The town of Welaka kicked of its annual Christmas celebration this past Saturday. Beginning with the First Annual Welaka Winter 5K Walk/Run at 8 a.m. Christmas was in the air, literally, as local pilots preformed several fly overs to kick of the Christmas Parade, over the crowded parade route on County Road 309. The sounds of sirens, Christmas songs and shouts of “Merry Christmas” filled the streets as children scurried to pick up candy thrown by parade participants. After the parade, festivalgoers gathered at the Town Hall Pa- vilion to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus, and to receive toys donat- ed by Toys For Tots. The celebra- tion wound down that afternoon around 5 p.m. with the lighting of the town Christmas tree and end- ed at 6 p.m. on the St. Johns River with a lighted boat parade. Palatka – As the result of a joint investigation involving the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and the Palatka Police Department, a Palatka man has been arrested for two counts of armed robbery. The robberies occurred at the Kanga- roo Food Store located at 1205 State Road 19 and the Kangaroo Food Store on Crill Avenue in the West Gate Plaza on Friday, December 6. Clydven Terrance Jackson, 24, was iden- tified in the surveillance video obtained at the Crill Avenue location by family members, who saw the video on agen- cy Facebook pages. On December 10, Jackson was locat- ed and interviewed by detectives from the Putnam County Sher- iff’s Office and the Palatka Police Depart- ment. At the conclusion of the interview he was placed under arrest for the two robberies. He is currently being de- tained in the Putnam County Jail without the benefit of a bond. Investigators are cur- rently identifying the second individual in- volved in the robberies and an additional ar- rest is expected. This is still an active inves- tigation and additional information cannot be released at this time. Future releases will be provided when infor- mation becomes avail- able. Crescent City Police Department Needs Your Help

One Ugly BikeDaris Howard

Dear Editor:

Last Friday evening, we walked to the lake to watch the Boat Parade. There were around ten boats in the parade and they were decorated beau-tifully. If I had to pick a winner, it would be very hard to do. This parade was put on by the Yacht Club and they sure deserve thanks. I know it had to be hard work to do all that decorating. Thanks a bunch for the nice show!

One other thing is on my mind. Sunday evening, we were coming into town and it was dark. I was amazed at how pretty our small town looked. I guess you can tell I don’t get out much after dark. The little Christmas trees on the poles were all lit up. They showed up even more with all of the street lights on. Any one who drives through our town has to be impressed.

I think our city is getting better than ever!

Students at Middleton-Burney

Elementary School, in

Crescent City, were asked

the following question by 3rd Grade teacher

Tasha Newbold:

EyesEyesMartin, my colleague, said, “Your bike is so ugly, I want you to ride at

least 100 yards away from me so no one knows I know you.”“It’s not that ugly,” I said.“It is that ugly,” he replied. We were 20-years-old, living and working in New York, and bikes were

our only means of transportation. After my previous one was stolen, I bought an ugly girl’s three speed that was stuck in third gear. It only cost $6, it was never stolen, even when I didn’t lock it up, and, most important-ly, it always worked.

Sometimes trying to get it moving with it in third gear was a challenge. If I started from a full stop, I could hardly press the pedals. But I found out that if I ran alongside of it, and then jumped on, I would have enough momentum to get it moving more easily.

This embarrassed Martin even more, and I found that he did try to ride a good distance ahead of me. When we would end up being stopped at the same stoplight, intersection, or the like, and then be ready to start again, he would try to take off quickly so he could put some distance between us. He continued to tell me how ugly my bike was, and I continued to tell him it wasn’t that bad.

The first Sunday I rode it to church, I left it leaning against the fence, as usual. One of the members of the congregation came into the meeting we were attending. “I think I have just seen the ugliest bike in the world,” he said, “and it has been abandoned by the church fence.”

Without disclosing that it was mine, I asked, “Why do you think it was abandoned?”

“Well,” he replied, “I’m sure no one in their right mind would ride some-thing that ugly, and we are a church, so someone probably left it as a donation to charity.”

