Six year later, he obtained degree in Masters degree in Catholic Education Leadership from the University of San Francisco.

Fr. Marlon taught one year at Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, AZ. followed by four years at Mount Carmel High School in Chicago. He then taught religion and served as the Director of Mission Effectiveness at Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino for two years.

In addition, he presided at Masses at St. Mel’s Catholic Church in Woodland Hills prior to going to Holy Family Church in South Pasadena where he has served an associate priest for the past two years.

Fr. Marlon will be here August 1st.

SEMINARIANS STAYING AT HOLY FAMILY FOR SIX WEEKS Paul Collins is Second Year Pre-Theology Student at St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo, CA. He grew up in Upper Ojai. On completing High School, he attended Thomas Aquinas College for two and a half years, before withdrawing from the program there in order to spend time and discern with a missionary religious order in Cuzco, Peru. After spending a year

in Peru he returned to California, eventually completing a bachelor’s degree in psychology at California State University, Northridge. While studying at CSUN he worked as a bartender and church organist; other jobs he has held include lifeguard, construction hand, gardener, and cabinet carpenter. He entered St. John’s last fall, and looks forward to eventually serving both the LA Diocese, and, as a co-sponsored seminarian, the Archdiocese of the Military Services as well, as a US Navy Chaplain. He has been assigned to spend the remainder of the summer here at Holy Family in order to broaden his experience of the different areas of the LA Diocese.

David Agtarap will be entering St. John’s Seminary in Pre-Theology I this August. He came from Lexington, Kentucky and moved out to LA to originally pursue music and hip-hop dancing. His plans changed once he experienced God's love and mercy in eucharistic adoration. He was slowly introduced to silent adoration through a young adult group at St.Charles Borromeo (his home parish in North Hollywood) called The Vine. God provided him with Fr. Chan, the core team, and the young adults

who really pushed him o be a virtuous man. Furthermore, they inspired him to Deepen relationship with Christ and Mary. He will never forget what the priest told him, "It's not about how many people who come, it's not about the quality of the speakers, it's about Jesus...the best thing you can give to people is Jesus Himself. To bring God's Love and Mercy to the world is one of the most important things you will do in your vocation”. He wants to thank Fr. Jeffrey Baker for his support at St. Charles and Fr. Jim for allowing him to stay at Holy Family during his transition to St. Johns Seminary.

Conferencistas: George Delgado, MD/Miguel Angel Dominguez Mena/ Padre Eduardo Horning/ Arzobispo Salvatore Cordileone. Para más información y registración: https://celebratehv50.com/.
