OUR COMMUNITY WITH ONE ANOTHER CONSISTS SOLELY IN WHAT CHRIST HAS DONE TO BOTH OF US. THIS IS TRUE NOT MERELY AT THE BEGINNING, AS THOUGH IN THE COURSE OF TIME SOMETHING ELSE WERE TO BE ADDED TO OUR COMMUNITY; IT REMAINS SO FOR ALL THE FUTURE AND TO ALL ETERNITY. I HAVE COMMUNITY WITH OTHERS AND I SHALL CONTINUE TO HAVE IT ONLY THROUGH JESUS CHRIST. THE MORE GENUINE AND THE DEEPER OUR C O M M U N I T Y B E C O M E S , T H E M O R E W I L L EVERYTHING ELSE BETWEEN US RECEDE, THE MORE CLEARLY AND PURELY WILL JESUS CHRIST AND HIS WORK BECOME THE ONE AND ONLY THING THAT IS VITAL BETWEEN US. WE HAVE ONE ANOTHER ONLY THROUGH CHRIST, BUT THROUGH CHRIST WE DO HAVE ONE ANOTHER, WHOLLY, FOR ETERNITY.

WELCOME TO CAROLINE SPRINGS ANGLICAN. We are excited to present you with a vision for our church’s future which has been growing and maturing in our hearts for three years. Vision is the preferred future of a church that enables it’s people to see a better story ahead for themselves and those for whom they care. It brings hope and provides direction and insight for decision making.

We believe that this vision comes to you having been saturated in prayer, inspired by the Scriptures, and sealed with the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

As you read, please pray that God would open your heart to see His heart for the people of our church and the people of Caroline Springs and beyond. His heart which is seeking for believers who will worship Him in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24).

Pray that what you read would land on you with a sense of urgency and God-given gravity.

In the following pages, we pray that you’ll get a taste for what God wants to do in us and through us for His glory.

Here’s where our story begins… Our church’s mission launched in 2004, when plans were forged for a new church plant in the outer west of Melbourne. Meeting as a small group in various locations, we eventually built our own facility in partnership with the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne, and in October 2008, Caroline Springs Anglican opened its doors as a new church in a new community.

Since then, we have flourished as a diverse gathering of believers, w i t h m a n y c u l t u r a l a n d ecclesiological backgrounds represented in the church.

During this time, God has been exceedingly gracious, calling some to first-time faith, many to join us in daily worship and discipleship as God’s people, and all to a deeper and richer faith in the Lord Jesus.

Read on for a glimpse into our future, by God’s grace…

0 0 5 • I D E N T I T Y We live in a world in which we are defined by what we do. In contrast to this, we identify ourselves according what Jesus has done, and who He says we are. This identity is the launching pad for our vision. Everything

we do is birthed out of the identity that God has given us in Jesus.

GOD IS OUR FATHER >> We are God’s chosen people – His family – set apart to live in such a way that the world would know what He is like.

Through faith in Jesus we believe we are Children of God and brothers and sisters with one another.

- 1 John 3:1

JESUS IS OUR LORD >> We are servants of the Lord Jesus, our ruling and reigning King. One of the primary ways we serve Him is by serving others.

In the incarnation, King Jesus took on the posture of a servant and entered into human history. He gave his life so that others could experience salvation, peace and restoration.

- Mark 10:43-45

THE SPIRIT IS OUR SENDER >> God sent Jesus so all people, places and things could be restored to relationship with Him by the power of the Gospel.

Likewise, Jesus’ disciples were sent by the Spirit to restore all things to God through Jesus.

- Acts 1:8

WE ARE HIS FAMILY As God’s family we see it as our obligation to personally care for the needs of one another – both physically and spiritually.

As a loving family, we disciple, encourage, nurture and hold each other accountable to Gospel life together.

- Galatians 6:10

WE ARE HIS SERVANTS For us this means joyfully submitting to Jesus as Lord, to the leaders he has placed over us, and to each other as we also serve whomever God brings into our lives.

Jesus said, “I am among you as one who serves…”. All those who follow Jesus are called to likewise serve.

- Philippians 2:1-11

WE ARE HIS MISSIONARIES In the same way, we believe we are missionaries sent by God’s Spirit into our culture to restore all things to God through Jesus.

The Spirit sends us to share the Gospel of God’s redemption, reconciliation, and restoration.