“That’s not a donation,” Martin told the man. “That’s Howard’s bike.”Later that week, Martin and I had a meeting with other young men and

young women our age. We arrived early, and Martin suggested that I park my bike on the back side of the building so no one would see it. I reluc-tantly agreed, and took it out back. I leaned it against the fence near where the dumpster was sitting.

Just before our meeting started, one of the other young men came in. “You wouldn’t believe what I saw out back,” he said. “It has to be the world’s ugliest bike. Someone put it by the dumpster. Apparently, they wanted to throw it away, but couldn’t get it up in, so I did.”

My heart started to pound. As I ran to save my bike, I heard Martin laughing as he called after me, “Howard, it is that ugly!”

I climbed into the dumpster and lifted my bike out. By the time I climbed back out myself, my clothes were less than sanitary. I dropped to the ground, turned around, and there was the whole group. Martin had led them out to see my bike.

“Howard, don’t tell me you ride that bike,” the guy that threw it away said.

“It’s not that ugly,” I replied.Martin nodded. “It is that ugly.”Later that week, Martin and I were out working. A little child, who was

about eight-years-old, came up to me. “Hey, Misser, did you buy dat bike or steal it?” he asked.

“I bought it,” I replied.“How much did you pay for it?”“I paid six bucks,” I told him.He shook his head. “Man, you need to go home and let yo’ mamma slap

you. You got ripped off.”Martin grinned and said, “It is that ugly.”

Letter to the EditorThe Great City I Live In

To all the wonderful folks in Crescent City:

Mrs. Claus and I actually wanted to stay in your precious little town. The hardest part of leaving was convincing our elves and reindeer to come back to the North Pole with us! I don’t think we’ve ever been in a more exciting and fun parade.

It was thrilling to see all the parents and children lining the streets and sidewalks, and that they then had enough energy left to come to the park and visit with us in person. How FUN you all were! I hope you enjoyed visiting us as much as we enjoyed visiting with everyone.

We were also tickled by our hosts, Mayor Joe Santa, Patrick Kennedy, and the enthusiastically helpful Crescent City employees. They introduced us to so many WONDERFUL PEOPLE!! The citizen-volunteers from the Crescent City Celebration Committee created the two day merriment side by side with your (also tireless) Woman’s Club.

These individuals impressed me most, because their work was, as mine is, a labor of pure love. As a group, these volunteers requested I not men-tion their names. They want, not credit for themselves, but to demonstrate how caring residents can expand the wonderful, distinctive heart and soul of Crescent City and your surrounding communities.

This was also true of the dancers, performers, musicians, vendors, church groups, artists, and owners of the horses who thrilled so many of you. The contributors are too numerous to mention (Irwin). Their love and genuine kindness is what happens when people bigheartedly gather together to bring joy to the lives of others.

That is what Christmas means here and all around the world. I hope each of you open your hearts to love and cherish one another. Mostly, I hope we will be invited back in 2014!!

Love to you all,

Santa and Mrs. Claus

Thank You For Inviting Us

Ladies Christmas GalaThe Women of Howe

Memorial Methodist Church presented their annual Christmas Gala Thursday, December 5, at 6 p.m., in the Fellow-ship Hall. Barbara Scholl beautifully decorated the room.

The Ladies in Har-mony, directed by Dee Goolsby and accompa-nied by Carol Stuart, were the evening’s en-tertainment. Rusty Bow-man and Sousan Wilson performed solos. Faith Handbells and Chimers also did a few numbers.

Martha Cowan served delicious refreshments, and the ladies of the church made for a most enjoyable evening.

The night wrapped up with the audience sing-ing “Silent Night,” which was accompanied by the Ladies in Harmony, the Faith Handbells and Chimers, Bowman, and Wilson.

Turn Your Lights OnPomona Park res-

idents: Turn your out-side Christmas lights on Thursday, December 19, by 7 p.m. The judging committee will be choos-ing the number one, two, and three sites for the winners. First place will win $100, second place $50, and third place $25, which will be presented later. The Beautification Committee is in charge of the judging.Congratulations Eleanor

At the State Master Gardeners Conference in Kissimmee, Eleanor Flood, of Lake Como, was presented with a 30-year award for her service in the Master Gardeners program.

