From The Pastor’s Desk Weekly Readings, & Activities

Please consider giving of your TIME, TALENTS and GIFTS to Holy Spirit. It takes a FAMILY to help this parish grow!

I wonder how many times the Lord’s Prayer has been prayed – a million, a billion, perhaps closer to a trillion times? And yet we continue to pray this prayer given to us by Jesus himself. Why do we persist in saying this prayer? Why do we pray at all? Like most basic questions, there is no simple and easy answer that seems to satisfy us completely.

It’s something like asking a person why they love someone. Try that one. Ask yourself why you love the one you love. We can give all kinds of partial answers but our words don’t seem to completely satisfy us. But there is one thing we do know. In our hearts, we know that we love that person and in a way it doesn’t matter whether or not we can put that love into words. What matters most is that we put that love into actions.

Basically, love is quite mysterious, but we need to love and be loved as much as we need to breathe. It’s the same way with prayer. Prayer is quite mysterious, but we need to pray and we need to allow our prayers to lead us to action. In his letter, St. James tells us that it’s not much good to just say comforting words and yet not to feed our brothers and sisters who are hungry.

So even though we may not be able to give a satisfying explanation for prayer, let’s at least try to describe it even if our description is not complete. One theologian says that, “Christian prayer is an openness setting the Christian free to receive God. It is the basic quality of our Christian life.” (Ladislaus Boros)

When we are open to other people, to their love and friendship, we find ourselves ready to receive what others can offer. And we also find that we are willing to give something of ourselves to others. It’s no secret that a closed, locked-up life is a sad one, and that an open and loving life can lead to great satisfaction and happiness.

That’s how it is with prayer. “Christian prayer is an openness setting the Christian free to receive God”. Through living in a prayerful way, we allow God into our lives. We open our whole existence to God who is present everywhere, but is concealed. The prayerful person allows God into every aspect of his or her life. As you can see by this short description, prayer is not just saying prayers, but living prayerfully – living in God’s presence. When we find ourselves letting God into every aspect of our lives, we are then living in a prayerful way.

Did you Know?

Did you know that we have an Annual Fall Festival at the end of September? This is our largest fund raising event of the year. We have food that represents our many cultures, games for the kids,

music, a silent auction and so much more! Did you know that our volunteers have stopped coming to help with this event? The same people have done this event for years, and they are tired. We are at risk of losing an important fellowship and fundraising event without help from YOU! Without this event, our church AC cannot get replaced and other maintenance will be put on hold which will affect our buildings and our ability to use them for sacrament classes and faith formation classes. You are here. God has brought you to this community. Show you care and want to help...we need YOU...yes, YOU! African Community Meeting

TODAY: Sunday, July 28 The African Community will be meeting today, Sunday, July 28 in the Community Center Room 212 at noon (after the 11:00am Mass) . For more information, contact Bibian Obinwanne at 469-273-0356. New Photo Directory Pick-up/Purchase

On the weekend of August 3/4 at all the Masses, there will be a special blessing of school backpacks! Children are in-vited to bring their school backpacks to Mass and Father will bless both the children and the backpacks for a special send-off before the new school year

begins! Additionally, all school educators will be given a special blessing as they, too, begin a new school year. Additionally, please join us in the dining room after the 9 a.m., 11 a.m. & 1 p.m. Masses for an ice cream social and meet some of your fellow classmates and parishioners. On-Site Faith Formation registration takes place Sunday, August 4 & August 11 after all the Masses (except 5:30 p.m.) in the dining room. Please refer to the adjacent column for detailed information regarding registration. If you’re looking to join our children’s Catechetical Team for the 2019/20 year, contact Deborah on how you can signup to be a catechist, aide, hall/parking lot monitor or substitute! We are always in need of adults to help out on Sunday mornings. Our current needs are great! At our 9 a.m. classes, we need aides in 3rd, 4th & 5th Grades; at 11 a.m., we need aides in K & 6th with teaching help in 1st & 2nd Grades; and in newly added 6:45 p.m. classes (which by the way are close to full), we need teaching help in Grades 2, 5 & 6. Give Deborah a call if you’d be interested in serving in our Children’s Ministry!

Top Two Reasons to help out in Children’s Faith Formation: (1) Help Nourish the Faith of Children…“ The most important reason to get involved is so that we can help nourish the faith in children. If we don’t get involved,

who will teach them and prepare them to be active members in the parish as they grow?” and (2) Meet Wonderful People…“ I have met many wonderful people. “If all I did was come to Mass, all I would know would be faces in the crowd.” “If you don’t have children in the program, it is a great way to meet other spiritual people and become more involved in the activities and community of the parish.” To the Holy Spirit Faith Community: These wonderful children coming into our Faith Formation Program are the future of the Catholic Community at large. Without you, however, our program does not happen. Won’t you consider being a catechist or a catechist aide? It is such a wonderful opportunity to be a part of a child’s faith development; how could you not want to be a part of that? SACRAMENTS & SUCH: We welcome the newest members of our Parish Community who celebrated the Sacrament of Baptism on Saturday, July 20: Mark Guillermo Pena and on Sunday, July 21: Michael Hernandez!

Faith Formation Registration Information ¨ All families wishing to sign children up for Faith

Formation must be registered members of Holy Spirit. If you haven’t already completed a Parish Census Form to be a part of our wonderful faith community, we ask that you do that first before picking up registration paperwork for Faith Formation.

¨ Children registering for sacramental preparation MUST HAVE completed the required one year of Faith Formation last year, whether it was at Holy Spirit or another parish. If it was at another parish, a Letter of Attendance Verification from that parish MUST be on file with our office prior to registering for sacramen-tal preparation. We will also need a copy of the child’s baptismal certificate before accepting sacramental preparation paperwork.

¨ The Sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated in the 8th Grade or older and First Communion in the 2nd Grade or older. However, attendance for two consecutive years in Faith Formation/Youth Ministry remains a diocesan mandatory requirement for sacra-mental preparation. We check attendance when you register for sacramental preparation to ensure children/youth meet the two-year requirement and that attendance was satisfactory the year prior, which means six absences or less for 2018/19, per our Attendance Policy.

¨ For paperwork received on the 4th or 11th, all Faith Formation/sacrament activity fees must be paid in full by Thursday, August 15 before your child will be placed on a class roster. Current class fees are $55.00 for one child; $110.00 for two children; and $125.00 for three or more children. Sacrament activity fees are separate. Class fees will increase again as of Monday, August 19 so please register now! SPECIAL NOTE: We will not accept registrations after Thursday, August 15 in order to prepare for the first day of class and Parent Meet & Greet on Sunday, August 25. You can still obtain paperwork Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (NO FRIDAYS), but it will not be processed until after the Labor Day Holiday.

¨ Children registering after August 15 will attend class on Sunday, September 8. Additionally, in order to make sure our Parent Meet & Greet runs smoothly, we will be unable to distribute or accept registration paperwork on Sunday, August 25!!

If you received a fee statement in the mail, those are now due in order for your child to be placed on a class roster for the upcoming year. We cannot guarantee class availability for those with outstanding balances. Please contact Deborah with any questions or if payment is an issue. All outstanding fees must be paid in full by Thursday, August 15. Credit card payments made be made on-line at our parish website at www.holyspiritcatholic.com.
