The Class of 2018 Mass and Graduation ceremony will be held next Friday evening, 19 th October. Soundscape 2018 Soundscape Festival 2018 went off with a bang on the final day of Term 3. Three stages around the College gave students the opportunity to listen to solos, bands, instrumental groups and DJ’s - something for everyone. Workshops were held in the morning for DJ groups, learning to mix tracks and beats before taking to the main stage for the final set. Our guest artist was unable to attend, however the workshop group brought their talents together and wrote a piece of music a challenging task which they rose to very well. DJ EMAS finished the Festival with an outstanding DJ set, with all students up on their feet to dance the final hour of the term away. It was a great way to finish a huge term for Performing Arts. Guest Author – Ms Deb Fitzpatrick On Wednesday, 10th October the College hosted Western Australian author, Ms Deb Fitzpatrick, who came to speak to our Year 7 & 8 students regarding the value of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking, to succeed at school and the wider world. Ms Fitzpatrick was an engaging speaker who uses her own experiences as a springboard for the success in her writing. She also presented several awards to students who contribute to the success in their learning by participating in library activities, reading and representing the College in interschool activities. These students were Year 7 students Shub Singh and Abby Watson, and Year 8 students Owen Bryant and Georgia Murray

Interhouse Chess Tournament In the Final week of Term 3 the College Library held the Grand Final of the Interhouse Chess Tournament between Sam Scott, Year 12 and Abby Watson, Year 7. The final took three sessions and two matches for the tournament to be concluded. It was an intense first match with Abby forcing a stalemate. Sam Scott was the eventual winner having won the second match. Congratulations to all the participants involved in the Interhouse Chess Tournament over the year. Mr Edward Bryant Head of Library

Seven Parent Tips for Students Managing Exam Stress School exams can be a very stressful time for teenagers,

particularly Year 12 exams. Some teenagers get stressed

about every exam, and others just one or two. The 2015 Mission Australia survey suggests that school and study are the top concerns teenagers aged 15-19. Stress around exam time can not only impact a teenager's mental health but also their physical health and general wellbeing. Having a stressed teenager in the house can also be difficult for the whole family. Helping your teenager manage their stress in the lead-up to exams can help them to study and also reduce the tension at home during the exam period. What to do if your teenager isn't coping If your teenager really isn't coping with his or her study load, it may be time to seek support from professionals. A school psychologist or counsellor can help teach exam stress management strategies. Students can also speak with Assistant Deputy Principals and teachers about support available at school. It is also important to talk about different types of achievement. Getting the right ATAR is not the only way students can achieve their goals. The College Career Counsellor can help students find alternate pathways to University or TAFE.

New Federal Government Funding Packaging for Non-Government Schools The Federal Government last month released its new funding arrangements for non-government schools, after weeks of discussions with representatives of the national Catholic education sector. The new package of measures will significantly improve the funding situation for our Catholic Education system. It will provide certainty that our schools and colleges will continue to thrive and be a viable, accessible and affordable education option for Western Australian families. The new funding arrangements will also provide certainty for our valued and committed staff who deliver the high standard of education experienced in our school. We are committed to supporting all families of varying financial means and the new funding package provides a much firmer foundation for this. The new funding arrangements announced are complex but can be summarised in three parts: 1. Interim funding arrangements for 2018 have been extended to 2019. The Federal Government

will provide an additional $135.1 million Australia-wide to continue 2018 funding into 2019. 2. A new measure of parents’ capacity to contribute will be introduced in 2020, based on personal

income tax (PIT) data rather than area-based Socio-Economic Status data. It is estimated that this will improve funding to Catholic schools Australia-wide at an average of 3.9% per student per annum between 2020 and 2029.

3. The introduction of a new fund worth $718m Australia-wide over 10 years to address the adverse effect of the Capacity to Contribute discount curve on Catholic schools.

We will keep you informed as the new funding arrangements are progressed by Catholic Education Western Australia.

St Andrew’s Parish News

An Invitation in the ‘Year of the Youth’ St Andrew’s Parish is running an On The Mass program, which will potentially break open your understanding of our Faith. The program is designed for youth, but is a faith formation program for students in high school all the way up to the elderly. It is a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in exploring and potentially growing their faith. The Film Series explores:

• Do you find Mass boring?

• Why do we stand, sit, kneel?

• What’s all the different language used?

• What does it all mean? The five-week free program runs every Tuesday at 7pm, beginning Tuesday, 16th October at St Andrew’s Catholic Church, Clarkson. Parents are invited to attend with their high school children. Optional $20 Student Workbook. Attend the first week to see whether this is for you. Bring a friend. Seven News Young Achiever Awards Nominations are now open for the Seven News Young Achiever Awards, including the Catholic

Education Western Australia Young Leadership Award category.

The Young Achiever Awards aim to acknowledge and promote the positive achievements of all young

people throughout Western Australia. For 2018/2019 there are nine categories, including CEWA's

Young Leadership Award, which recognises young people who exemplify courage, the power of a

positive attitude, and demonstrate an ability to collaborate and empower others.

Anyone 29 years old or younger can nominate or be nominated, so this is an opportunity for CEWA

students, alumni and staff alike to be recognised for outstanding achievement.

Each year since the launch of the program in 2016, CEWA's Young Leadership Award has

consistently been a highly competitive category, with some amazing young people as nominees,

finalists and winners. We hope to see even more nominees in this category this year, and also to see

members of our Catholic Education community from across the State well represented in other

categories too.

For more information, or to nominate yourself or a young achiever you know, follow the links above,

or email [email protected].