Other awards were presented for years of service, but no others for 30 years. Different train-ing sessions took place during the conference.

Ellie has been our own Master Gardener since we moved here 30 years ago, and needed help in changing from Texas grass and plants to Flor-ida growth. Thanks Ellie for all your help through the years, from all of us!

Last MeetingThe Bass Capital Sams

#99 Camping Club closed its books. It finished out with a luncheon, and do-

nated all leftover funds to Operation Smile. The group met at the Lake Como Community Center for a farewell party.

Twenty-five or more members, spouses, and friends met to share memories, pictures, and camping tales. My hus-band, Nick, was Wagon Master for many years. We attended rallies, meetings, and quite a few blue grass festivals, mixed in with the meet-ings.

None of the original members are still alive, so maybe they are having their own camping club in heaven. God bless.Christmas in Our Area

The weekend of De-cember 6, 7, and 8, was very busy for Crescent City and the surround-ing area. There were ven-dors, booths, games for children, a boat parade, pony rides, which were very popular, and music at Eva Lyon Park Friday evening. Then Saturday included all the same events, with the addition of a parade down Sum-mit Street, and beautiful weather.

Sunday was the Cres-cent City Woman’s Club annual Tour of Homes. The refreshments at the Club House always draw raves. Vicky Strickland and her crew of workers were in charge. The trol-ley is a big hit with folks who don’t want to drive and try to find parking places.

The beautiful nativity scene and Alice McCoy’s decorative touches at the Presbyterian (Manse res-idence) were lovely.

The spiral staircase and lovely decorations were the talk of the view-ers. Joyce Johnston, from Jacksonville, took pictures of the upstairs to show her friend Cathy Grant, who did not want to tackle the stairs.

The Duke-Watson house was lovely. The view from the front is spectacular.

Mr. and Mrs. Claus (Bob and Deborah Spe-reno) showed off their beautifully decorat-ed porch while taking a break from the North

Pole. Santa even built his own wooden sleigh, which he and Mrs. Claus rode in at the parade.

The group stopped by and saw Allan Fraser’s train display. It was quite amazing.

The Church of Je-sus Christ of Latter-day Saints was a beautiful building. The sound of Branch Manager Darius Trunk’s wife Alicia’s love-ly voice singing Christ-mas carols could be heard.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the tour and the beautiful weather.

Mayor Joe Santa and wife Charlotte were very involved in the Christmas weekend. I’m sure Char-lotte’s dad and grand-dads (former mayors) would be very pleased to see her involved in mak-ing Crescent City a great place to live.

Park ElvesMegan and Brittany

Jones, great nieces of Di-ane Sykes, volunteered to work as park elves to help keep Eva Lyon Park clean during and after the festival. They also made and sold brace-lets at the Woman’s Club table, and donated the proceeds to the Crescent City Celebration Com-mittee. Thanks for the help!

Talent NeededThe Crescent City

Woman’s Club will hold their “Women in Music and Art” program on Sunday, January 12, 2014, at the Howe Me-morial Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Anyone with talent of any kind, from singing, poetry, painting, playing instru-ments, or comedy, please call Chairman Myra Lord at 386-559-3126 with your information.

S.J.’s StoryMy family asked me to

send them copies of the paper with S.J.’s story written by Travis Rob-erts, the Putnam County Courier Journal’s sports writer. Someone asked about donations, too. I’m sure if you sent those to the Putnam County Cou-rier Journal, c/o Travis Roberts, he would get them.

Men Who CookThe “Men Who Cook”

event will take place Sat-urday, December 21, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Eva Lyon Park.

This event has gar-nered much interest from men from Orlando to Jacksonville who wish to be a part of this fund-raiser for our girls. Many in our own community have committed, such as Mayor Joseph San-

ta, City Attorney Jay As-bury, City Manager Pat-rick Kennedy, Crescent Fire Chief Jason High-fill and his crew, Police Chief Robert Johnson, Boyz 2 Men Group, and so many more.