- Matthew 28:18-20

LOVED FOR THE GLORY OF GOD In love, He chose us to be set-apart, lavished with grace and adopted into His family to the praise of His glory.

In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace.

- Ephesians 1:4-6

BOUGHT BY THE BLOOD OF JESUS Indebted to God because of our active rebellion, Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sin and ransom us for God.

Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.

- Revelation 5:9-14

SAVED FROM THE WRATH OF GOD God is right to be angry at sin and sinners. But because of Jesus’ death in our place, we have been saved from God’s righteous judgement.

Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.

- Romans 5:9

RAISED TO NEW LIFE IN CHRIST Because of Jesus’ resurrection, we are given new life spiritually now, as well as renewed physical bodies when Jesus returns.

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ.

- Ephesians 2:4-5

FREED FROM SLAVERY TO SIN Not only did Jesus pay our debt and take our punishment, He also frees us from slavery to sin, enabling us to live in freedom.

But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart… and, having been set free from sin, h a v e b e c o m e s l a v e s o f righteousness.

- Romans 6:17-18

REDEEMED FOR A LIFE OF SERVICE We are not merely saved from the penalty of sin, but saved into an active relationship with God which is evidenced by a life of service.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God…we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.

- Ephesians 2:8-10

THE CHURCH IS A SIGN AND INSTRUMENT OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD, A PEOPLE UNITED BY FAITH IN THE GOSPEL ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE CRUCIFIED AND RISEN KING JESUS. THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH IS TO GO INTO THE WORLD IN THE POWER O F T H E S P I R I T A N D M A K E D I S C I P L E S B Y PROCLAIMING THIS GOSPEL, CALLING PEOPLE TO RESPOND IN ONGOING REPENTANCE AND FAITH, AND DEMONSTRATING THE TRUTH AND POWER OF THE GOSPEL BY LIVING UNDER THE LORDSHIP OF CHRIST FOR THE GLORY OF GOD AND THE GOOD OF THE WORLD.

- TREVIN WAX

THE MISSION AND RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CHURCH INCLUDES BOTH THE PROCLAMATION OF THE GOSPEL AND ITS DEMONSTRATION. FROM JESUS, WE LEARN THE TRUTH IS TO BE PROCLAIMED WITH AUTHORITY AND LIVED WITH GRACE. THE CHURCH M U S T C O N S T A N T L Y E V A N G E L I S E , R E S P O N D LOVINGLY TO HUMAN NEEDS, AS WELL AS “SEEK THE WELFARE OF THE CITY” (JEREMIAH 29:7). BY LIVING OUT THE IMPLICATIONS OF THE GOSPEL, THE MISSIONAL CHURCH OFFERS A VERBAL DEFENCE AND A LIVING EXAMPLE OF ITS POWER.

0 0 9 • M I S S I O N Our mission shapes all that we do as a community: our ministries, our budget, our staffing, our goals - everything is guided and governed by

this God-given purpose.

CHRIST-CENTRED God created us for His glory. He crafted us to know Him, delight in Him, praise Him, and worship Him in every area of our lives.

I will say to the north, Give up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth, everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.

- Isaiah 43:6-7

This is God’s chief aim in all that He does. Indeed, God creates, calls, rescues, redeems, saves, restores, restrains and grants all to the end that He might be praised.

We believe that the vision that God wants us to be captivated by is a vision of every man, women and child orientating all of life around the glory of God in Jesus.

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honour and glory and blessing!

- Revelation 5:12

COMMUNITY-CENTRAL We believe that the instrument God wants to use to enable this Christ-centred life, is the local church community.

He gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

- Ephesians 4:11-13

We want to establish and build a community of believers who are committed to do the work of ministry so that everyone we engage with will seek to orientate their lives around Jesus.

This is a radical vision amid a culture of mere attendance and casual involvement. It requires mutual love,sacrif ice, care, consistency and authenticity.

Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

- 1 Peter 2:10

0 1 1 • VA LU E S Values function as the compass of our church. They underpin our vision and reveal what is most important to us. They aid us in setting goals and

strategies for ministry, and they help us discern the right course from the easy or obvious course of action.

GOSPEL-CENTRED WOLRDVIEW We are committed to preaching and teaching the Bible in a way that both honours the text and connects with everyday people. One of our passions is to see people engage with the storyline of the Bible in order to form a gospel-centred worldview that shapes how they live and engage with the culture around them.

