Mark Winters, our previous music teacher has also decided to leave Education Queensland and will be replaced this year with Jason Currie as Noosaville’s music and performing arts teacher.

Professional Learning for Our Staff Our ACE vision of everyone being Accomplished, Compassionate and Empowered was in full swing during our pupil free days even before school started! Staff had the opportunity to undertake a series of professional development opportunities based on the themes of ‘Raising the Bar’ and ‘Teamwork’. All staff have now also updated their CPR and undertaken important first aid and specialised health training as well as looking at strategies to put in place in the classroom for working with a diverse range of learner needs. Well done to all staff on their commitment and team approach to this focussed learning over the past week.

Meet the Teacher Meetings Out Meet the Teacher Meetings will be held in Week 3 this term in classrooms. This is an opportunity for families to come along and hear from their child’s teacher about the year ahead, routines and for you to ask any questions. Please save the dates below for your calendar and hope to see many families along for these important information meetings. If you are unable to make it, your child’s class teacher will provide all information for you.

Extra Curricular Activities Term 1 2019

For those new to Noosaville, there are many and varied opportu-nities for learning and fun that are on offer outside of the class-room each term. Current term 1 planned activities are attached and will be updated on our website each term. The term activities are helpful to families who can then plan ahead for lunchtime, before or after school activities for their children. Some activities are provided by outside providers and incur a small fee for the term, while others are free and conducted by our staff. Activities vary from surfing on Friday mornings to dance or karate/martial arts before school to yarn club and games in the hall during lunchtimes etc. See attachment for our term 1 activities.

Excursions and Incursions in 2019 To assist with your budget and other planning for 2019, our incur-sion and excursions plan for term 1 are also attached to this news-letter. Calendar events for the school also appear on our website along with a lot of other information that you might need.

Year 6 Leadership With our Year 6 2019 school leaders already inducted last year, a reminder that all year 6 students are leaders at our school and will undertake a leadership course called ‘Aspire’, to be the Best They Can Be, on Friday 15 February. This is a chance for our oldest stu-dent role models in the school to work together for the day and set goals for themselves and for the rest of their time at Noosaville.

Assemblies on Fridays All Noosaville whole school assemblies are generally held each Friday morning in the hall commencing at 8.40 am and concluding at approximately 9.15 am. This is a chance for our student leaders to take on some of their responsibilities for their roles and for all students at some stage throughout the year to be recognised for one or many aspects of their learning. Performances from classes, year levels, musical, performing and sporting groups also take place on assemblies. Families and parents are very welcome to attend any of our assemblies and it is a time when the school com-munity comes together engaging with the school, students and staff. Our first assembly for the year will be held on Friday 1 February and we will be introducing our youngest learners, our Prep students then to the rest of the school.

Canteen – The Giant Lunchbox and Uniforms Following on from our 2018 success, our school canteen will be open 5 days a week with delicious and healthy food for all of us to enjoy. If you are new to the school, please come and meet Cholena and Gavin and Sue and often Kayla (our P&C President) in the canteen area of the school. They value volunteers, even for a small amount of time and it is a great way to meet new friends and get to know the school and our community. Orders for stu-dent morning teas and lunches delivered to the classroom are taken through ‘school24’ or a paper bag system at the counter. The menu for our canteen is also available through the school’s website. The uniform shop also operates through our canteen and is open 8.00 -9.00 am each morning. Sharyn Rieger Principal

Noosaville Celebrates Welcome back everyone – I hope you all enjoyed a fabulous Christmas holiday. A special welcome to all our new Prep to year 6 families. It was great to see so many take up the opportunity to ‘meet & greet’ the teacher last Friday, to drop off book packs and to enjoy a catch up with friends. There was a lovely ‘community buzz’ in front of the Giant Lunchbox and a big thank you to the P&C, Gavin, Cholena and Mr Luhrs for the barbecue lunch. It has been very pleasing to see how well all the students have settled back into their classroom routines. Thank you to families for ensuring your children are organised and ready to learn from day one!

Noosaville Expects Our school Positive Behaviour for Learning program is framed around our high expectations for students to be caring for them-selves, their learning, others and their school. The ‘caring pro-gram’ is explicitly taught in every classroom with all staff sup-porting students to be the best they can be. Every students’ well-being is at the centre of our planning and a consistent approach to expectations, routines and goals is one of our objectives this year. Over the next couple of weeks I will be visiting every classroom to talk to students and teachers about this and would invite you to talk your child about classroom expectations and goals for this term.

