January – Scottish Schools at Edinburgh University Twenty-one lifters from five clubs took part in this event, which was held at the Edinburgh University
sports complex in Holyrood road. There was some very good lifting from these young competitors, with
their ages ranging from 9 to 16 years old. Gladiator clubs Charley Craig and Zoe Davidson from
Pitlochry, both achieved totals higher than Scottish senior qualifying. The best performances among the
male lifters were from the Kilmarnock club, with Ryan Byrne, Jamie Byrne and Peter Baird all putting
in very high quality totals, and guest lifter Kieran McGarrity lifting the highest total.

Twenty-three lifters from seven clubs took part in this event, which was hosted by the Glasgow City
Barbell club, and organised by John McEwan. There was some very good performances among the male
lifters with Jim Ferguson, John McEwan and John McNiven all totalling more than 300 S.M.M. points,
which saw Jim Ferguson narrowly beat John McEwan for the best lifter prize. Amanda Craig from the
Gladiator club was the best female lifter with Langcroft’s Jean McConville second. This was Jean’s first
competition for a year, and she was advised to only do two lifts on medical grounds.

March – British Schools at Oldbury College, Birmingham
Match Report By Alex Phillips – Eighteen lifters from the City Barbell, Gladiator, Kilmarnock, and
Pitlochry clubs represented Scotland in this competition with fifteen winning gold, two winning silver
and one bronze. This was yet another very successful British competition for our lifters, and what is very
encouraging is that we had four clubs entering lifters, and all of them coming back with British titles.
Also most of those titles were won quite convincingly from their nearest opposition. However the best
lifter of the day was undoubtedly Rebecca Tiler from Mytholmroyd, who at the age of 14 set a handful of
new British records all the way up to junior level. Rebecca weighing just over 63kg snatched 78kg and
jerked 102kg for a 180kg total, and is surely going to be a name we are going to hear a lot about in the
future.

31st March – Scottish Junior & U-23’s at Kilmarnock, Ayrshire
Eight female and twenty-five male lifters took part in this well run event at the
Kilmarnock weightlifting club premises. Among the female lifters there were good
performances from Charley Craig of the Gladiator club and Pitlochry’s Zoe Davidson, but
the best performance, was undoubtedly that of home favourite Sophie Smyth, who set a
new Scottish U-23 and junior jerk record, with her 81kg effort.
There were many good performances from the male lifters, but the three that stood out
were Kilmarnock members Jordon Haydon and Dale Cree, as well as Zach Courtney from
Edinburgh. Jordon set a new Scottish junior record with his 115kg snatch, while Zach set
new Scottish U-23 and junior records with his 125kg snatch, on his way to winning the
best junior lifter award. And Dale totalled the highest number of Sinclair points, on his
way to winning the best U-23 lifter award.

April – Scottish Open at Crossfit Glasgow Spartans WLC
Fifty-two lifters competed at this event, 18 female and 34 male, held for the second time in the Crossfit
Gym in Glasgow. With the Commonwealth Games just over a year away, many of the Scottish squad
were in action. As usual, most of the classes were won by lifters from the Gladiator and Kilmarnock
clubs, including both best lifter awards, which were Georgi Black (best female) and Peter Kirkbride (best
male). Colette Will from the Gladiator club set a new Scottish senior and U-23 clean and jerk, for the
53kg class with her 74kg effort. Edinburgh’s Zach Courtney set new Scottish Junior snatch, jerk and total
records in the 94 kg class, with his 122kg snatch and 148kg clean & jerk and 270kg total.

June – British Juniors & Under-23’s at Scotstoun, Glasgow
Scotland were represented by 15 lifters at this competition, with six of them winning British titles, five
silvers and two bronze medals, so yet again another very successful British championships for our lifters.
The competition was well run by John McEwan and the Glasgow City Barbell club. There were many
good performances from our lifters, with many of our Commonwealth Games hopefuls in action. The
highlights among the female lifters were Colette Will setting new Scottish senior and U-23 snatch records
for the 48kg class with her 56kg effort and Sophie Smyth totalling 144kg just 2kg short of the Games
qualifying. Among the male lifters the highlight was Zach Courtney’s 126kg snatch setting new Scottish
junior and U-23 records for the 105kg class.
