WELCOME ABOARD THE
MOST MODERN SHIP OF
THE GERMAN NAVY
2
It takes several years before the idea of a new frig-
ate is formed and built and handed over to the
owner. In the case of the SACHSEN-Class type
F124, the initial work began in June 1993.
The German government conducted a study to
design a new type of frigate in order to replace the
guided missile destroyers of the Lütjens-Class,
which by that time were already 25 years in ser-
vice and needed to be replaced. The new type of
frigate should be a specialised major air defender.
Germany’s Federal Office for Defence Technology
and Procurement specified the basic frame work
but permitted the contractor a great amount of
leeway regarding the design. American ships had
been at the technological forefront up to this time.
At the end of the definition phase, which lasted
three years, a design had been created that defined
new standards worldwide.
The unusual feature of this project was the fact
that the main components of the complex F124
system – such as radar equipment, automation,
navigation and weapons system – were developed
simultaneously with the construction of the frig-
ates themselves. This way, the development and
construction time of the project was significantly
reduced.
While some countries based their new concept of
frigates on the HORIZON-Program, and others
preferred the AEGIS Weapon System, Germany,
together with the Netherlands and Canada, con-
centrated on air defence capabilities and pursued
the development of new radar sensors and air de-
fence software. With a contract value of $1.5 bil-
lion, it was one of the largest procurement pro-
grams of the German Armed Forces and involved
around 800 subcontractors throughout Germany
as well as in other NATO countries.
On 14th September 2001, construction of FGS
HESSEN began at the shipyard Nordseewerke in the
city of Emden, Germany. In June 2003 Miss Anke
Koch, wife of the Minister President of the Federal
German state Hessen, was the guest of honour for
the naming ceremony. On 25th January 2005 the

Frigate HESSEN conducting Flight Operations
HESSEN left the dockyard for the first time to con-
duct first sea trials.
On 21st April, more then ten years after the decision
to construct the SACHSEN-Class was made, FGS
HESSEN was handed over to the German Navy.
It is the third ship in German naval history that car-
ries the name HESSEN; The first ship named HESSEN
was an imperial battleship in the beginning of the 20th
century. After that, a HAMBURG-Class destroyer of
the Bundesmarine followed the tradition of the name
HESSEN.

The frigates of the
SACHSEN-Class were
designed to replace the
aging Guided Missile De-
stroyers of the LÜTJENS
-Class thus filling the
arising gap in the Force
Air Defence capabilities.
With this in mind, the
goal was not only to re-
place the former capabili-
ties but also to extend
them to the field of Area
Air Defence. This includ-
ed the integration into
the NATO Air Defence
Ground Environment as
well as the edition of Full
Task Force Command
and Control Facilities.
The wide range of risks
which are now much
more difficult to predict
than in the past require
more flexibility in the use
of military assets. Taking
this into consideration the
ship’s mission goes be-
yond that of solely Air
Defence and provides the
ship with capabilities in all
warfare areas. Only this
can ensure the presence
and operational sustaina-
bility required during op-
erations in distant waters,
i.e. embargo and crisis
operations as well as the
support of Rapid Reaction
Forces.
AIR DEFENCE
and detection radar
SMART-L are both new
European develop-
ments. Another new
development is the
command and weapons
control system with a
fully distributed data
processing system, a
distributed real time
and a redundant fiber
glass data network. The
ARMAMENT
Besides the standard artil-
leries the ship carries
“Harpoon” m iss i l e s
against surface targets,
Standard Missile 2 against
air/missile threat, and the
“Rolling Airframe Missile”
system for self-defence
purposes. The multifunc-
tional Active Phased Array
Radar (APAR) and the
long range air surveillance
The ship is provided with capabilities in all warfare areas, but its specialty is air warfare due to long range radars
and weapon systems.

MISSIONS
FGS HESSEN took part
in operation UNIFIL in
2008, which had the pur-
pose of interdicting the
smuggling of weapons
between Lebanon and
Hisbola militia. FGS HES-
SEN was the first F124
frigate to take part in an
international operation.
FGS HESSEN later
proved its capabilities as
a “Major Air-Defender” as
the first ship of the Ger-
man Navy in the USS
DWIGHT D. EISEN-
HOWER Carrier Strike
Group. In 2011, FGS HES-
SEN conducted its first
German Operational Sea-
training (GOST) in Ply-
mouth, Great Britain. As

acteristic x-forms with

stituted the first contin-

nean Sea. After that
FGS HESSEN was fully

ticipation in the broad

nificant share in NATO,

ensure the safety and
efficiency of future de-
ployments. Another
GOST was passed suc-
cessfully in 2017. At
present FGS HESSEN is
part of pre-deployment
training cycle and subse-
quent operational de-
ployment of USS HAR-
RY S. TRUMAN Carrier
Strike Group.

For this, the F124 class
is equipped with eleven
independent ventilation
zones. The whole sys-
tem is designed as a se-
ries of adjoining sub-
citadels, which provide
continuous protection
against NBC-Warfare
agents. A major role is
also played by the newly
developed automation
equipment which, with
the help of 7000 meas-

Emergencies
In case of emergencies you will hear a pipe “SAFEGUARD, SAFEGUARD” followed by instruc-
tions.
All other bell signals are internal drills.
The following signals are sounding in case of an Emergency in the whole ship. A stripe means a
long ring and a point represents a shorter ring. All signals come with a pipe. All hallways in the
ship show arrows with the way to the nearest emergency exit. Keep calm all the time and stick
to your liaison person!
- ••• Prepare to leave the ship
•• •• •• Fire on board
- - Man over board
In any case please come up to the Bridge.
You received a lifejacket when embarking; please put it on when told to.
Safety
Please open the bulkhead doors carefully, as the high pressures may cause injury. Also,
please watch your head and feet, especially in the steep staircases.
At night, it is strictly forbidden to go on the upper deck. All exits are monitored by a door
alarm system. If you cause an alarm, please call 230 immediately.
Because of RadHaz- States (Radiation Hazard), it is not possible to go to all places on the
upper deck. Feel free to ask our crew if in doubt.
For your own safety, you should be accompanied the whole time while on board.
Sickbay
The ship has full medical facilities. If you feel like you might need it, don’t hesitate to ask for med-
ical assistance.
Important telephone numbers:
Sickbay: 222 Doctor’s private cabin: 207
Bridge: 266 Navigation: 299
