• We will collect and grade your ICTWs every Friday.

• If you miss class, you can make up your ICTW at home – they will be posted on my website. (Because of this, there are no ICTW make-ups past Friday.)

ICTW #1• This course is designed as a survey of American

literature, and will primarily discuss American authors and ideas. As young adults it is imperative that you begin to develop your own opinions and ideas about what it means to be an American living in this culture. Please reflect upon, and respond in your best writing to at least one of the following questions (if you are stuck use all questions as prompts):

• What is an American?• What does it mean to be an American?• How would you describe American culture?• What are some common cultural values and beliefs

held by many Americans?• How are Americans viewed globally? What do people

from other countries say/believe about America?

In your table groups (2 minutes MAX!):

• Share your writing with your group members.

For EACH group member:• Choose ONE sentence that you are

proud of. or • Choose an idea that you feel you

could defend (passionate about).

In your table groups (10 minutes MAX!):

The Poster:• Title your poster “What is an American?”

• Introduce your ideas with– “An American is:”

• On the back, please put each group member’s name.

• To receive credit your poster must be clear and legible from across the room.

What is an American?

In your table groups:• Create a poster that represents your

group’s observations of what it means to be an American using the sentences you selected.

• Each poster MUST have ONE sentence for EVERY group member.

• Each sentence should be a different color.

• Thoroughly read the English 5-6 Course Syllabus.

• There will be a Quiz TOMORROW!!!
