Welcome Delta Pick Mello

Delta Pick Mello, who has served as Membership and Community Relations Di-rector for the California State Railroad Museum Foundation for the past eight years, has been named the new Executive Director of the California Automobile Museum. While Karen McClaflin was well loved and has left a major legacy on CAM, we are excited to see the new director initiate and enact her innovative ideas for the museum. Mello states, “I am fascinated with the history of the Sacramento area and how Sacramento contributes to the whole demographic of this state… With the au-tomobiles, it’s not just the history but a way of life, so reflective of our culture and how we live and do things in California.” We could not be more pleased and excited to have Delta here and hopefully you will get to meet her at the various events we have going on this year. 2016 has already started off to be a wonderful and exciting year.

Did you know that, for generations, automakers have used run-of-the-mill modeling clay to design their rolling mas-terpieces? Even now when it comes to designing high tech cars, the automobile industry still uses clay modeling to per-fect a car before its engineers will put it into production. This is where designers truly begin to fine tune an automobiles design!

Sign-up your child for the fun, hands-on Future Engineers Clay Modeling Class! Kids will learn about how cars were first designed using clay medium in the early days of the automobile industry and how they have continue to use design meth-od today. Then, the kids ages 7-13 will gain the extraordinary opportunity to create a model car out of clay and peak their interest in the engineering field, just the way the pros do it! Of course, you get to keep your model as a souvenir!Cost: $15 for Gearhead Members/$20 for general public (This includes registration for both child and guardian)

Youth Basic Engine ClassMarch 12 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm This is a hands-on 3 hour class aimed at students 4th grade and up. Students learn how an engine works by taking apart a Briggs and Strat-ton one cylinder engine to see how the solids, liquids and gases interact to make it run. Students also get to fire up several different types of engines to see how each gets their specific job done. The cost for this class is $20 per pair (guardian and student) for museum members, $25 per pair for non-members

ARTomotive Photography ClassMarch 26 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pmCameras and cars seem to go together, don’t they? Whether it’s aiding a sale, documenting restoration, or simply capturing the beautiful design of a vehicle; photography plays an important role in the automotive hobby.

In this workshop you will learn tips and techniques for enhancing your automotive photographs. This class is oriented toward dig-ital photography and will include demonstrations on how to use Adobe Photoshop to enhance your photography. And you’ll get a unique opportunity that rarely presents itself at a museum; you’ll be able to go behind the chains to get up close and personal pho-tographs of our exhibits!

The cost for this class is $35 per person for museum members and $45 for non-members. Lunch is included.

Dennis Furr, Docent Class of 2015CAM Docent, Road Crew, Pit CrewCareer: Retired Automotive Technician

Dennis Furr had an interesting place to play as a child. The playground in his backyard was a 1926 Ford Model T Depot Hack. As a teen he decided he wanted to make it run. By reading up on Model T’s, he was able to get it started.

Dennis worked as Q.C. Inspector in a seat belt manufacturing plant in Fresno. A co-worker was the wife of the Service Manager at the Cadillac dealership. She told him he should go tell her husband to give him a job. First the lube rack, then an apprentice program made him the GM 350 Diesel expert. Several car dealerships later he worked at Daugherty Downtown where the State Legislators brought their cars for service.

Dennis and his Father restored the Depot Hack that had mostly been sitting. It had been in his family since 1964. Doors were not originally fitted on the Model T. Dennis’ wife did not like looking down at the road disappearing below the wheels. Doors have since been added.

Dennis joined the Sac Valley Model T Club with the completed car. They held two events in 2014 at CAM, which intro-duced Dennis to the Museum. When he saw the article in the Bee announcing the start of Docent training, he signed up. Dennis really enjoyed the training. He learned a lot, and found the people fun and full of life. There is so much material to absorb, Dennis is sitting in on all the classes he can this year. This is to help him “remember what he forgot”.

Since becoming a docent, Dennis has given tours to people from 8 countries. Some of them got freaked out as they entered the yellow Model T for pictures. When you put weight on the running board the car rocks like a buggy. People expect a car to be stable. He now warns the unwary in advance.

The car Dennis wishes he still owned is Henry, a green 1970 Ford Mustang. On the underside of the hood was a red stamp with the name Henry. Possibly an inspector, or the great man himself?

Dennis loves to drive Model T’s, especially taking the Museums 1914 Touring car out for events. Dennis has a Model T safety tip to pass on: Finding neutral with the Hi/Lo pedal is easier if you plant your heel on the floor and bend your foot, as opposed to holding your entire leg in mid air. Dennis personally knows 6 people who have run into the washer/dryer or some other obstacle while searching for neutral with limited time to find it!

Beneath the Snow, a Model T on Skis Credit:The Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum, Bowdoin College

Scattered in a small clearing in the wilds of northeastern Canada, on the edge of the North Atlantic, a small automotive treasure has been recovered: a Ford Model T that had skis in place of its front wheels. Rescued from the boreal forest where it had been stuck since 1928, much of the time cov-ered in snow, “Labrador’s first snowmobile,” as it is locally known, is undergoing restoration with the goal of having it run on the snowy landscape again.

The 1927 roadster pickup, built in October 1926, is missing some key parts, but is otherwise not in bad condition. The vehicle was disassembled and scattered around a former sci-entific expedition site in Anaktalak Bay on the coast of Lab-rador, over 700 miles from St. John’s, now the provincial cap-ital, and far from any road connecting to the rest of North America.

The Ford was brought up to the Big Land, as this part of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador is known, in 1927 by Donald B. MacMillan, an American explorer, aboard the schooner Bowdoin. The car was used by Mr. MacMillan and his fellow scientist-adventurers on the frozen North Atlantic to gather firewood; to travel to towns in the region like Nain; and occasionally to give a lift to the Inuit and Innu people whom Mr. MacMillan wrote about in his journal:

“Great excitement upon our arrival in Nain,” he wrote on Dec. 30, 1927. “The whole village was out, including all the dogs. Since this was the first automobile which they had ever seen, naturally such would cause some excitement.”

