Goal

The goal of the ESL Teacher Preparation Grants is to help candidates obtain a Virginia license to teach English as a Second Language (PK-12), and to assume teaching positions as quickly as possible.

Both cohorts begin each Spring semester.

PRE-SERVICE is designed for students who do not have a teaching license.

IN-SERVICE is designed for teaching professionals who seek an additional license to teach English as a Second Language.

Cohorts

The pre-service and in-service cohorts complete the curriculum together, taking all classes and participating in all activities. Participants are allowed to transfer one course into the program.

Licensure Component

Participants complete seven courses (21 semester

credits) of course work for licensure. Pre-

service candidates must also complete a 6-credit internship (student teaching). In-service candidates receive their ESL endorsement upon completion of the seven courses. While only the licensure component is tuition-supported, participants can take additional coursework for a masters degree.

All candidates must complete six credits of foreign language (can be taken prior to the program).

Once admitted, students will have the tuition* for their licensure courses paid by two grants from the U.S. Dept. of Education. The grants have been funded since 2002, and will formally end on September 30, 2007.

*Unfortunately, the grants cannot pay for books.

Field Work - Pre-Service

In addition to coursework, the project will place you in a school with a mentor (a veteran ESL teacher) for one to two days per week during the first Spring semester.

Internship Options – Pre-Service

An internship experience is required for licensure for pre-service cohort members. Two options are available to meet the needs of most individuals:

Student Teaching Internship.

One-term daytime internship in the classroom of a cooperating teacher. Intern assumes co-teaching/independent teaching responsibilities.

One-year Teaching Experience This option is available only to participants who are employed as full-time, provisionally licensed ESL teachers.

Initial ESL Teaching – Pre-Service

The project will provide assistance for candidates to be employed as provisionally-licensed ESL teachers in Fall semester (after four courses in Spring and Summer).

If employed as a teacher, participants will receive mentoring from GMU during first year in the classroom, if requested.

Provisionally-licensed teachers will also take one class in Fall, Spring and Summer to complete the program for the full license.

Field Work - In-Service

In addition to coursework, in-service participants conduct action research projects. The projects focus on challenges within their own classroom or school.

Initial ESL Teaching – In-Service

In-service teachers are encouraged to begin teaching ESL as soon as possible. However, the project realizes that a change of positions may not be immediately feasible.

If employed as an ESL teacher during the life of the grants (02-07), participants will receive mentoring from GMU during first year in the classroom, if requested.

Technological Support

Once you received your letter of formal acceptance into the Graduate School of Education, you were assigned a “G number” and a PIN. These two numbers will enable you to access a wide array of services from computing to library privileges and even fitness centers. The following list of links will get you started in your exploration. There are two actions you do need to take before February to make your computing transactions as painless as possible. Those are itemized first on the list.

You need to load a free antivirus protection package on your computer. This action is critical to help prevent the spread of worms and viruses between e-mail correspondences. After installation, you can also create automatic updates by doing the following (for PC Windows users):

– Click on the START button– Right Click on MY COMPUTER– Click on Properties– Click on the Automatic Updates Tab and follow the prompts

Virus Protection Software: Norton AntiVirus (NAV)

The university has executed a license agreement with Symantec for Norton AntiVirus Software. This license currently covers the personal computers of George Mason University students while enrolled at the university. Although you may choose to use it on your personal machine, you should keep in mind that the rights to use this software belong to George Mason University.

There are two ways to acquire NAV: Download from the web (Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP, Mac OS). Purchase on CD from Patriot Computers (Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP, Mac OS, OS2,

server version).

The download process takes from one to two hours at 56K baud rate. The files have been compressed to approximately 25MB. If you would like to download the software, go to <http://itusupport.gmu.edu/downloads>. If you would prefer to have a CD copy, you may purchase the media for $9.99 from Patriot Computers. If you would like to have it mailed to your house, call Patriot Computers at 703-993-4100 (shipping charges are additional). If you have questions, you can send an e-mail to compstor@gmu.edu.