GOSPEL-DRIVEN SERVICE We live in a non-committal culture, where you can turn up to church when you want and still keep all of your options open. That is not what our church is about. We follow a Saviour who calls us to a costly life and a sacrificial faith (Luke 14:25-33, Phil. 2). As Jesus’ disciples, we work to love His people, own the vision, develop deep relationships, and serve others.

GOSPEL-BASED MULTIPLICATION We view numerical church growth as something that God is pleased to do as we join Him in His work of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:11-21). We have a mission as a church to be one body, with each member reaching one person - because one person is enough, one person is important, and one person coming to repentance and faith is a miracle (Luke 15:1-10).

GOSPEL-SHAPED LEADERSHIP Jesus is our senior leader, we look to Him for guidance, example, and protection. Under Him, God appoints leaders to help shepherd the church. These are faithful, but flawed, men and women who are willing to lead God’s people through the peaks and valleys of the Christian life. Without exception, strong churches require strong leaders (2 Timothy 2:1-6).

GOSPEL-FORMED COMMUNITY We reject the trend of segregating homogenous communities of faith. We believe that the local church ought to reflect the generational, cultural and socioeconomic diversity of their context. We have witnessed how the gospel breaks down barriers that otherwise divide groups of people on superficial grounds. We are one body, one family, united in Christ.

0 1 3 • C O N N E C T I O N We are not so much looking for church ‘members’ as church ‘owners’. In

partnering with us in ministry you are electing, under Jesus, to take ownership of our church. Church owners don’t merely affiliate, approve

or align with the vision, they pray, lead, and fund the vision.

WE UPHOLD HISTORICAL CHRISTIANITY The tri-unity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit;

God’s loving creation of the u n i v e r s e , t h e c r e a t i o n o f humanity in His image, the value of creation sustained and ruled by God, the final resurrection of all people, and the renewal of all things at Christ’s return;

The universal sinfulness of humanity since the Fall, rendering mankind subject to God’s judgement;

The conception of Jesus by the Holy Spirit and His birth by the Virgin Mary;

God’s gracious provision of redemption from the guilt, penalty and power of sin only though the sacrificial death, as our representative and substitute, of Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God;

The bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, His ascension, heavenly reign, return, judgement, and glory;

The church as the people of God, the body and bride of Christ, and the temple of the Holy Spirit;

The call to ministry in the church and in the world, including the ministries of word and sacrament, evangelism and church planting, pastoral care, mutual ministry, and world mission;

The necessity of the work of the Holy Spirit to make the death of Christ effective in the individual sinner, granting him or her repentance towards God, and faith in Jesus Christ;

The indwelling, work and gifts of the Holy Spirit in believers and in the church;

The divine inspiration and infallibility of Holy Scripture as originally given and its supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.THE FIVE ‘SOLAS’ OF THE REFORMATION Sola Scriptura - Scripture alone, inspired by God, is the source of our faith and life.

Sola Gratia - Salvation is grounded in God's grace alone, not any human merit.

Sola Fide - Salvation comes through faith alone, not by any other means.

Solus Christus - Salvation is effected in Christ alone, not by any other work or saviour.

Soli Deo gloria - Salvation's purpose is for God's glory alone, not for any other end.

THE 39 ARTICLES OF RELIGION We affirm the Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion as foundational for authentic Anglican belief and practice and as correctives to doctrinal abuses.

GOSPEL-CENTERED THEOLOGY God is the initiator of Salvation and Jesus is the Hero. God doesn’t respond to us – we respond to God’s initiative and calling. He saves and secures us for salvation and we respond only because of and by his grace.

Jesus’ life, death, resurrection, ascension and sending of the Spirit are at the centre of our faith. It is through him, because of him and in him that we come to be God’s people, are transformed and, ultimately, restored.

CHARISMATIC PNEUMATOLOGY We believe the Holy Spirit is alive and active in regeneration, empowerment and ongoing filling for the purposes of God.

We believe all of the gifts of the Spirit are still available today, but not one of them in particular is required to give evidence of the baptism or filling of the Spirit.

ALREADY-NOT-YET ESCHATOLOGY We believe the Kingdom of God was inaugurated in Jesus’ first coming and will be consummated in his second coming. We live in the in-between where we can experience the reign of Jesus while longing for its completion as we also experience the reality that things are not yet fully as they will be in the new creation.

