Dear friends,

Every time Catholic Schools Week (next week) comes around, I find myself thanking God that all my years as a pastor have been spent in parishes with schools.

Catholic schools are a highly effective evangelization process that brings together parents, children and motivated staff --- all for young people at the most vulnerable and formative time of their lives.

Sacred Heart School, over its 100+ years, has played an essential role in the spiritual formation of literally thousands of locals. Think what Salinas might be like without these people!

You are most welcome to attend the Mass of thanksgiving for our school next Sunday at 11 AM. Afterwards, we’ll have an open gathering with teachers in Cislini Youth Center, and classroom tours available. You can see the latest SMART Interactive white boards, and hear about special initiatives to promote Catholic identity and spirituality among our young.

Queridos amigos, Cada vez durante la Semana de las Escuelas Católicas (la próxima se-ana) llega, me encuentro dando gracias a Dios de que todos mis años como pastor se han pasado en parroquias con escuelas. Las escuelas católicas son un proceso de evangelización muy eficaz que reúne a padres, niños y personal motivado --- todo para los jóvenes en el momento más vulnerable y formativo de sus vidas. La escuela del Sagrado Corazón, durante sus 100+ años, ha jugado un papel esencial en la formación espiritual de miles de jóvenes. ¡Piensa como Salinas podría estar sin esta gente! Usted está cordialmente invitado a asistir a la Misa de acción de gracias para nuestra escuela el próximo domingo a las 11 AM. THE QUEEN OF HEAVEN CEMETERY Holds a Mass in memory of the faithful departed on the first Saturday of each month at 10:00 AM. Priests of Sacred Heart and Madonna del Sasso take turns to celebrate this Mass. Sacred Heart’s turn will be on February 5. For more info, please call 449-5890.

NIGHT WATCH FOR LIFE AND PEACE - You may be asking yourself, “What can I do to help bring an end to the violence in our community?” In addition to cooperating with law enforcement, you can pray! You are invited to participate in a “Night Watch” at Madonna del Sasso, beginning with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 7 PM on February 4th and ending with 8:15 AM Mass on February 5th. This is an all night prayer vigil for an end to the continuing deadly violence in our com-munity and for the beginning of a Catholic Pregnancy Center in our area. A special Children’s Prayer Time will be held beginning immediately following the Exposition on the 4th and lasting about 30 minutes. Jesus tells us in Scripture to “let the children come to Me” and He always displayed a spe-cial affection for children; so bring your little ones to this special time with Him. 5th SUNDAY STEWARDSHIP OUTREACH - The recipient of the January 29/30 5th Sunday Stewardship Outreach collection will be St. Francis Retreat in San Juan Bautista. You may recall we made a donation to them immediately following their unfortunate fire a few years ago. They are still in financial need, related to rebuilding their retreat center. So many people have benefited from their peaceful sanctuary and the services they provide in the Spirit of St. Francis. Please be generous to them in the Outreach Collection. We also received a thank you note from the Hansenite Care Mission in the Philippines. We sent them $500.00 from our last Outreach Collection. They said it will go far in taking care of victims of leprosy and their families.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS #1948 5TH SUNDAY BREAKFAST - Come join us for a complete breakfast this Sunday, January 30th, between 8:00 and 11:30 a.m. The delicious meal includes eggs, bacon, ham, Italian sausage, pancakes, hash browns, fresh biscuits with sausage, S.O.S., and fresh fruit. The drinks include coffee, tea and orange juice. All this food for only $7.00 per person. Chil-dren under 12 eat for free. The Knights of Columbus Hall is located at 270 Rianda St., off of E. 2010 CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS - 2010 contribution statements for parishioners donating $250 or more to Sacred Heart Church will be mailed out the week of January 24. Sacred Heart is committed to developing an attitude of Stewardship. Thanks for your contributions! BLOOD DRIVE - Every two minutes, someone in the U.S. needs blood. Your donation could save up to two people’s lives! Be a hero on Monday, February 7th and donate blood. The blood drive will be held from 10 AM to 2 PM in the Cislini Youth Center.

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION (Bilingual Confessions): Friday: 12:15 pm; Friday: 6:00 pm Penance service (Please arrive on time to share the opening rite.) BAPTISM (Children): Please come to the Parish Office (with a copy of your child’s birth certificate) to receive information about preparation and scheduling.