The Model T was transformed into a snow machine through several modifications. The front wheels were removed and attached to the back, and a ski apparatus replaced the front wheels. A snow track was wrapped around the two pairs of rear wheels. Converting the car took some four hours, according to Bob McDonald, a Model T snowmobile enthusiast in Federal Way, Wash.

Mr. MacMillan’s journal is kept by the Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum and Arctic Studies Center at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Me. Susan Kaplan, the director of the museum and Arctic studies center, said, “He could go almost anywhere using that machine — and he did.”

Mr. MacMillan was interested in the newest technologies, she said, and brought cameras to document and study the use of the automobile and the cultures of the Inuit and Innu people in the area. Now, over 85 years later, the study is reversed, with Nunatsiavut, the name of the regional government for the Inuit people of Labrador, examining Mr. MacMillan, his Model T and its lasting impression on this northeastern region of Canada.

Labrador’s First “Snowmobile” Heads Down The Comeback Trail

Continued on P 8

The expedition area has been a protected archaeological site since 1995, when the provincial government recognized it as such during surveys of the land in preparation for development of a nickel mine.

Jamie Brake, an archaeologist with the Nunatsiavut government, tracked down the Model T in April 2011. “I hiked around a little bit on snowshoes,” he said in a telephone interview. “And then all of a sudden, poking out of the snow, you could see the chassis and a headlight and a big chunk of the body. I could see a foot pedal sticking out of the snow.”

He returned in October 2013, when more of the vehicle was visible, with local helpers. They laid a grid over the archaeo-logical site to document the vehicle’s remains.

The chassis and body had been flipped upside down, presumably by scavengers seeking parts. The two doors, which were rather beaten up, and two tracks lay on the ground on either side, as if they had fallen off. The engine and manifold lay near the front end, and parts of the carburetor were several meters way. The dual-wheel fenders that came with the snowmobile kit were still attached to the body.

It was local knowledge that the Ford was there, and pieces had been removed over the years until Nunatsiavut authorities decided to step in and retrieve the vehicle.

Some instruments from the dashboard are gone, as are the steering wheel, the wheels, the windshield, the radiator and one of the most important features: the skis, made of wood and metal in New Hampshire by the Snowmobile Company.

Most of the remaining pieces lay on a bed of caribou moss, with just a bit of overgrowth from berry bushes, covering a site of 12 square meters. A few parts were scattered farther away.

“It just looked so much better than I imagined,” Mr. Brake said, for a machine that had sat in the Labrador woods for nine decades.

Ms. Kaplan said the harsh winters had kept the vehicle in relatively good shape. “Because it is so cold, things are beautifully preserved,” she said.

After the grid was installed and the parts were recorded and tagged, Mr. Brake and others from Nain, some 25 miles away, took the smaller items back to the community by boat. The engine, transmission, chassis and body had to wait until March, when ice made it safer to move large objects without the risk of tipping a boat.

Shawn Solomon, who helped with the archaeological mapping and removal of the vehicle, said taking it out of the woods in the winter was a challenge.

“Especially where there were big banks and steep banks and deep snow right up to your waist,” said Mr. Solomon, whose ancestors would have been present when the vehicle made its first appearance in Nain.

For Mr. Brake, a moment to remember was when the body and chassis were moved onto a large sled called a komotik. “It was pretty amazing to see it on the sea ice for the first time in nearly a hundred years,” he said.

“We had to drive really slow coming back to Nain,” said Antone Harris, another resident who helped with the retrieval. The sled was towed — slowly, because of the rough ice conditions — behind a modern snow machine.

Continued on P 9

Word quickly spread across the continent. When Mr. McDonald, a member of the Model T Ford Snowmobile Club, heard about the recovery effort, he phoned Mr. Brake and offered his help.

“It just fascinates me,” said Mr. McDonald, highlighting the importance of this particular Model T because of its use on the MacMillan expedition and its historical importance to Labrador.

Mr. Brake called it a “history-changing piece of technology” for the remote region.

“Today, snowmobiling is a way of life,” he said. “That’s how you get around.” But before the snowmobile, all winter travel-ing other than walking was done by dog teams and sleds. Trips for fishing, hunting, shopping and visiting other communities are all now done on snowmobiles during the winter.

The Model T had been kept in a warehouse in Nain, but Mr. Brake does not want it to sit idly in storage. A restoration is underway, with the goal of hearing its engine putter again.

Most parts of the vehicle arrived on Dec. 2 by ferry and truck in Port au Choix on the island of Newfoundland, where a machinist will try to get the engine in working order. Mr. Brake hopes to interest the Nain community in becoming involved in the restoration; he thinks students at the local school can help to re-create the wooden bed that would have come with the snowmobile kit.

Mr. McDonald, who has owned five Model T snowmobiles, warns that repairing the historic vehicle could become costly because of the lack of local expertise and the need to have missing steel parts shipped in. He would like to see more enthu-siasts chip in to help revive the vehicle.

“Objects have stories behind them,” said Ms. Kaplan of Bowdoin’s Arctic Studies Center.

Mr. Brake estimates that the repairs will take a few years, and then he hopes to have Labrador’s first snowmobile driving around Nain, a sight that would surely inspire awe just as it did all those years ago.

He is considering adding a few gadgets under the hood, like a cooking apparatus that would attach to the manifold. Then, when students go on a field trip for a history lesson, they can cook their food on the way. Lunch would be ready by the time they reach that historic spot on Anaktalak Bay.
