Inform and prepare owners
for all expectations
including the treatment
timescale, level and rate
of weight loss, cost,
possible side-effects, time
commitment and potential
pitfalls such as the need
for behavioural changes
in other family members
Draw up an individual
management
plan based on an
appropriate mix of
diet, behavioural
change (exercise) and
medical treatment
A pe rmanent change
in owner attitude/
behaviour is required
to avoid weight
rebound. Visits every
2-4 weeks should
continue until it is
clear that weight isbeing maintained
successfully.If medical
treatment was used,
owners should be
aware that a sudden
increase in appetite
may occur when
treatment is stopped
Once weight is stable,
repeat visits may be
extended to once every
3-6 months
