Next: Freedom of Religion
Members of the Pentecostal Church of God in Kentucky pray for a girl in 1946
Many types of religion are practiced
Hinduism
Buddhism
Islam
Muslim pilgrimage in streets of Saudi Arabia
Muslims gather in holy city of Mecca for massive prayer
Judaism
Christianity
Free Exercise Clause
“Congress shall make no law prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”
This clause prohibits the government from unfairly interfering with the free practice of religion. This means that the government cannot deny anyone the right to practice their religion and must treat all religions equally!
EXAMPLE: If a Christian church is able to get government money for an after school program, all other religious groups must also be able to receive government money for their programs.
Establishment Clause
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.”
This clause prohibits the government from establishing a state supported religion
Example: President Obama cannot declare that Christianity is the religion of the United States
Separation of Church and State
• This phrase means that our government and our religious institutions are separate. Government does not influence religion, and religion does not influence government.
• Can you think of an example that contradicts (goes against) this idea?