We acknowledge the variety of v i e w s w i t h i n i n a u g u r a t e d eschatology and allow for this variety within our church family.

HETEROGENEOUS ECCLESIOLOGY We believe that the local gathered church ought to reflect the generational, cultural and socioeconomic diversity of the context they are ministering in.

We also believe that the gospel breaks down barr iers that otherwise segregate groups of people on any superficial basis. As with the Jews and Gentiles of the first century, the Gospel takes segregated people and makes them one body, one family.

Thus, we desire to bring all ages and stages together as much as possible. We do not anticipate starting new congregations or churches that are designed for homogeneous people groups.

ORDERED EQUALITY IN SHARED MINISTRY We believe men and women are created in the image of God equally, yet with distinct roles in the family and church. Men and women are called to use their gifts fully in church ministry under the leadership of biblically qualified male pastors.

In the marriage relationship husbands and wives are called to display the Gospel. As such, husbands are called to sacrificially love their wives as the head of their home, while wives are called to respectfully submit to their husbands.

We have the great privilege of welcoming newcomers to our service every week. Everyone is always welcome! A typical Sunday morning service begins with 15-20 minutes of corporate singing. You might have expected us to say corporate “worship”, but we believe that everything we do when we gather as the body of Christ is worship.

That includes prayer, the public reading of Scripture, mutual encouragement and fellowship, celebration of the sacraments of Baptism and Communion, and the preaching of God’s Word. In f a c t , h e a r i n g G o d ’s W o r d proclaimed, meditating upon it in our hearts, and then living life in accordance with whatever it says, all comprise true worship.

There is freedom in the way people express their love for God and gratitude for all he has done. Some wil l s i t quietly and meditate. Most will stand and sing every song. Quite a few will raise their hands, while others will keep them at their side.

One of the leaders may employ liturgical elements in the service such as prayers of confession and repentance, declarations of faith, or readings from Scripture.

Depending on how the Spirit is leading us, there may be times of exuberant celebration as well as moments of somber reflection.

In any case, regardless of the mood or atmosphere of the service, our aim is to glorify God by enjoying him and all that he is for us in Jesus. We believe that true, biblical worship happens anywhere and anytime that the mind is filled with exalted thoughts about God, the heart is inflamed with love for God, and Jesus is treasured in our souls.

Every Sunday we celebrate the Lord’s Supper (or Communion or the Eucharist). You may partake of the Lord’s Supper alone, with family and friends, or with your Community Group.

Following the time of singing, much of the service is devoted to the preaching of God’s Word. We believe in the importance of ‘expositional preaching’, that is, the passionate explanation and relevant application of Scripture, verse by verse, book by book.

All of the sermons preached at Caroline Springs Anglican are available at soundcloud.com/carolinespringsanglican

At the close of our time together, we typically provide opportunity for people to receive prayer for whatever needs they may have. We believe in praying for both physical and emotional healing through the laying on of hands.

Pastoral staff, as well as other believers who have been trained in prayer ministry will be available to pray for you any time.

We are the body of Christ, created in the image of God who exists in community (Genesis 1:26,27). The Father, Son and Holy Spirit h a v e e t e r n a l l y e x i s t e d i n relationship with one another as one God in three persons (John 1). God is a relational being who created us as relational beings so that we could image Him (Genesis 1:26).

As a community this means that we are to reflect the glory of God and preach the gospel through our lives together. (Acts 2:42, Colossians 3:16)

This means: loving one another, forgiving one another as Christ forgave us, calling one another to confession and repentance for the purpose of reconciliation and calling one another to lives that glorify God (Hebrews 10:24-26, 2 Corinthians 5:18).

In short, community is key to our existence as a church.

COMMUNITY GROUPS Gathering weekly for fellowship and accountability, study and prayer, good times and tears – Community Groups are a great way to connect with people from Caroline Springs Anglican. Each week we study the passage that was preached on the Sunday before; discussing the issues and h o p e f u l l y g a i n i n g g rea t e r understanding.

It is a group of disciples who find their identity in Christ, who worship Jesus together, who care for one another and spur each other toward godliness.

What that looks like in practice will vary slightly from group to group. However, the basic purpose for each group is to meet at least once per week in order to grow in spiritual maturity, and in relationship with one another. Typically, Groups will eat together, study God’s word, pray, discuss, and ask questions.