With your support and Winn-Dixie and their Cu-linary Chef from Jack-sonville as our prominent sponsor and participant, we should have much success. We also have a member of our communi-ty Julian Ferguson who has volunteered to sup-ply music and entertain-ment. If you are a father, uncle, brother, grandfa-ther, you are welcome to participate in this ex-citing event. Needless to say, we are very excited and appreciative.

The sole purpose of this event is to bring the com-munity together to help raise funds for young The Rite of Passage Ini-tiative (ROPI) girls to pur-chase their gowns for the Red & White Winter Ball

planned for Saturday, January 18, 2014.

ROPI Girls will be es-corted to the ball by their fathers, brothers, uncles and grandfathers. Some have requested to be es-corted by the Boys 2 Men members. Just imag-ine the impact this will have on our young girls. This is what they need and this is something we should do. So come out and support them.

This is an ideal time to brush up or awaken your culinary skills. We promise you a time filled with fun and lots of ex-citing dishes prepared by your fellow men. Tick-ets are $15 in advance and $20 at the park. The price includes a sam-pling of all the various foods being served. December 21, 1988 – Outlying Areas Hit 25 De-grees As Cold Snap Blows In - Fern growers ran their pumps and sprinklers about 18 hours over Satur-day and Sunday nights in an effort to ward off damage from the winter’s first hard freeze. South Putnam low temperatures ranged from 25 to 33 degrees, depend-ing on location, on both nights. Winds were absent, contributing to heavy coatings of frost.

December 17, 1937 – Building Program Has Begun In Park - The week the building program for another tennis court, croquette courts and shuffle board was officially started under the direction of Clayton Frank, Chairman of the Committee from the Chamber of Commerce sponsoring the improvements in Eva Lyon Park.

December 19, 1963 – Two Armed Men Hold Up Handi Way Market - Two armed men with their faces hidden by stockings pulled over their heads, walked into Millers’ Handi Way store on Summit Street at about 9:45 Sunday evening, demanded cash, and made away with between $500 and $600 in currency and silver. They made their getaway in a car parked a block or so away, and so far police have been unable to locate them.

10 years agoDecember 17, 2003 – Police Department Updates Its Fleet - The Crescent City Police Department re-cently received three brand new vehicles. This year’s budget requested three new police vehicles on a lease purchase. The city receives all three cars now and will be paying for one vehicle each year for the next three years.

Courier Journal and other local news sources.

5 years agoDecember 17, 2008 – City Gets A New Manager – After Marcus Collins submitted his resignation as city manager for Crescent City, speculation about who would fill the position immediately began. The city commission wasted no time appointed Assistant City Manager Patrick Kennedy to the post. Kennedy was mildly surprised at the appointment. With personnel, he’d like to add staff, although not another assistant city manager. The commission wants him to explore the idea of an engineer. The proposed community center is a priority for Kennedy.

Palatka – The Putnam County Board of County Commis-sioners read a Nation-al Hospice and Pallia-tive Care Proclamation into the meeting min-utes of November 12, to assist Haven Hos-pice in reaching out to Putnam County cit-izens to raise aware-ness of end-of-life care.

County Commission-er Nancy Harris (Dis-trict One) presented the proclamation at the Putnam County Board of County Com-missioners office and Commissioner Walton Pellicer (District Five) read the proclamation.

Haven Hospice Ad-ministrator Deborah Strickland, Patient Care Manager Dora Edwards and Volun-teer Coordinator Becky Slobodian accepted the presentation of the

proclamation on be-half of Haven Hospice. Commissioner Harris also recognized Becky Slobodian for being voted Putnam County Volunteer of the Year in 2012 and for her con-tributions to the com-munity

Haven Hospice reaches out to Putnam County and the sur-rounding communities on a consistent basis to raise awareness for end-of-life care; how-ever, during National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, Haven seeks to amplify these efforts. The proclama-tion celebrates and af-firms local government commitment to hospice during November’s Na-tional Hospice Pallia-tive Care Month. This proclamation is based on the document is-sued by the Nation-al Hospice and Pallia-tive Care Organization (NHPCO).

