THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUST HAVE FAITH Jairus’ daughter is the child of an important, priv-ileged man, who publicly seeks out Jesus and loudly pro-claims—and demonstrates—his faith, “falling at Jesus’ feet and pleading earnestly with him” (5:22–23). The anonymous woman virtually “sneaks up behind” Jesus and, though clearly filled with faith, keeps that faith to herself until Jesus draws “the whole truth” out of her af-ter her cure (5:27–28, 33). All the more impressive, then, that Jesus delays his healing of the seemingly “more im-portant” and younger woman for the unknown, truly mar-ginalized older woman. Returning to the “domestic church,” so to speak, of Jairus’ house from the public setting of the older woman’s cure, Mark tells us that Jairus’ daughter has died. In the face of a hopelessness even more definitive than that of the hemorrhaging wom-an, people tell Jairus “why trouble the teacher any long-er?” (5:35). But Jesus does not consider his response to Jairus’ faith hopeless or a bother: “Do not be afraid; just have faith” (5:36). Despite death’s apparent triumph at Jairus’ home, Jesus grasps the child’s hand—even though the law prohibited touching the dead—and bids her, “Talitha koum—Little girl, I say to you, arise!” (5:41). WHY BOTHER? So Mark seems to be asking us: Like Jairus on his way home or like the woman after twelve years, will we wonder, why bother? Or keep walking in faith with Jesus? Is a silent touch of Jesus’ garment—a quiet prayer of faith—enough for us? In the face of apparent hopeless-ness, will we choose faith over despair despite the ridi-cule of the crowd, remembering that Jesus has grasped us by the hand in baptism and commanded us to rise? Note the Gospel’s ending: after bidding Jairus’ daughter rise, Jesus commands that she be given something to eat (5:43). SÓLO TEN FE Jairo tiene una hija, él es un hombre importante y privilegiado quien busca públicamente a Jesús, procla-ma intensamente y demuestra su fe “cayendo a los pies de Jesús y suplicándole de todo corazón” (5:22-23). La mujer anónima prácticamente “se acerca a hurtadillas” a Jesús y, aunque evidentemente tiene fe, se guarda esa fe hasta que Jesús le saca “toda la verdad” después de que ella es curada (5:27-28, 33). Así pues, resulta aún más impresionante que Jesús retrase la curación de quien parece ser la mujer joven y “más importante” por la desconocida y sinceramente, por la mujer mayor y marginada. Volviendo a la “iglesia doméstica”, por así decirlo, siendo la casa de Jairo el lugar público donde ocurrió la curación de la mujer mayor, Marcos nos dice que la hija de Jairo murió. Ante esta desesperanza aún más definitiva que la de la mujer hemorroisa, la gente le dice a Jairo “¿para qué molestas más al maes-tro?” (5:35). Ante la apa-rente desesperanza, ¿elegiremos la fe en lugar de la de-sesperación a pesar de las burlas de la multitud, recor-dando que Jesús nos ha tomado de la mano en el bautis-mo y nos ha ordenado que nos levantemos? Pon aten-ción en el final del Evangelio, después de ordenar a la hija de Jairo que se levante, Jesús les ordena que le den de comer (5:43), Así también, Jesús nos invita ahora a festejar en su banquete y sacrificio eucarístico. FIESTA DE LA FE Pan El pan es un alimento ordinario, es propio de ricos y pobres. Hay que trabajar para conseguirlo. Así como es de real, tiene mucho de simbólico. Papá y mamá se ale-gran en poder llevar a casa el pan de los hijos, para com-partirlo con todos, indistintamente de su grado de bon-dad. Para los judíos del Mediterráneo, el pan, mezclado con aceite era el elemento más común de su alimenta-ción. El pan de trigo lo comían los ricos, mientras que los pobres comían el pan de cebada. Aún así, el pan es sa-broso y lleva en él la providencia divina que cuida de no-sotros. Se recibe, incluso, de manos de los pobres, quie-nes comparten su propio pan porque saben lo que es carecer de él. Al compartirlo, cumplimos el mandato de Jesús: “tomen y coman”. Por eso es que nuestro pan se ha de poner en la mesa, para ser compartido, sólo así tiene sentido. Alimentados todos del mismo pan, en la misma mesa, esperando la misma promesa. FEAST OF FAITH Preparation of the Gifts The altar is prepared, the gifts are received. Several brief rites follow with accompanying prayers, some prayed silently by the priest and deacon and others said aloud. We call this part of the Mass the “preparation.” What kind of preparation is happening? First, the presid-er holds up the paten or bowl containing the hosts, and says words that Jesus must have said many times, since they derive from ancient Jewish meal prayers: “Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation!” We have brought for-ward our gifts, our offering to God, and now we acknowledge that they are not really ours—the gifts that we give are God’s gift to us. It is “through your good-ness” that we have gifts to offer. It is significant that we offer not wheat and grapes, but bread and wine; “fruit of the earth and work of human hands.” Bread and wine are both God’s work, and ours. These preparatory rites also prepare us for what we are about to do in the Eu-charist, a mystery in which divine and human meet; a holy collaboration in which our action is caught up into God’s divine plan. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. THE CMG SAFE HAVEN ONLINE TRAINING The training consists of 3 vignette style training videos that is approximately 60 minutes and will include a crimi-nal background check that must be completed. These trainings are available in English and Spanish. We will no longer offer live trainings (formally known as Virtus Train-ing); all Safe Environment trainings will only be available online.

All new employees and volunteers will complete the Safe Haven online training program. The turn-around time for approval may be approximately two weeks or less. All individuals must complete the training and complete a background check prior to the start of employment and/or volunteer service.

The 5-year anniversary date is still in place. As the 5-year anniversary date is met, individuals will need to log into CMGConnect with their user id and the password. Once the individual logs into their CMGConnect account. If you do not remember the user id, you may contact the office, 281-399-9008.

La capacitación consta de 3 videos de estilo viñeta que duran aproximadamente 60 minutos e incluirá una verifi-cación de antecedentes penales que debe completarse. Estas capacitaciones están disponibles en inglés y espa-ñol. Ya no ofreceremos capacitaciones en vivo (formalmente conocido como Virtus), todas las capacita-ciones de Safe Environment solo estarán disponibles en línea. Todos los nuevos empleados y voluntarios completarán el programa de capacitación en línea de Safe Haven. El tiempo de respuesta para la aprobación puede ser de aproximadamente dos semanas o menos.
