aim : to demonstrate resonance by using a
measuring cylinder filled with water procedure :
a 100 ml measuring cylinder is filled with about45 ml of water
a tuning fork i struck and held near the open endof measuring cylinder. the sound produce fromthe inside of measuring cylinder is notedcarefullyat close distance
this procedure is repeated using other tuningforks. the loudness of the sounds producedbydifferent tuning forks are compared
-

observation
a very loud sound is produced by forcedoscillation of the air column inside the
measuring cylinder when one vibrating
tuning forks is used.
inference : an air column which is
subjected to forced oscillation at its natural
frquency will vibrate with maximum
amplitude to produce a loud soundwhereby resonance occurs

today, we have learnt about
damping
system undergo decrease in oscillation
resonance
a system oscillate at its maximum amplitude
when there is an external force acting on it. this external force must have the same
frequency with the system's natural frequency
The frequency at which an object tends to
vibrate with when hit, struck, plucked, strummedor somehow disturbed is known as the naturalfrequency of the object

Effects of refraction
refraction of water waves of sea water1.When water waves propagate from sea to
beach, the water waves follow the shape
of the beach2. It is because the water waves propagatedfrom the deep water to the shallow water
3. The speed and wavelength decrease as
the waves approach the beach and hencewater wave is refracted towards normal

conclusion
refraction is the change in direction when
speed of waves changes when travel at
different depth
deep area, velocity is high, so wavelength
increases
phenomena ofrefraction can be seen at
the changing of shape of waves when thewaves approaches the shore

Sound Waves
Sound wave is a mechanical wave thatrequires a medium for its propagation.
Therefore sound wave cannot propagate
in vacuum.
The medium for propagation can be solid,
liquid or gas.
Sound waves propagate fastest in solid
and slowest in gas.

Sound Wave as a Longitudinal Wave
Sound wave is a series ofcompression andrarefaction of layers of airmolecules repeatedlythrough space.
The forward andbackward vibration of theair molecules in thedirection of motion of a
sound wave shows thatsound is a longitudinalwave.

Types of Sound Wave
Human ear is capable of hearing sound with
frequency in the range of 20Hz 20,000Hz, andthe sound wave with frequency in this range iscalled an audio/Sonic wave.
Sound wave with frequency lower than 20Hz iscalled an Infrasonic Wave.
Sound wave with frequency higher than20,000Hz is called an Ultrasonic wave.

Speed of Sound Wave
Speed of sound wave in solids is greater than in
liquids, which is greater than in gases.
Speed of sound in air is not affected by
pressure, but is affected by the temperature.
As temperature increases, speed of sound in air(and other gases) is also increases.
Sound usually travels more slowly with greater
altitude, due to reduced temperature.Speed of
sound can be calculated by the equation
v = f

Pitch and Loudness
Loudness is influenced by
the amplitude of thesound wave. The greaterthe amplitude of soundwave, the higher theloudness of the wave.
The pitch of a sound ishigh or low of the sound. The pitch of sound isdetermined by itsfrequency. The higher thefrequency, the higher thepitch.

Reflection of Sound
Wave
The clicking sound of thestop watch can be hearedclearly when the angle of
incidence, i is equal to theangle of reflection, r.
Sound waves obey thelaw of reflection. That is,
the angle of incidence isequal to the angle ofreflection.

Refraction of Sound Wave 1
The amplitudeof the soundwave increaseswhen a balloon
filled withcarbon dioxideis placed
between thespeaker andthe
microphone.
Explanation:
-
8/12/2019 Welcome 5S1 to Physics Class 2014
52/62
Explanation:
Carbon dioxide is denser
than air. The sound wave is
refracted approaching thenormal when the wavepropagates from the air
into the balloon, andaway from normal whenmoving out from theballoon.
As a result, the balloonacts as a biconvex lensand converge the soundwave at a point.

the

Helium gas is less dense than
air. The sound wave is refracted
away from the normal when
the wave propagates from the
air into the balloon, and closer
to the normal when moving outfrom the balloon.
As a result, the wave is
diverged to a wider area and
causes the amplitude of the
sound wave decreases.

Diffraction of Sound Wave
The street cleaner can hear the sound ofthe radio even though it is behind an
obstacle.
Explanation:
The sound of the radio spreads around thecorner of the wall due to diffraction ofsound wave.

Interference of Sound Wave
Alternating loud and soft soundsare detected as themicrophone is moved from leftto right.
Explanation:
The two loud speakers are
sources of two coherent soundwaves as they are connectedto the same audio signalgenerator.
The alternating loud and softsounds are caused byinterference of the soundwave.