We use a sermon-based teaching model. This model links our church's Community Groups ministry with the weekly sermon. Group members study the same topic or passage of Scripture that was covered in the sermon, hopefully delving deeper into areas not covered in detail by the preacher, and aiding each other in applying the text to daily life.

We intend to spend the next couple of years shaping our C o m m u n i t y G r o u p s i n t o gatherings that exist to be on mission together in our local context (see Goal 3, page 20).

KIDS MINISTRY The ultimate goal of all that we do in this ministry is to reach children and families with the gospel so that, by the grace of God, they will accept Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. And then to strengthen their knowledge through God's Word and support them to apply scripture in their lives.

Through our Sunday Children's Ministry we aim to see the children of the church grow in their love and knowledge of Jesus as their Saviour and Lord and become more like Him. To pray for our leaders, children and their families and invite the church to join us in praying for Children's Ministry.

MAINLY MUSIC ‘mainly music’ is a fun music group for parents or primary care givers to enjoy together with their young pre-school child.

Throughout the thirty minute session, children develop gross and fine motor skills, language, imagination, mathematical and pre-reading skills as well as socialise with others. Songs which tell about God are sung at each session. Props and musical instruments are provided and sessions are planned to extend children’s musical ability and appreciation. We’re not music teachers, but we’ve learned how

to bring out the best in most children. After the music session we have 45 minutes for our eat / play / chat time. Morning tea is provided for both your child and yourself and while the children play you have an opportunity to connect with others who are at the same life stage as yourself.

Through our ‘mainly music’ program each week we are committed to reaching out to the young families in our community providing a connection point for them both with other families, the church and ultimately to Jesus.

YOUTH MINISTRY Caroline Springs Anglican is c o m m i t t e d t o b u i l d i n g a community and culture that stands out as attractive to young people because it is filled with love and hope.

We seek an intergenerational culture where youth, young a d u l t s , m a r r i e d s a n d grandparents not only worship together, but build friendships and have conversations across age, cultural and financial divides.

The single most important aspect of our church mission is for people to make all of life all about Jesus, because that is what they are created for. We have an incredible vision of our youth standing out because they know who they are and whose they are.

PRAYING THE VISION. Try praying these bible-based prayers:

Jesus, you are worthy to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honour and glory and blessing, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed for God people from every tribe, language, people and nation. - Revelation 5:9-14

We trust in your Son as the powerful,loving saviour, head, and judge of His church, and your gospel as your power for salvation for all who believe. - Romans 1:16-17

We trust that you will provide all the gifts, time, energy and health for us to live for you and do the good works you have prepared for us to do. - Ephesians 2:8-10

We trust that you have placed us where you want us to serve you bless others. - Acts 17:26-27

LEADING THE VISION. As we seek to live the vision outlined in these pages, we will need strong men, women and children to lead the way.

We are seeking people who are prepared to move out of their comfort zone and take bold steps of faith that will have eternal significance.

If, in reading through this vision, you feel the Spirit of God convicting you that this vision is His will for our church, please listen to His voice and respond with action.

Respond by making time to sit down with other leaders. Ask questions, pray fervently, and talk about what it will look like for you to take up the call to live each day as a servant-leader in the family of God.FUNDING THE VISION. We commit to make every dollar count in funding the vision.

GOD WANTS US TO SEE THAT ALL OF LIFE, EVERY ASPECT OF IT, IS A GOOD GIFT FROM HIM. HE WANTS US TO FIND OUR HEARTS CRYING OUT “GOD IS SO GOOD!” IN THE MIDDLE OF EVERYDAY LIFE. HE WANTS US TO EAT, PLAY, CREATE, WORK, CELEBRATE, REST, AND RELATE TO ONE ANOTHER FOR HIS GLORY.

JESUS WAS SET APART FOR GOD IN THE WORLD, AND EVERYTHING HE DID WAS TO GLORIFY GOD. HE WAS HOLY, AND EVERY ASPECT OF HIS LIFE WAS HOLY BECAUSE HE DID IT UNTO GOD.

AND HE IS PRESENTLY DWELLING IN HIS PEOPLE BY HIS SPIRIT. THAT MEANS THE PERFECT FUTURE CAN BREAK INTO OUR PRESENT BROKENNESS. THE LIFE AND POWER OF JESUS TO LIVE A NEW LIFE IS AVAILABLE NOW.

- JEFF VANDERSTELT, SATURATE
