As we start the 4-H year, make it your goal to “Make the Best Better” in EVERYTHING you
do. 4-H is a wonderful opportunity to make and build friendships, help others and our
community, learn new things, learn about yourself, begin to be a healthy you and…grow.
Expand your 4-H horizons...try new things and S-T-R-E-T-C-H outside your comfort zone as
often as possible. HAVE AN AWESOME YEAR!
The LSU/SU AgCenter collaborated with
the East Carroll Parish Library for a day of
learning and fun. East Carroll Parish 3rd
graders were invited to the AgCenter and
library for educational sessions. This event
was developed in response to an ever
increasing need to help students gain a
greater awareness of the roles of
agriculture. This year’s focus was bees and
pollination.
4-H Awards Day was held at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science on Saturday, May 6.
The Museum of Natural Science is located in Jackson, Mississippi, tucked within historic
LeFleur’s Bluff State Park. The museum’s vast expanses of glass overlooks a 300-acre natural
landscape and 73,000 square feet of permanent and temporary exhibits which include deer,
waterfowl, fossils and
Mississippi’s endangered
spec i e s . An award s
ceremony was held in
recognition of 4-H’ers

Camping is one of the most valuable experiences a child
can have. It’s a learning experience that can help children
appreciate the outdoors, live together as a group, get along
with others and appreciate people with different interests
and backgrounds.
4-H Summer Camp for East Carroll Parish was held from
May 29-June 3, and 30 campers, 6 camp counselors and
1 4-H agent attended.
L.O.S.T. Camp was held from July 30-August 2. 4-H’ers
learned about outdoor skills and science. Those attending
from East Carroll were Draylin Clark, Kelvin Lane, Jr.,
Ray’Miyah Martin, Charlidra Porter, Ta’Kayia Powell and
Simiya Whitty.
This past summer, 11 East Carroll Parish 4-H’ers took
part in 4-H U held at Louisiana State University.
Congratulations to the 4-H U delegates: Ja’Kyrion
Atkins, Westley Bowman, Glenn Dixon II, La’Gariona
Jackson, Ray’Miyah Martin, Kristin Moore, Jr., Monyatta
Morris, KarVan Powell, Jr., Aaliyah Scott, Simiya Whitty
and Ty’JayJuan Wilson.
It is a disease caused by an
uncontrolled division of abnormal
cells in a part of the body. Most
cance r s a r e t r e a t ed by
chemotherapy or radiation.
Though there are several types of
cancers, they affect everyone the
same. Illness, side effects and hardships are all the same.
Cancer is extremely hard to cope with and is extremely
expensive to treat.
September: Leukemia Cancer
September is a special month that highlights the cancer
Leukemia. Leukemia is a disease where the bone marrow
and other blood-forming organs produce increased numbers
of immature or abnormal leukocytes. These suppress the
production of normal blood cells, leading to anemia and
other symptoms.
The 4-H junior leader
experience is designed to
provide members with the
opportunity to learn about
t h e q u a l i t i e s a n d
competencies needed to be a
leader. Junior leaders
provide assistance with 4-H
events and assume more
challenging leadership roles. Our Junior Leader program
is a great place to experience new things, complete
service learning projects, meet new friends, travel and
learn the leadership skills necessary in the world. Please
join us for our first meeting on September 6 from
3:30—5:30 p.m. at the 4-H office.

What’s a good theme for 4-H Summer
Camp and L.O.S.T. Camp? Send in your
most creative ideas for a slogan — in 7
words or less. To enable the campers once
again to have more choice in the design of
their T-shirts, illustrations must accompany
the phrase and will be part of the contest.
The contest is open to all 4-H club
members. The winning slogan will be one
that is brief and “catchy,” capturing the
spirit of 4-H Camp Grant Walker. The
slogan will be on all publicity for camp and
on the camp T-shirt and the winner will receive a monetary
award. Think fast—the deadline is Friday, October 27,
2017! Submissions must also include the following: 1) full
name and age of person submitting the slogan;
2) parish/4-H club; 3) complete mailing address; and
4) telephone number.

The 4-H Day of Service will be
held on December 3. This year’s
service project will be conducting
toy drives for local entities that
treat children with cancer. We
encourage everyone to participate
in the 4-H Day of Service. To
prevent the spread of infections and illnesses, all toys
should be new and able to be easily cleaned. Plastic toys,
books and markers are best.
