New Hope-Solebury High School requires twenty-eight(28.0) earned credits for graduation in the following areas:

Traditional 9th Grade ScheduleEnglish 1 credit

Exploring the Non Western World OR Global Extensions

1 credit

Math (Alg I, Alg II, Geometry) 1 credit

Biology 1.5 credits (with additional lab on alternating days)

PE .5 credit (alternating days opposite Biology lab unless student requires a support class for Math/Biology/English)

World Language 1 credit (recommended elective)

Health I .5 credit

Electives 1.5 credits8 credits maximum per year* Students may take a maximum of one full year study hall per year.

Lab Support & Keystone Prep Classes

• These .5 credit courses reinforce content for Math, Biology, or Literature as needed based on Standardized Testing, Prior Coursework Achievement, Teacher Recommendation

• Keystone exam scores arrive in the summer. Any Algebra 1 student who does not score Proficient or Advanced on the Algebra 1 Keystone may need to be scheduled for a Keystone Preparation course prior to a retest. This would result in a schedule change during the summer.

Learning Support 

Students with IEPs will work with their parents, learning support teacher, and classroom teachers to determine the

most appropriate courses for the following year.

A change in course requests or schedule that is guided by a student’s IEP or 504 plan is permitted by the Critical

Course Selection Change Procedures

Choosing the Best Fit Course LevelAcademic:

Academic courses are college-preparatory in nature.

Honors:Honors courses are best suited for motivated learners who are able to learn at an accelerated pace. Honors courses are weighted.

Current Honors students must maintain a minimum final grade of 83 and receive teacher recommendation to continue in the Honors sequence. To advance into Honors, students must attain a minimum of 92 in an Academic class and receive teacher recommendation.

 

Course Selection Procedure & TimelineStarting Now:• 8th graders review online Course Selection Guide with parents.

February 12: • 8th grade assembly to explain course selection

February 12-February 26:Teachers’ recommendations will be visible when they log on to the portal to complete online course requests. Please contact current teachers regarding any questions about level placement.

 February 26-March 2: •School counselors hold individual meetings with 8th graders to discuss and verify course requests. If any discrepancies still exist with level placement, the recommending teacher & counselor will communicate with parents.

Course Selection Procedure & Timeline

March 14:• Course Request Verification forms mailed home.

Verification forms are not a final schedule. March 23: Deadline for any changes in course requests.

• After March 23, only changes that fit under the Critical Course Change Procedures will be accepted:

–Failure to meet the required prerequisite–A level change that has been recommended by the teacher–A change as guided by the student’s IEP or 504 plan–A request to add a class in place of a study hall

Friendly Reminders •Requests should consist of:

–7.0-8.0 credits of primary choices (including both core and elective courses)

AND–3 alternate elective courses in case your primary elective requests aren’t available

• A one credit elective is equivalent to two half credit electives. •Students may take a maximum of one full year study hall each year.
