FROM THE PRINCIPAL Welcome back to Hanwood Public School and to the year 2020! The students had a great start to the school year yesterday. Everyone was settled and commenced learning programs. I visited every class and was very pleased with what teachers planned for their students. We will be holding whole Stage Meetings in Week 3 so parents have the opportunity to see what students will be studying this term and to ask any questions they may have. A letter wil lbe sent home as soon as this has been organised. We will endeavour to hold these meetings after school and over a 2 day period so parents with children in different classes can attend the relevant sessions. We will continue with our very successful Breakfast Club program this year. It is held every Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00 am in the staffroom. All students are welcome to attend. We wouldnt be able to run this program without the continued support from Meals On Wheels and family contributions. HPS SWIMMING CARNIVAL

School Swimming Carnival- Our 2020 Swimming Carnival is in Week 3, Tuesday 11th February, at the Griffith Aquatic Centre. The carnival is compulsory for all children from years 3 – 6. Children in Year 2 who are turning 8 this year (born 2011) and can confidently swim 50 metres (2 laps of the main pool) may also attend. Please do not send your Year 2 children if they are unable to confidently swim 2 laps of the main pool (50 metres) without stopping. The students will be travelling to the pool and back by bus, at a cost of $8 per student, leaving at school at 9:30am and returning by approximately 2.30pm. Students will be wearing wrist bands on the day to signify which events they will be participating in. Children wearing blue wrist bands must swim in their 50 metre freestyle event and then can choose between 50 metres or 25 metres for each of the other strokes – however they cannot swim 25 metres and 50 metres for the same stroke. Children wearing yellow wrist bands will swim all their events as 25 metre events. Children wearing red wrist bands must swim in the novelty events only. Children can dress in house colours, however we ask that no crepe paper and coloured zinc be brought to the pool due to the potential of dye in the water. Bradman House is Green, Thorpe House is Blue and Fraser is Yellow. Please ensure your child comes with a hat, shirt, sunscreen and towel. Most of the carnival is indoors, however there is access to an outdoor area. Children who have asthma must bring their own puffer. HPS will also provide a first aid kit. We will need parent volunteers to help out on the day, mainly working as timekeepers. If you can assist please fill out the permission note or notify the ladies in the school office. Your assistance is greatly appreciated as we do not have enough staff to fulfil all necessary roles to run a carnival. The carnival will officially begin at approximately 10am.