Normally, I would be writing something like, “Ryne Beasley fad-ed back in the pocket and fires one across the goal line to Tim-my Rogers.” Or I might be telling you how a group started a soccer league, but not today. Today I would like to set the record straight on five e-mails that I received last week.

It seems that I am one sided when it comes to North and South Putnam County, well this is according

to the e-mails that I re-ceived, and two wom-en who cornered me in Wal-Mart Saturday morning.

Some of this has to do with the soccer tournament that was played last weekend and how these parents don’t think it was fair. Not only do these par-ents think this wasn’t a fair tournament, but this group of parents thinks I only cover South Putnam Coun-ty, because I live on the other side of the bridge. Let me address these two issues right now.

First of all, I was cov-ering the soccer game in Palatka last week-end, but if you noticed, I wasn’t keeping track of the scores. I was there to watch a group of kids from both sides of Putnam County en-joy a day of competi-tion and to watch them have fun.

Secondly, I did not see any cheating going on. The referees were form Palatka, and I thought they did an outstanding job on calling the games. If you got upset because your child’s team lost, well that’s understand-

able. Hey we all want our kids to win, but to stand in a public place and complain in front of your children is just plain wrong! Shame on you!

So why don’t I cov-er any sporting events in Palatka? Well, that’s any easy one to an-swer. No one ever calls to let me know what’s going on. I would love to cover the sporting events in Palatka. So, if you have an event that you want covered, all you have to do is call the Putnam County Courier Journal at 386-698-1644 and ask.

Sometimes, in life we do some crazy things! Over the past few weeks, I have been tell-ing you about a young man who has lost part of his foot and his calf muscle in a lawn mow-er accident six years ago. Last week, I told you about a “villain” who is trying to make sure S.J.’s life is to-tally ruined by having him thrown off a piece of property he doesn’t even own.

I only have one more article after this one, and I hope that in the process you can help me get the word out about S.J. so that we can get him the help he needs so badly.

About two weeks ago, I was on my way to cover the basketball game at the high school when my phone rang. Naturally, I picked up the phone and noticed that the call was from S.J.’s mother’s house. I had talked to S.J.’s mother that morn-

ing, and I knew she was taking her husband to Jacksonville that afternoon because he has cancer.

I thought maybe some-thing had hap-pened to S.J., so I answered the phone. “Hello,” I said, expecting to hear Mary’s voice on the oth-er end, but to my surprise it was S.J.

He said, “Hi Mr. Travis.”

I replied, “How are you S.J.?”

He said, “Not so good. I’m in a lot of pain today and I don’t think I can take it anymore!”

Have you ever talk-ed to someone and got that gut feeling they were about to do something really stu-pid? Well that was the feeling I had at that very moment so I said, “S.J., why are you call-ing me?”

S.J. replied, “Mr. Travis, do you think I will get in trouble if I cut my foot off with an electric saw?”

By the tone in his voice I knew S.J. was getting ready to cut off his foot. I knew that he was serious when he

said, “I was sitting in my tent thinking that if I cut my foot off then the paramedics would come and rush me to the hospital and the doctors could give me an artificial foot, so I won’t have to deal with all this pain anymore. I walked to my mother’s house and I’m in the garage. I’ve got a piece of an old shirt wrapped around my leg, and I have it tied real tight so that it will stop the bleeding. Do you think I will get in trouble with the police?”

Holy cow! I knew that if I said the wrong thing it was going to be disaster, so I said, “Yes,

you will! Look S.J., just don’t do anything till I get there, ok!”

S.J. replied, “I don’t want to get you into any trouble, but may-be you can call the paramedics for me in case I pass out.” At this point I knew I had to get there fast.

“S.J., I want you to take a deep breath and relax, I’m on my way out there, and I swear if you cut your foot off I will never talk to you again!”

