    Inform and prepare owners

    for all expectations

    including the treatment

    timescale, level and rate

    of weight loss, cost,

    possible side-effects, time

    commitment and potential

    pitfalls such as the need

    for behavioural changes

    in other family members

    Draw up an individual

    management

    plan based on an

    appropriate mix of

    diet, behavioural

    change (exercise) and

    medical treatment

    A pe rmanent change

    in owner attitude/

    behaviour is required

    to avoid weight

    rebound. Visits every

    2-4 weeks should

    continue until it is

    clear that weight isbeing maintained

    successfully.If medical

    treatment was used,

    owners should be

    aware that a sudden

    increase in appetite

    may occur when

    treatment is stopped

    Once weight is stable,

    repeat visits may be

    extended to once every

    3-6 months
