WELCOME TO THE MOSAIC’S FESTIVAL OF ART!

This has been a massive project and is the first time that we have attempted a production of

this scale encompassing many art forms covering theatre, multi-media, dance, painting,

music and sculpture. It has been a dream of ours for a long time as it provides an excellent

opportunity for people with disabilities to participate on an equal footing with the broader

art community in showcasing their works.

In our experience, people living with a disability continually demonstrate their ability to

contribute to the art world from a refreshingly honest and creatively pure perspective.

These attributes also lead to the production of works of a very high quality, across multiple

mediums.

We are understandably very proud of what has been achieved and we hope that you will

also thoroughly enjoy this experience. We are very pleased and thankful that we have the

use of the fantastic facilities at the Moonah Arts Centre as well as the State Cinema to host

this event.

Mosaic Festival of Art is looking to the future of art for those living with a disability and are

seeking to partner with other organisations, art venues and theatre companies to ensure

our artists have the opportunities to be challenged and grow in their chosen media .

The festival’s theme is dedicated to the expression of the physical experience of not just

living with a disability but living as a human being in this world generally. Within it, the

participants use many different art practices to share their stories, desires, hopes and

dreams; they create wondrous worlds and invite you to get lost in the beauty of uncertainty.

It is Mosaic’s hope that this festival could become a regular fixture in the Tasmanian art

calendar.

ART EXHIBITION

NOT KNOWING. ACCEPTING AMBIGUITY. Mosaic presents: Not Knowing; Accepting Ambiguity an exhibition of artworks that are

representations of the body by artists whose actual bodies and perceptions of the world

may not align with the norm. They are ambiguous because they may portray images of

sexuality, dark, emotions or twisted forms that require just your acceptance of their

existence ; not knowing if those representations are filled with desire or childlike

playfulness, are solely decorative or a visceral statement of being.

“Lend your ears to music, open your eyes to painting, and... stop thinking! Just ask yourself

whether the work has enabled you to 'walk about' into a hitherto unknown world. If the

answer is yes, what more do you want? “ Wassily Kandinsky

The exhibition is comprised of group projects and works made by individual artists in several

different mediums including photography, ceramics, painting, sculpture and multi-media.

EXPLORING. CHAOS AND CREATION Every beginning has an earlier beginning, and that beginning has an infinite number of beginnings. Language tries to deal with the mystery. We reach for poetry and symbols to help us in our need to know, to understand creation, but they too, fall short. Before language, we used sound; we moved with its mystery to explore and communicate the rich terrain of our inner world. Through the beauty of sound, we can sense the primacy of creation from nothing, from chaos, or both. Though, in the end, we’re still left...not knowing; accepting the ambiguity of life’s mystery. Mosaic’s contemporary ensembles, Scrap Metal Dogs and Silver Space present their journey, Exploring: Chaos and Creation. Mick Lowenstein, AJ Webberley, Grant Pearson, Jonathan Murphy, Christian DeLa Cruz, Luke Campbell, Charlie Smith, William Webster, David Montgomery, Rodrigo Diaz-Icasuriaga and Steve Young create a rich improvised tapestry of sound and movement; a journey through the power and mystery of creation.

MAC Doors and licensed bar open from 6:30 prior to event Tickets can be purchased directly from Mosaic at 31 Tower Rd, New Town M-F 9-5. Contact 6244 9444. Tickets available at the door unless sold-out prior to event .

Michael Lowenstein, aka “Mick”, has been working with Mosaic as a tutor and filmmaker

for 8 years. Over the years Mick has worked with Mosaic’s My Community participants to

produce numerous theatre performances and films. The Mosaic Festival of Art is a

celebration of the intense work that participants within the Create Stream of My

Community have produced throughout 2016.

Mick has produced 3 exquisite and ambitious events that spurred us on to showcase them

in our inaugural Mosaic Festival of Art. As Creative Director for the

festival, Mick has inspired our participants to aim high, and excel in drawing forth their

natural skill, ability and talent on screen and stage.

Mick tutors the Mosaic Core Ensemble, Centrestage, which has produced Transcendence.

Darkness into Light, the Moonah Arts Centre multi- art form theatre performance on

Friday 18th November 7:30pm. Mick has engaged Mosaic’s Puppetry Crew to provide a

unique set, and Camera Crew with supporting video as well as Mosaic’s musical groups,

Songbirds and Freestyling Groove, to provide an audio soundscape for the evening’s

performance

Mick and Centrestage have also produced a film entitled, Outnumbered, an original

adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet uniquely set as a Western in outer space, and spiced

with a steampunk flavour. A combination of live action and CGI elements are used to

create the deep space world of "Westinore." Outnumbered will have a “Hollywood-Style”

premiere at the State Cinema on Thursday 24th November at 6pm.

Mick has developed the closing event for the Mosaic Festival, a musical presentation,

entitled, Exploring. Chaos and Creation on Saturday 26th November 7:30pm. The

performance will engage Mosaic’s mixed ability musical groups who have performed at

MONA and the Art From Trash Exhibition openings; the Scrap Metal Dogs and Silver

Space. They will create an improvised journey, a sound exploration enhanced by

movement and lighting that engages the overarching themes of the Festival Exhibition and

Performances: Not Knowing. Accepting Ambiguity. Transcendence. Darkness into Light.

Chaos and Creation .

A special thanks to Mick for all the dedicated hard work with Mosaic for this festival to be

realised, and for all the years of work he’s given to Mosaic. Here’s to another 8 years.

ABOUT CREATE

Create is the arts branch of Mosaic’s My Community area. It is a diverse, dynamic, ever

-changing area that seeks to engage its participants in fun, creative and challenging

ways. It covers three distinct areas of the arts: visual arts, multimedia and

performance. Within these areas we cover many different practices.

It is a guiding principle of the Create team to support and grow our participants ideas

and projects within the different groups, creating the possibility of collaboration

between the different arts programs, across the whole organisation and ultimately

with external mixed ability groups.

It is our mission to support participants through their individual creative process in a

safe and encouraging environment and to aim for a seamless inclusion of its artists

and their artwork into the wider local and national arts community.
