We kindly ask that as you enter the Sanctuary you turn off your cell phone.

Reconciliation Statement: Asbury First United Methodist Church prayerfully strives to live in its community with open hearts, open minds and open doors. Affirming that each person is of sacred worth, we seek to be a fully inclusive church, believing that all people are God’s children, created in God’s image, loved and blessed equally by God. It is our purpose to be a Reconciling Congregation. This means extending hospitality and encouraging full participation of all, regardless of age, race, national origin, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, marital status or family structure, education or economic background, and physical or mental ability. We recognize that we hold a variety of opinions. We do not seek to erase our differences, but to journey together in faith toward greater understanding and mutual respect. We believe that reconciliation to God and to one

another is central to our mission and ministry.2

Our Mission StatementLove God and neighbor.

Live fully. Serve all. Repeat.

Sound Bite Love. Live. Serve. Repeat.

Prayer of ConfessionRead By Ian

Newcomb

Oh God, we stand in awe of your wondrous love;Forgive us for giving into temptation. When called to do good unto others, we too often think mostly of ourselves;Forgive us for perpetuating systemic injustices. And when we fail to share love with our friends, our families, and ourselves,Forgive us for our personal transgressions.

Silent Confession All are invited to offer their personal prayers of silent confession.

Words of Assurance Friends, be comforted by these words from Rumi:I am so small I can barely be seen. How can this great love be inside me?Look at your eyes. They are small, but they see enormous things.Though we might feel small, God sees the greatness in us. By God’s great and wondrous love, we are forgiven.

*GloriaTune: Hymn #102

All glory be to God, all praise and thanks be given; Whose Son and Spirit reign as one in highest Heaven; Our one eternal God, whom earth and heaven adore; For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.

Luke 6:31–35bRead by Carly

Guidice

Do to others as you would have them do to you. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. If you lent to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High.

All children are invited forward at this time and may bring their prayer requests and offerings.

Lord's Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

*Hymn #519 “Lift Every Voice and Sing” (v. 3)

During the singing of this hymn, children four years old through fifth grade are invited to exit the sanctuary for Enrichment Time.

Pastoral PrayerRead by McKenzie Flynn, Written by

Liz Roote

O God,Sometimes when the birds stop chirpingAnd the snow stops fallingAnd the flowers stop blooming,The world feels colder and more sorrowfulThan the cast expanse of space. How can we claim to be the inherently goodWhen the evils of this worldSeep into the grass like diseaseAnd seem to infect all that they touch? But we remember thatAlthough tragedy takes holdAlthough violence still plagues usAlthough suffering is the universal language of This EarthThe birds will always chirp againThe first snow of the winter season will always reappearThe flowers will always bloom once moreAnd the sun will always continue to rise. The light inside of usWill shine into the hearts of others through Your Love, God.It is hard to hold onto happiness and warmth in times like these. But it is always possible, In quick moments - birds chirping, snow falling, sun rising - To find light. In the name of Christ we pray. Amen.

Offertory “What Wondrous Love Is This”—Appalachian Folk Hymn, arr. Trevor ManorWhat wondrous love is this, O my soul! What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss to bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul, to bear the dreadful curse for my soul? When I was sinking down beneath God’s righteous frown, Christ laid aside his crown for my soul.To God and to the Lamb I will sing; Who is the great “I AM”, while millions join the theme, I will sing!

The Next Step: THANK YOU!During the month of May, we launched an initiative to raise funds for the Outreach Terrace project of our planned newly renovated Outreach Center. The purpose of this initiative was to create new and meaningful ways for people to commit to the Better Together campaign for the first time. And what a success it has been! As of the end of May, we have received commitments from 9 individuals/families who are first-time

donors to the Better Together Campaign. While unexpected, we had a number of people give to this project who have already made a Better Together Campaign pledge. To all who made a commitment, thank you for joining our legacy of generosity here at Asbury First. Your gift is helping further our vision to Do More Good through our Outreach. At the end of May, we received $22,350 from 27 individuals/families. The opportunity to give to this initiative will continue, and our prayer is that it will continue to bring in new donors to the Better Together campaign.

DISCIPLESHIPJoin Us at the Churchwide Carnival & Talent Show TODAY!Our annual churchwide carnival is this morning following the 10 am worship service. Come one, come all to a fun event on the Granger lawn. We will have a picnic lunch, inflatables, pie eating contest, a talent show, and much more. This event is a great way to celebrate the beginning of Summer together!