S.J. said, “Ok I’ll wait,” then the

December 18, 2013 COURIER JOURNAL Section B

It is a fact that most changes in the head foot-ball position, of at least the largest schools, start with the discontent among the alumni, and it soon spreads to the athletic director, president, and so on. The end finally comes fairly soon thereafter. Sometimes there is a delay, but for the most part, once the process starts, it won’t cease until the incumbent is ousted.

This is one of the hazards of being a head coach of a FBS school, but it applies to others as well. The difference comes with the publicity connected with major football programs.

So after the weird circumstances surrounding the departure of Urban Meyer from Florida, here comes the resignation of Mack Brown, head hon-cho at U of Texas in Austin. Meyer’s departure has to be unique in the annals of football history, while Brown’s is somewhat more conventional, a la Tex-as.

I’ve never heard of a coach (Meyer) who initially resigned because of a physical problem, then de-cided to come back with the commitment to del-egate more authority to his staff. This meant he took a considerable amount of pressure of run-ning a high-powered football team off his back. I believe Meyer went on to coach one more year be-fore calling it quits, and we know what happened after that.

After a year as a football “talking head,” he took a football job with far less pressure. Yeah, right. Head man at Ohio State. This whole story has al-ways puzzled me, but now I have figured it out.

His wife did not like Gainesville, and being a native Ohioan, wanted to get back to her home state. As luck would have it, Jim Tressel ran into problems at OSU, and good ol’ Meyer reluctantly moved to Columbus. The Buckeyes lost to Michi-gan State last Saturday and I thought, “Here we go again. I hope his health holds up after that loss.”

Match that tale with Brown’s resignation at Tex-as. Brown came from North Carolina 16 years ago, and built a record of wins, second only to Dar-ryl Royal at Austin. He had a forgettable record in 2012, failing to go to a bowl, but then rallied the troops to an 8-4 record this year. Only one of those wins being shellacking of Oklahoma.

You would think this would take him off the hot seat, but with the press fanning the flames, the Board of Regents (or whatever the board’s title is) and the Athletic Director already decided to give him a chance to resign effective after whatever bowl game in which the team participates.

It does appear that this was way more painful for Brown than what has surfaced because he had to wait for all the platitudes coming from the dias behind which the board chair stood at the football banquet, and which sounded the end of his stay at Texas.

I have never been a big Brown booster, partic-ularly because he coached at North Carolina pri-or to abruptly leaving for Austin, but more about his manner of using the time-worn phrases like, “We’ve got a bunch of dedicated young men..” and on and on. However, I think he was treated rather roughly for the overall record he had over those 16 years.

If you don’t know it already, the University of Texas is probably one of the richest of all schools of higher education. It owns vast oil fields in the southwest, among other assets, so it will be able to pull in almost anyone it wants to head the pro-gram, because money is no problem. Rumor has it that they coveted Nick Sabin a month ago and, in fact, someone reported that Sabin’s wife was house hunting in Austin. So Alabama put that all to rest with an extension of his contract and a puny ol’ 7.1 million buck for six years, or some-thing like that.

Looks like Jimbo Fisher is on the short list at Texas. Do you think he would jump at an 8 million per annum offer? I think he just might do that.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I will be back in 2014, God willing. I’ll leave with a bowl prediction that Auburn will upset FSU 42-40, and Duke will prevail over Texas A&M 28-27.

The contest seeks photographs of the nature and wildlife of Putnam County. phone went dead.I made the 30 minute

drive in 16 minutes flat, but let me tell you this, I had all kinds of thoughts running through my head for that 16 minutes. Thoughts like, will I find him in a pool of blood? Do I call the police? If I call the police, then they will lock him up. If I don’t, and he bleeds to death, then it’s all my fault.

With my heart about to pound out of my chest I pulled up in front of the house. To my relief S.J. was sitting inside the ga-rage on the floor with the door half way up. The first thing I saw was no blood! S.J. was sitting there with this make shift tourniquet wrapped around his thigh and the skill saw sitting next to him plugged into an extension cord.

