WELCOME FATHER ROY REGASPI
This weekend we welcome Father Roy Regaspi, a newly ordained priest, who has been assigned to our parish. Father Roy was ordained May 28, 2011 at the
Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark.
Born in the Philippines 34 years ago, Fr. Regaspi attended Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall University. He has a master’s degrees in Divinity and Theology. We are happy to have Father Roy join our parish staff, please introduce yourself and give him a warm St. Joseph Welcome!
CONVOCATION TO GATHER ALL PRIESTS OF THE ARCHDIOCESE
The Eighth Convocation of Priests of the Archdiocese of Newark will take place Sunday afternoon, June 26, until Wednesday afternoon, June 29, at the Woodcliff Lake Hilton. The theme of the convocation, which is expected to bring together some 400 priests, is "Abide in Christ, Bear Much Fruit." Since the priests of the parish will be attending the convocation, there will be NO MORNING MASSES, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, June 27, 28, and 29. There will be a prayer service with the distribution of Holy Communion at 8:30 am on those three days. Please keep the priests of the Archdiocese in your prayers that this convocation will renew their dedication to Christ and His Church.

THE PASTOR’S COLUMN
1981 1981 was an important year. In June of that year I began serving here at Saint Joseph Parish as parochial vicar. I served here for twelve years, until 1993. However, there was another person that began an "assignment" here at Saint Joseph that same year, but a few months
earlier. That person began working here March 9, 1981. That person was Gloria DeStefano, our parish secretary. Since that date, Gloria has been the person behind the secretary's desk in the rectory/parish office. Gloria has served our parish from 1981 to 2011.
During that time she has worked on our Sunday bulletin; answered the phone; taken messages; greeted people at the door; filled out Mass cards; scheduled meetings; written letters; entered information into our sacramental registers; filled out baptism, confirmation, and marriage certificates; made arrangements for funerals; assisted in registering new parishioners; helped to keep our data base up to date; dealt with the firm that provides our contribution envelopes; tried to answer the ordinary and the unusual questions asked by callers; repeated the schedule of Masses for Christmas and Easter and holy days more times than she would care to remember; and she has done more!
After 30 years of faithful service, Gloria will be retiring from her "assignment" here at Saint Joseph Parish at the end of this month.
To give all of us an opportunity to thank Gloria for her service to our parish, there will be an Open House at the rectory on Wednesday afternoon, June 29, from 2 pm to 4 pm. We invite to stop by any time during those two hours and join us in thanking Gloria for her service and wishing her well in the future.
Refreshments will be served. Gloria's 30 years of service and dedication are truly worth celebrating!
This past weekend, June 12 & 13, there was a Farewell Reception for Father Tony. It took place in our school gym after all our Masses. I would like to thank Arlene Kennedy for organizing the reception and thank all those who assisted her in any way.
We are all sad to see Father Tony go. His leaving is a definite loss to our parish. But our loss will be a gain for Sacred Heart Parish in Haworth where Fr. Tony will serve as part time parochial vicar, and a gain for Bergen Catholic HS where he will serve as chaplain. If you would like to contact Father Tony his new address is:
Rev. Tony Ricarte, Sacred Heart Church 102 Park Street, Haworth, NJ 07641
(201-387-0080)
As we are wishing farewell to Gloria and Fr. Tony, and praying that they will "fare well" in the future, we are also welcoming someone new to parish. This weekend we welcome Father Roy Regaspi, our new parochial vicar. See the announcement about him on page 2 of this bulletin. I encourage you to warmly welcome Father Roy to our parish family today and in the days ahead.
Before closing, I want to invite you to take a look at the new website for our school (sjsusa.org). The Saint Joseph School website has been completely redesigned to better reflect the good things happening at our school. Also, if you have clicked on our parish website recently, be sure to take a look (sjcnj.org). I think you will be impressed!
In the last bulletin I asked whether readers preferred this font, or the one we had been using. This smaller font. The larger font won out! People told me they found this larger font easier and more inviting to read.
Love, Father Tom Iwanowski

Quotes from the General Instruction of the
Roman Missal
On November 27, 2011, the English speaking
Church in the USA will begin using a new
translation of the prayers used at Mass (The
Roman Missal). A series of quotes explaining
the parts of the Mass from the General
Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) will
be posted here. These explanations are meant
to help the reader participate more fully in
the Sunday Mass.
The Eucharistic Prayer
Now the center and summit of the entire celebration begins:
namely, the Eucharistic Prayer, that is, the prayer of
thanksgiving and sanctification. The priest invites the people to
lift up their hearts to the Lord in prayer and thanksgiving; he
unites the congregation with himself in the prayer that he
addresses in the name of the entire community to God the
Father through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, the
meaning of the Prayer is that the entire congregation of the
faithful should join itself with Christ in confessing the great
deeds of God and in the offering of Sacrifice. The Eucharistic
Prayer demands that all listen to it with reverence and in
silence. (GIRM, 78)
Communion
It is most desirable that the faithful, just as the priest himself is
bound to do, receive the Lord’s Body from hosts consecrated at
the same Mass and that, in the instances when it is permitted,
they partake of the chalice, so that even by means of the signs
Communion will stand out more clearly as a participation in the
sacrifice actually being celebrated. (GIRM, 85)

The Most Holy Trinity Sunday
Sunday Gospel
God so loved the world that he gave
his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but
might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to
condemn the world, but that the
world might be saved through him. - Jn 3:16-17

Newsletter of Respect Life Committee of St. Joseph Church, Oradell/ New Milford, NJ Melinda Rabbia ([email protected]) & Hank Keough, Editors Issue #75, May-June 2011
The “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion” Act On May 4th, the U.S. House passed HR3, a bill that would permanently ban funding of abortion in all federal government programs, by a vote of 251-175. HR3 would institute a permanent ban on funding of elective abortions by any program of the U.S. government.
HR3 is sponsored by Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ). Smith informed the House that a study by the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute noted that one-quarter of women who otherwise would have had abortions chose to give birth when taxpayer dollars were not available to pay for abortions of their children.
Current federal law on abortion funding is a patchwork. Many of the restrictions expire annually, making it necessary to re-fight the same battles year after year. The funding bans that do exist don’t even cover every federal program.
Now the bill goes to the Senate. Despite the uphill battle in the Senate, pro-life groups are also pushing hard for adoption of the legislation, which would ensure that Americans won’t be forced to subsidize abortion with tax dollars. According to Penny Nance of Concerned Women for America, “Now it’s time for Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) to bring this legislation up for a vote in the Senate. Please call your senators today and urge them to ask Senator Reid to take the next step towards ending government funding for abortion,” she said.
May God bless the men, who with their wives, have shared the gift of life with their children. Like Saint Joseph, may all fathers guide,
protect, and nurture their families and
help them to grow in love of God.
May fathers protect the lives entrusted
to their care!
Open Records Adoption Bill in NJ On Monday, May 9, the NJ Assembly passed the Open Adoption Records Bill (A1406), which pro-life advocates fear will discourage adoption. A1406 ignores the wish of some birth parents to keep their identities private. This could reduce the number of adoptions, and cause some birth parents to choose abortion. The bill had previously passed the State Senate (S799) and is now on the Governor's desk. Call Governor Christie at 609-292-6000 and urge him to veto S799/A1406, stating that these bills will discourage adoption. Pro-lifers supported A3672/S2586, an alternative bill to establish a confidential intermediary system for birth parents and adopted children who might want contact. You can also e-mail the governor by visiting http://www.state.nj.us/governor/contact/
