Last Week’s RecapDisciples Keep the Gospel Central
When we fail to conduct ourselves "in step with the truth of the Gospel" (Gal. 2:14), we are in serious error. We are to live in such a way as to make the teaching about God our Savior
attractive to our neighbors (Titus 2:10) and to win their respect by responsible and godly living (1 Thess. 4:11-12). Thus our preaching and teaching of the Gospel-that is, our ministries of catechesis-must include teaching the godly
manner of living that accords with the sound doctrines of the Gospel (Titus 2:1).

A revival of godliness (obedience) will always produce a revival of learning. It does not flow
the other way; learning does not produce godliness.

Week 4Disciples Confess and Repent
Without confession I will remain unforgiven—not because God doesn’t forgive, but because a
refusal to confess is a rejection of forgiveness. Refusing to confess, I refuse to make forgiveness
my own through confession of wrongdoing and joyful gratitude over it not being counted against
me.Miroslav Volf
Week 4Disciples Confess and Repent
Luke 7:36-50
Week 4Disciples Confess and Repent
Luke 7:36-5036One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and
he went into the Pharisee's house and took his place at the table. 37And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of
ointment, 38and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his
feet and anointed them with the ointment.
Week 4Disciples Confess and Repent
Luke 7:36-5039Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this,
he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.” 40And Jesus
answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he answered, “Say it, Teacher.” 41“A
certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of
them will love him more?” 43Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.” And
he said to him, “You have judged rightly.”
Week 4Disciples Confess and Repent
Luke 7:36-5044Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you
gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45You gave
me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. 46You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment.
47Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48And he said to her, “Your sins are
forgiven.” 49Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who
even forgives sins?” 50And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
Week 4Disciples Confess and Repent
1 John 1:8-2:2, James 5:168If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is
faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
1My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have
an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours
only but also for the sins of the whole world.
16Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.

Week 4Disciples Confess and Repent
The verb (metanoeo) is the New Testament’s chief expression for repentance. In classical Greek it can
mean to know or to become aware of something afterwards. This puts our past actions in a different
light. Basically, metanoeo involves a change of mind. However, in the New Testament this carries significant implications. Repentance means a change of mind that
leads to a change of lifestyle.

Week 4Disciples Confess and Repent
2 Corinthians 78For even if I made you grieve with my letter, I do not
regret it—though I did regret it, for I see that that letter grieved you, though only for a while. 9As it is, I
rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief,
so that you suffered no loss through us.10For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation
without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. 11For see what earnestness this godly grief has
produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have
proved yourselves innocent in the matter.
Week 4Disciples Confess and Repent
Repentance involves:
1) Recognition of offenses against God
2) Turning away from sin in view of God’s gracious provision through Christ
3) A new attitude and desire towards God and His commands
