I first met Rachel Brown, MBBS, MPhil, during a lunch meeting when she made a second visit to KUSM-W to interview for the psychiatry chair role. I immediately knew she was someone who could have a positive impact on the Department of Psychiatry, on KUSM-W and the mental health community in Wichita. Dr. Brown struck me as engaging, experienced and approachable. During our conversation, she immediately started brainstorming ideas for growing several activities within the department. Her thoughtful ideas were welcome, on point and will surely enhance our department in positive ways. It is safe to say I was very excited to hear Dr. Brown accepted the position of chair and began on July 2! Dr. Brown comes to us from Central Michigan University College of Medicine where she served as the associate dean for student affairs, diversity and inclusion officer and professor of psychiatry. Prior to her time at CMU, Dr. Brown served for nearly 30 years in various faculty, administrative and clinical appointments in the United States and United Kingdom, including at the University of Missouri. While at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, Dr. Brown was presented the Excellence in Education Award by the Medical Student Advisory Council. That same year, she was elected to be the commencement keynote speaker by the 2017 graduating class. I believe this speaks volumes to Dr. Brown’s ability to connect with and shape medical students in positive ways. On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, we have enjoyed getting to know Dr. Brown and welcome her leadership to the department. “I’m ready!” This was the mantra I borrowed three years ago from the wise SpongeBob SquarePants as I prepared to start my first year of residency. From the beginning of my first rotation, I viewed each day as an opportunity to learn as much as I could. Going into my second year, I was honored to be selected as associate chief to represent my classmates in the program. As I continue into my final year here at KU as chief, I am often asked what it is that has helped me have a successful residency career. I share these sentiments with you today and direct them especially to the first-year class.

Keep an open mind. This has allowed me to try new things, forge unexpected relationships and gain the ability to view situations from a foreign perspective.

Be dependable. You, your peers, the faculty and support staff are a team. You will depend on them many times, and they will need the same accountability in return.

Be curious. Curiosity will allow you to learn from a variety of people and will help you become a lifelong learner.

Finally, do not forget to laugh. Residency will be challenging, and will test your limits. Keep the people who make you smile close. By caring for yourself, you will be better equipped to provide excellent care for your patients.

These are the tools which have led to my success, as well as my enjoyment, throughout my time at KU. I invite all the residents, faculty and staff to declare with the enthusiasm and wisdom of SpongeBob, “We’re ready!” as we welcome in the new residency year.
