Quizzes back from before spring break

Track your results on your quiz sheet, answer these questions on the back –

Pull out your tracker from the ACP and compare it to the new tracker

1. Did your mastery increase on the latest TEKS?

2. Did mastery go down on any TEKS by more than 20%?

3. What TEKS/main topics do YOU need to focus on in tutoring (anything below 80%)

Page 5: Welcome back from Spring break! Attack the TAKS. Agenda Attack the TAKS (8 min) Track Quizzes (7 min) Natural Selection Review (15 min) Natural Selection.

Use your data

If you have low TEKS, come to tutoring for extra help on these

YOU now know what you know, know what you don’t know. Use that to know what to study.

“A man who knows what he knows

knows what he doesn’t know, then knows what to study.”

What is EVOLUTION?

Evolution is: A gradual change in organisms over a long period of time.

Page 8: Welcome back from Spring break! Attack the TAKS. Agenda Attack the TAKS (8 min) Track Quizzes (7 min) Natural Selection Review (15 min) Natural Selection.

What is NATURAL SELECTION?

The mechanism of evolution

The process of organisms having traits that enable them to better survive in an environment.

Page 9: Welcome back from Spring break! Attack the TAKS. Agenda Attack the TAKS (8 min) Track Quizzes (7 min) Natural Selection Review (15 min) Natural Selection.

Example of Natural Selection

In this example of natural selection, a bird will most likely see and eat the light colored moths in the dark environment and eat the dark colored moths in the light environment. The surviving moths will live to pass their trait on to their offsprings.

Phylogenetic Tree

A phylogenetic tree shows the relationship of organisms in a diagram format. Animals that are closely related are near each other on the diagram.

Exit Ticket1. Scientists call the gradual change in organisms over a long period of time

____________

2. The ability of organisms with stronger, more fit traits to survive and reproduce while weaker, unsuited organisms die is called _______.

3. A man had a termite problem in his home. The exterminator treated the termites with a chemical, killing 90% of them. The problem returned months later, and this time the chemical only killed 50% of termites. What best explains the reason for this?

A. The chemical is only effective against mature termites

B. The termites taught one another how to fight the chemical

C. The termite digestive system changed to metabolize the chemical

D. The surviving termites had a natural resistance that was inherited by offspring

4. The phylogenetic tree to the right shows evidence of: A. A common ancestor B. Natural Selection

C. Adaptation D. Learned traits

5. Looking at the phylogenetic tree to the right, which

organism is most closely related to V?

Your turn! In partner pairs, you will get a

scavenger hunt for the periodic table

You and your partner will have a periodic table, use this to find the elements in the scavenger hunt

Each person should fill answers on their own paper