This year we will once again be focus-sing our professional learning and class-room practice in the teaching area of Numeracy. With last year being so suc-cessful in terms of developing policy and pedagogy in this area we will be ensur-ing that this work is embedded in all classrooms across the school. As part of our professional development program for staff last week, we reflected on some of the successes of 2018. One of my highlights was the increased levels of students’ confidence to com-municate their thinking and justify their reasoning – and not just in Maths lessons. Noosaville State School’s vision is for students to be Accomplished, Compassionate and Empowered to be the best they can be. Our staff also reflected on this vision and what it meant to them and how they intend to enact it for their students, their peers and the school community this year. Empowering our year six students to be role models for the rest of our students is one of the objectives of our ‘Aspire Activity day’. Based around the theme of ‘Leading With or Without the Badge’, feedback from last year’s program was very positive from all con-cerned and the benefits were clear with the way last year’s year six cohort conducted themselves. This program will be conducted by the Unleashing Personal Potential organisation and will take place in our hall all day on Friday 15 February. There will be no Assembly on this day Alasdair Scott Deputy Principal

Please be aware that we have some students who have

severe allergies including nuts allegies which can be life

threatening. A letter will be sent home for families

asking for your understanding when packing lunches.

Wishing families, staff and the wider Noosaville community a very warm welcome to Noosaville State School and to the 2019 school year. My name is Vicki Anderson-Bain. I welcome students to acknowledge me by my name, Vicki. I work at Noosaville State School 5 days a fortnight. I also currently work in two other local State Schools across the fortnight. I started my teaching career as a Learning Support Teacher, having completed a Graduate Diploma of Special Education through Victoria College (Deakin University). Since completing a Master’s Degree in School Counselling and Guid-ance and a Bachelor of Psychology, I have 21 years experience working as a Guidance Officer in South West Queensland and Sun-shine Coast. My role covers four key areas – child safety, child well-being, child learning and child school attendance. While I am happy to be contacted directly, it is preferable you always go to your child’s teacher first regarding any concerns you may have about your child’s schooling. We have a robust school referral process, initiated by teachers with family permission for children to access various departmental services and internal school interventions. Noosaville State School has a close working relationship with Child Youth and Mental Health Services and other outside agencies in-cluding private mental health practitioners. A big welcome to our 2019 Prep students and all new students to Noosaville State School: Seeing the bright and eager faces of our new Prep students reminds me why I entered the world of educa-tion. These children have a thirst for learning. They come with a beautiful imagination and a variety of experiences. It is a privilege to be part of their journey. To ensure our Prep children and all oth-er children who are new to the Noosaville State School community, connect with their new school setting, connect with peers and con-nect with educators, it is paramount they attend school daily. Daily routines help children feel secure and safe because they can predict what is happening next. Daily contact with school ensures young children develop social skills and interpersonal skills to assist them in establishing relationships that can sometimes become life long friendships. Daily contact with school enables children to become more familiar with all the different educators they will meet in their weekly timetable. Daily contact at school assists young children and families to feel connected and belong to our Noosaville State School community. It is very easy to feel left out, disconnected and anxious when school days are not attended. Thus attending school every day sets all children up for the best opportunity for success both now and well into the future. I invite you to view the YouTube clip regarding attendance and routines. Wishing everyone a great week J Vicki Anderson-Bain, Guidance Officer

Welcome back! And a very special welcome to all the year 4

students about to start their Italian language learning journey! The Italian room has moved from the year 4 block to a lovely classroom situated between the Music room and Chappy’s room in Q block. A big thank you to Dave and Jason our wonderful groundsmen who have helped me with the move so I could set up the new Italian Room. It’s really starting to look like ‘little Ita-ly!’

The festival of Carnevale is currently in full swing in Italy! Carne-vale literally means “without meat” and is a celebration that goes over several weeks in Venice, Italy before finishing at the begin-ning of Lent. As Italy is predominately a Catholic country, the 40 days of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday and finishes with Easter Sunday is a time of abstinence and fasting. Therefore, the celebration of Carnevale is somewhat the opposite! This is a time of eating, drinking, opulent parties, parades and dressing up in traditional costumes and masks. The city of Venice has been cele-brating this festival in style for hundreds of years! This term, the year 5 classes are looking forward to learning all about this wonderful tradition and to create an exquisite Carne-vale mask of their own. I will be asking the students in year 5 to think about how they would like to decorate their masks and to bring in any lace, sequins, feathers or craft items that they would like to add to their creation. All the masks, paint, glue and other decorative items will be provided by the school. The year 4 classes will also be learning about this Italian celebra-tion along with being introduced to the country of Italy, it’s cul-ture and language. They will be exploring the Italian alphabet and how to pronounce each letter and blend, counting from 1 – 10 and learning some basic greetings in Italian. Year 6 students will be revising previous learning and partici-pating in games that will give them more confidence with speak-ing and writing in Italian. They will be comparing how housing in Italy and Australia differ and will be working towards describing items in a favourite room of a house.

CARNEVALE PARADE You are all invited to come and watch the year 5 Italian students showcase their mask creations on Parade, Friday March 29. The year 4 students will also be performing a song that they have been learning in class. If you have any questions regarding any of the above infor-mation, please do not hesitate to email me [email protected] or make a time to see me before or after school.

Ciao ! Signora Maria
