A MAN NAMED JOHN It would have been so easy to rel-
egate this scrawny eccentric fellow
to the sidelines. He was evidently a
loner, at least in the beginning. His
message was not easy to hear –
something about geing ready and
preparing….
He kept pointing toward a time
not yet here but almost, he insisted.
It would have been easy to dismiss
him, yet there was something about
him – something that made his
claims credible. Among other things,
he quoted liberally from the earlier
prophets, locating himself in that
long and distinguished line of eccen-
trics. Most of them lost their head.
Jesus would call him “The greatest
man ever born of a woman”. Through
the appearance of an angel, Zachari-
ah, John’s father, came to know that
his elderly, barren wife would give
birth. In those days, Zachariah
uered his famous hymn of praise
that has come down to us through
the ages. In it, he shows that he has
come to grasp the significance of his
son’s birth, “And you, my child, shall
be called the prophet of the Most High;
for you will go before the Lord to pre-
pare His way….”
On June 24, the Church celebrates
the birth of John the Baptist. We re-
member the story of this remarkable
man’s birth and turbulent life. These
days, millions of Catholics will hear
the story again and perhaps marvel
at the simple fact that one man came
to the world scene to proclaim a
message that the world is still trying
to grasp and fulfill. The message
that John proclaimed is two fold:
The Savior of the world is about to
come, and prepare yourself to re-
ceive Him.
John’s message is as pertinent
today as it was two thousand years
ago. Everyone on the planet earth
could do well to hear John’s clarion
call. From all of the misery, dark-
ness, divisions and violence, from all
of the suffering, hunger and war,
from all of the depression and bro-
kenness of the human condition,
there is ONE who has come to heal,
rescue and lead us to freedom. How
this world longs to hear the hope-
filled proclamation of John!
In a time when this world is so
complex and our wealth is so exorbi-
tant many are still struggling to find
truth and meaning in it all. The iro-

Saint Mary–Saint Catherine of
Siena is an urban, Roman
Catholic Parish formed in 2006 from two
historic Charlestown parishes. We are an
intentionally inclusive community welcom-
ing all of the many people who make up
our diverse neighborhood. Because our
lives are nourished by the Eucharist, we
strive to build a vibrant Parish that devel-
ops and strengthens our faith and worship.
With a goal of being community-oriented in
the Spirit of the Gospel, we are involved in
the local and global issues of our times. We
are therefore dedicated to service, action,
and compassion.

ny is astonishing: our progress has not eliminated our fundamental need
for the hope that is held out to us by John. One solitary voice – crying in a
desert wilderness. That voice is crying out for you and for me. Listen and
prepare to encounter the person about whom John speaks – Jesus Christ.

Celebration of BaptismCelebration of BaptismCelebration of BaptismCelebration of Baptism
Have you been worshiping with us, but never officially took the step to become Catholic?
Have you been away from the church and have now returned, but want to know more? Have you been a Catholic all your life, but never celebrated all the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist?) Have you joined us from a different background and would now like to find out more about the Catholic Church? If any of the above questions apply to you, we would love to help you in your journey. Or, if you know of anyone who could answer YES to any of the above questions, perhaps you could extend an invitation to them! In recent years, there has been a great increase in the number of adults who are
joining the Catholic Church. RCIA is a program designed to help non-Catholics and non-practicing Catholics learn more about the Catholic faith through a series of classes, discussions, prayer times and ceremonies. This program helps people grow in faith and knowledge of God, and develop a deeper relationship with God as they consider be-coming Catholic. If you are not yet sure whether you want to become Catholic, you are still welcome to participate as you make your decision. There is no obligation to join the Catholic Church and regardless of your decision you are always welcome here at St. Mary-St. Catherine of Siena Parish. To find out how you may participate in the RCIA process, please contact Sr. Nancy Citro, SND at (617) 242- 4664 or [email protected]. We look forward to welcoming you!
Sacristy Repairs and Remodeling
Over the next few weeks, the sacristy in the upper church is undergoing major repairs. I understand that in 1961 there was a fire in that space and, when things were put back together, the back wall was never insulated. Conse-quently, the space is freezing in the winter and holy oils and other items have frozen. Water damage from frozen areas has damaged vestments and books and the like. Furthermore, the space was designed to serve liturgies as they were in the 1800’s and is inadequate for this time. Storage for vestments and space for ministers to prepare for Sunday Mass is badly needed.
To address all these issues the space is being remodeled and upgraded. We expect to be accommo-dating the construction period for a few weekends. However, with storage in the lower church hall and in front of the St. Joseph altar area there should be no inconvenience for all concerned.
We will include pictures of the progress in coming weeks!
