TP: Readers monitor for meaning by envisioning and predicting what the text will be about
Orient yourself to the text
Read the directions to figure out the genre. Dont forget the italics.
Skim and scan
Think of genre characteristics
Literary: Character, setting, problem, solution, theme
Informational: Main Idea, Details, Authors craft, Text Structure
Ask yourself: What do you expect to learn from this text?
Draw chunking/stop and think lines.
Read to get the gist/find out what the whole passage is about.
Stop to think after each chunk. After each chunk tell yourself about what you just read and what you are thinking.
SECOND READ
When we closely do the 2nd read of any passage you need to read with a lens and annotate in the margins and/or underline words or phrases.
Before reading
Think about the lens for your 2nd read.
During reading
Stop at each chunk of the text to tell yourself what you just read.
Underlining (1 word or 2-3 word phrases.