I kicked the saw across the floor and said, “Are you crazy? What were you thinking? You’re just go-ing to cut your foot off? Then what, lay here and bleed to death? What if the paramedics couldn’t find the house?”

S.J. said, “That’s why I called you, I knew you wouldn’t let me die. You’re my friend, and I knew you would tell them where I was at. I’m not crazy Mr. Travis, I’m just tired of living in pain. I want to be able to walk like normal people, and I know that if I cut my foot off, they will give me a fake foot and I will be able to walk again.”

As I sat there on the floor with S.J., he began to cry. All I could do at that point was to put my arm around him and make a promise that I hope I can keep. I promised S.J. that I will do everything that I can to get him into see a doctor and maybe some-how get his foot, fixed but on the one condition that he never tries anything like that again.

S.J. doesn’t get the newspaper, and he has no Internet, so he can’t see that there are people who want to help him, he can’t see the hundreds of emails from people I get whose hearts bleed for him like mine.

What S.J. didn’t know was I had set him up an appointment with my family doctor in Welaka, who agreed to see him and that the Christian service center in Palatka had agreed to pay for his antibiotics. After I told S.J. the good news his spirits improved and he got a big smile on his face.

The next morning, I picked S.J. up and took him to my doctor who looked at his foot. I could see in the doctor’s eyes that it wasn’t good. The piece of skin that was tak-en from S.J.’s thigh six years ago is a different type of skin than the bot-tom of his foot; it is much softer and is starting to tear away from the rest of his foot. If this hap-pens, and S.J is in the woods and unable to call for help, then he will more than likely bleed to death.

Over the past five and a half years, S.J.’s mother has been writing to the Social Security office, as well as to several congress people. The Social Securi-ty still hasn’t approved his disability or his Medicaid. Not only has his Medic-aid not been approved, it’s flat out been rejected.

A lot of letters have been written to our con-gress people, and their replies all say the same thing, “We will look into it and get back with you.” For five years? Give me a break. Next week, I will be giving you the names of some of these people in hopes that we can all con-tact them and help S.J. get approved for the ben-efits that some get for no reason at all.

I was able to take S.J. out of the woods this past weekend and let him meet a couple of you that have donated him some things, like a sleeping bag, canned goods, and a few basic items. I want to thank you guys for help-ing him out, but S.J. has a long way to go.

Why are we so intrigued with S.J and his story? Maybe it’s because we all have a little S.J. in us. Maybe we know that in any given moment, we could be S.J. Maybe it’s the fact that he is a member of our communi-

ty or maybe it’s just that 99% of us have two basic things in common, and that is compassion and love.

S.J. is not crazy; he’s just in more pain than most of us will ever expe-rience in our lifetime. To-night, S.J. sleeps in a tent while we sleep in our nice warm beds. His concerns aren’t that he will wake up when the alarm clock goes off. His fears are, “will this chunk of skin tear off tomorrow and leave me bleeding to death in the woods alone?”

Next week will be the last article on S.J., unless you guys want to hear more on his story. I want to leave you with some-thing S.J. said to me be-fore I left that night he was going to cut off his foot.

“Mr. Travis, sometimes I wish they would have let me die the day my foot got cut in half, but I think God has a purpose for me. You know, I’m glad he let it happen to me instead of someone else. It’s re-ally not so bad living in the woods. The rats and bugs are not out to kill me. Most people never get to see how rats and bugs live and how they have to survive. I’m just grate-ful to be alive. When the rats and bugs eat my food I don’t get mad because they need to eat too so I help them out.”

As I lay in my bed that evening, wondering if S.J. would make it through the night, I couldn’t help hearing his words and think of how great this world would be if we could all have that same outlook on life for our brothers, sisters, neighbors, and even the people we don’t know.

This coming Saturday, I will be bringing S.J. to Crescent City, so you can meet him and see what myself and others have seen. I will announce the location on the Putnam County Courier Journal Facebook page before Friday. We are trying to find a location this week so please bear with us. I want to thank you for reading S.J.’s story and hopefully we can help this young man.