Spiritual Life Ministry Spiritual ReflectionThe Spiritual Life Ministry offers you a weekly Summer Spiritual Reflection encouraging you to Rest, Relax, Renew, and Repeat. This week's spiritual theme is “Bienvenue a la maison,” Welcome Home! What wonderful words in any language. Today we welcome home our Asbury First travelers as they return from a week in Taize, France. In this highly spiritual setting they participated in a unique personal experience of daily prayer, periods of work, community worship and quiet self-reflection. Even though they are home their summer journey, like ours, continues with God’s grace. Whatever your summer plans… step back from the daily rush of life’s activities and pause. REFLECTION: “Be still my soul… your best, your heavenly friend…leads to a joyful end.” 9

Volunteer at The Library! The Library committee at Asbury First church is seeking individuals to guide and tend our library collection. We meet once a month (the second Tuesday) in the evening (approximately 7–9 pm) and hold an optional work day in the library every Monday. It is our responsibility to provide our collection in a useful, helpful manner for our congregation. We could use some assistance in selecting books for purchase, organizing our library, and assisting church members with borrowing books from the collection. If you are interested in reading, books, or volunteering, please contact Bonnie Kay at [email protected], Beth Woolever at [email protected], or the church office at [email protected], or fill out a “Help Wanted” form, located on the desk in the library.

CONGREGATIONAL CARE Changing Weighs News! The Asbury First weight loss group, Changing Weighs, is headed in a new direction! Join us as we embark on The Daniel Plan, a focus on Faith, Food, Fitness, Focus, and Friends. Join us Wednesdays at 6 pm in the Library. Have questions? Email us at [email protected].

Have a Care Request? Let Us Know! Bidden or unbidden, God is present. Here at Asbury First, we feel and know this to be true, and we rejoice in this good news! We work to share the presence of God with others, during the good times and during the bad times. Often, during the challenging times in our lives, we need a little help. Our caring ministries are here to support you as we are able to meet your needs. Do you—or someone you know—need some extra care and attention due to illness, bereavement, injury, or another pressing need? We want to be there for you and with you! Care

Request forms are available at the Welcome

Desk in the Welcoming Hall; please take one if there is a need that we can help address. For more information, please contact The Rev. Kathy Thiel at [email protected] or (585) 271-1050 x106.

Caring for One AnotherAt Asbury First, we are a tightly-knit family and strive to care for one another every day—not just on Sundays. That’s why we are inviting you to reach out to individuals in our community whom you may not have seen around the campus recently. Perhaps there has been an especially busy or difficult time for someone in our church community and they could use words of encouragement, a meal, or prayers. We ask that you take a moment each week to reflect on the faces you have seen and those you may not have seen recently—and reach out to them, or let someone with the Asbury First staff know, and we can reach out for you! For details, please contact The Rev. Kathy Thiel at [email protected] or (585) 271-1050 x106.

The Grocery Bag Ministry Needs Your HelpHunger affects 1 in 6 of your fellow Americans. Think about that and then remember that through your GBM, in service for over 9 years, YOU have been supplying and serving more than 1,000 bags of nutritious groceries each year to individuals and families in need of food with the help of Asbury's outreach network of inner City partner churches. The true front lines of hunger in our community are just a few short miles from Asbury First! Our supplies and budgets are always challenged and stretched, even more so as in the last year your GBM has been also providing groceries to 30 refugee families joining our community! We need your help with donations of foods like jams, peanut butter, pasta sauce and pasta, canned fruits and vegetables, soups and tuna fish. Next time you go to the store for yourself and your family, think about the generous tradition of Asbury First, and please consider buying just one extra item from the above needs list and say to yourself, " I will donate this to the GBM box on my next visit to church"! Any items you wish to donate may be conveniently dropped off in the wood Outreach Box near the coat racks in the Welcome Hall. The volunteers of your Asbury Grocery Bag Ministry thank each and everyone who, over these past 9 years, have made and continue to make these incredibly helpful donations in order to ease hunger for your fellow citizen and refugee recipients. Together we can make a real difference and help this essential outreach ministry continue. Thank you all! For more information, please contact Joe Cygan at (585) 671-5982.

Calling for All of Your Extra BiblesWe have continuing need for bibles of any type—English or Spanish—for our Dining and Caring Center, Storehouse, and several women’s support groups. Please drop them off at the church office. Thank you!

Gently Used Backpacks NeededWe are in need of backpacks for our Dining and Caring Center guests. Bags can be any type—backpack, rucksack, etc. Donations may be left at the church office or the Dining Center during business hours.

Blood Drive on June 16Blood donors and those wishing to donate for the first time should mark their calendars for Saturday, June 16. We will have a drive in the Gathering Center from 8:30 am to 1 pm that day. There will be a sign-up table in the Welcoming Hall on Sundays, June 3 and 10. If willing and qualified, please join us to respond to an important community need. For more information, please visit RedCrossBlood.org or contact Ed Ristau at [email protected].
