here is a department in UFCD that dental stu-dents can’t avoid since all students must spend

time in its labs and clinics from the time they start dental school until they graduate. The department of operative dentistry is responsible for a major portion of the clinical instruction in the college, providing nine-teen core courses both pre-clinical and clinical. The department is responsible for student instruction and patient care in the Sim Lab, Ackley Operative Clinic, and Oral Health Maintenance Clinic. In addition to the pre-doctoral program, the department houses the Internationally-Educated Dentist Program where dentists from other countries complete two years of training which qualifies them for the Florida Dental Licensure Examination. Operative Dentistry also enjoys an affiliation with Santa Fe Community College, where students from the dental hygiene and the dental assisting programs come to UFCD to gain hands-on experience with patient treat-ment.

The department members carry on various research efforts; most noted of these being a $25 million grant from NIH-NIDCR to initiate a Dental Practice Based Research Network (DPBRN) in collaboration with the University of Alabama, Birmingham. The DPBRN conducts clinical research among practicing dentists to study the outcomes of dental diagnosis and treatments under real-life conditions. The department is committed to staying abreast of the latest evidence-based techniques in dentistry. “Operative dentistry has evolved in the last three-four years to focus on providing esthetic dentistry with min-imum invasion and minimum loss of tooth structure,” said Paul Blaser, D.D.S., M.S.D., chair of operative dentistry. CEREC, one of these new technologies, is an impressive machine that creates crowns, veneers, and

partial crowns of ceramic that are beautiful life-like replacements for diseased tooth parts. The CEREC machine consists of a computer system that creates a virtual three-dimensional model of the patient’s tooth from a digital photo image. The software then proposes a restoration that is transmitted to a robotic milling unit that produces the crown from a solid block of porcelain. The porcelain is then bonded to the tooth, strengthening and restoring the tooth in appearance and function. Operative Dentistry faculty and staff are dedicated to providing dental students with a quality education in contemporary, minimally invasive dentistry and committed to research and scholarly activity keeping abreast of the rapidly developing and evolving art and science of operative dentistry.

UFCD Homecoming Float

UFCD faculty and staff did it again this year. Halloween was a success, and we had staff and faculty running around the build-ing in all sorts of costumes and fun attire. L-to-R: Cindy Bachus, Terry Pendrey and Valerie Buie decided to show-up in their house clothes and impress us with their domestic looks. Gail Mitchell, Censeri Abare and Christina Haskins (L-to-R) decided to give us their best looks and dressed as the Moulin Rouge girls - they looked like they just arrived from Paris. And there were “Dolan’s Mustang Dudes” featuring Dean Teresa Dolan, Butch Dees, Charles Lesch, Sam Brill, Lee Mintz and David Soares (L-to-R). Thanks to all for showing us a great Halloween!
