Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday Mass On Sunday, 7th July, St Andrew’s Parish Church celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday. This significant celebration on our Church’s calendar, provided the opportunity to acknowledge our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander brothers and sisters, and signified that we are all united as one in God’s love and care. The Mass celebrated the strong connection between culture and land, and included dance processions and Aboriginal sand painting. Many of our students not only attended Mass, but participated in the proceedings. Year 11 student, Tarzara Kelly and Year 7 Student, Darcy Aaskov, who both spoke wonderfully and represented the College with reverence. Photography Excursions During Week 10 of last term, the Year 9 and 10 Photography classes travelled to two locations around Perth to take a series of landscape photographs. Mrs Schneider’s class had perfect sunny weather for their day on Wednesday, 3rd July. Sadly, Ms George’s class had their excursion cancelled on the Thursday, due to severe wet weather. Luckily on Friday, 5th July, the rain was on and off, allowing Mrs Richardson’s class to attend their excursion.

Both Mrs Schneider’s and Mrs Richardson’s classes visited Perry’s Paddock and Kings Park. Mrs Schneider’s class focused on taking a series of photos that deconstructed the landscape. They looked at using macro shots, and a combination of low and high camera angles to capture aspects of each location. Students will use their shots to create a landscape photo with a special twist. Mrs Richardson’s Year 10 students utilised tripods and the DSLR cameras to take 360 degree panoramas of each location. They had to ensure they had balanced compositions and had interesting scale in their shots. Students will learn how to stitch their photos together in Lightroom, before using them to create ‘Little Planets’. A selection of the Year 9 Deconstructed Landscapes and Year 10 Little Planets, will on display as part of the Creations Exhibition in Week 9, Term 3. Mrs Amy Richardson Head of Visual Arts

These two teams secured their place in the final ten, surpassing more than 110 teams across the Perth metropolitan area. They will be representing the College at the Just Start IT Gala Finals at Penrhos College on 5th August. These students are to be congratulated on their wonderful achievement. 2019 Irene McCormack Catholic College Winter Appeal This time of year presents many challenges to many families who are struggling to make ends meet. Keeping a family warm and fed during these colder months can be difficult when there are other demands on the family finances. This is often when families are forced to turn to wonderfully supportive Catholic agencies like ‘The ShopFront’ who will provide them with much needed assistance. Due to the success of our 2018 Winter Appeal we are again ‘targeting’ our donations to the needs of the clients who present at The ShopFront. For that reason, each House Group in each Year level has been allocated a particular ‘food and toiletry product’. These collections will take place over two weeks in Term 3. During those weeks, the students are asked to take their donations to Care where there will be a collection basket and these will be taken to a central collection point each day. Please see the posters included in this week’s McCormack Messenger for details of your child’s specified donation items. Week 2: Food donations Week 3: Toiletry donations Thank you in advance for supporting this important College initiative as we continue to show our generosity to the wider Perth community. Miss Cherie Milne Irene’s Service Learning Coordinator

Senior Girls Soccer The Senior Girls Soccer team progressed into the ACC Champion Schools play-offs and faced Sacred Heart College on Wednesday, 24th July. The team played a tight game, with the score being 0-0 for majority of the game. In the dying minutes the girls conceded a goal from a corner, halting their progress to the next round. I would like to acknowledge our senior students - Sophia Neal, Aluel Nul, Hattie Robinson and Charlotte Thomson, who have made a consistent contribution to the College in representing the College Soccer team over a number of years.

Interhouse Athletics Carnival – Thursday, 8th August

We look forward to another great day at our upcoming Interhouse Athletics Carnival. Key information is as follows: When and where is the Carnival? The carnival is on Thursday, 8th August and will be held at the College. The first rotation of events is due to start at 9.15am and will conclude by 3.05pm. Is this a compulsory school day? Yes. What does my child need to wear and what should they bring? Students should attend school at the normal time wearing their College sport uniform with HOUSE SHIRT. Footwear suitable for running and jumping must be worn. No canvas shoes. Spikes may be worn for events, but must be changed into for events and not worn all day. Please bring enough food and drink for the day, as the canteen will not be open.

What is the format of the carnival? The Carnival is conducted under a tabloid format with students involved in 30-minute rotations throughout the day, which will ensure participation in all events. It is expected that students give their best effort in all events. What events will be covered? Events will include the 100m, 200m, 400m and hurdles, whilst field events on the day will be shot put, long jump and high jump. Novelty events will also form part of the rotation, and students will compete for their Houses in tug-of-war and sack relay events. Are there any events conducted in the lead up to the Carnival? Yes, but it is not possible to include every event on Carnival day. The following events will be held in the days preceding the carnival on the oval: Thursday, 1st August 7.30am 1500m Tuesday, 6th August 7.30am 800m Wednesday, 7th August 7.30am Javelin/Discus How are Age Champions decided? Students gaining the highest number of individual points is the winner. Points are awarded from first to fifth place in each event. For this reason, it is imperative that students who aspire to be in contention, endeavour to compete in as many events as possible. This includes the events conducted outside of Carnival day. Where can I access a program of events? A copy will be included in next week’s newsletter. Alternatively, please email [email protected] to request a copy. Mr Ben Dyer Head of Sport

Fun Fitness Friday Students and staff were straight back into the Fun Fitness Friday sessions this morning, enjoying aerobic exercises and strength training, pairing up to work as a team. One of the many benefits of exercise is that it can make you feel happier, increasing the production of endorphins, which are known to help produce positive feelings. Come along and join in the fun next week - Friday 6.45am. We’ll be heading outdoors enjoying some team-related workouts, followed by breakfast in the gym foyer. Miss Shawn Billam & Mr Kieran Parkes Fun Fitness Friday Coordinators

CEWA Cyber Safety Issues This week we received the letter below from Debra Sayce, Executive Director CEWA, about the CEWA system cyber security issues. Our College has not been affected by the recent security breaches. “Dear Parents and Caregivers I am writing to advise that Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) has recently been the subject of false email representations designed to obtain personal information.

Our IT security team has systems and measures in place to monitor and respond quickly to cyber security incidents, and in this case, detected and quickly intercepted unauthorised access to a small number of CEWA email accounts. Supported by an international cyber security firm, CEWA’s IT security team continues to take steps to identify any possible data breaches and limit potential effects on our staff, students and school communities. You may have seen reports in the media that respected organisations worldwide have been subjected to similar illegal activity, and thus CEWA has not been specifically targeted. While investigations are ongoing, a confirmed data breach has been identified at one school and there is no evidence that any student data has been put at risk as a result of the breach. Additional cyber security measures were promptly put in place and the parent community informed. This incident is a timely reminder of the importance of good cyber safety behaviours and additional information on cyber security can be found at https://www.staysmartonline.gov.au/protect-yourself

Fraudulent emails

Several tips are recommended in determining if you have received a fraudulent email: • Use unique passwords across different online accounts.

• Treat any email you did not expect to receive with suspicion.

• CEWA and your school will never request your password in an email or over the phone.

If you have questions or concerns about the safety and security of your personal information, please contact CEWA’s cyber security partner, ES2, on 1800 372 732.”
