    $HE "MPOR$ANCE OF SCHEME OF WORK

    Every teacher no doubt has a scheme of work. It can be existed inside her head but to be

    more complete, the scheme of work should be written down.. A scheme of work is like a

    carefully thought out map to guide teachers to teach, to deliver her teaching and guidestudents to achieve the learning objective. In a simpler word, it tells what the teacher is going

    to do in the class room on those respective days.

    Scheme of work helps teachers to organie their work so that their course delivery

    remains on target and is accordance with the syllabus content. !eachers who adhere with

    scheme of work are most likely to achieve the aims and objectives of the syllabus taught.

    Scheme of work is not only teacher"s planning tools but also be considered as time

    management tools.#reparing scheme of work does no take much compared to the time

    saved for delivering the course in accordance with it. $nplanned teaching strategy will only

    add to teacher"s workloads.%oreover, if teacher changes during the period, or is absent on

    long term illness, potential conse&uential disruption tostudent progression can be minimised

    where scheme of work is able to guide course delivery.

    As planning tools, scheme of work can also be seen as way markers course delivery by

    determining the pre&uisites for moving on. 'or example, the scheme of work may specify the

    material or topic that should be covered before a test or an exam. 'or scheme of work to be

    useful , it is important that they contain some key information that has formative value. 'irst,

    as teachers, it is crucial to define the learning objectives as it is a necessary step to build up

    the knowledge and understanding of a subject or a topic. After this come the teaching

    activities which help the ac&uisition of knowledge and understanding. A flexible approach

    should be taken to defining teaching activities( the same topic can be approached in different

    ways.

    Scheme of work does not restrict the variety of learning styles and teaching resources.

    Similarly, in continuing the formative role of scheme of work, they can be used to integratethe )ross )urriculum !hemes such as moral, scocial and cultural development into course

    delivery.!he use of literacy, numeracy and I)! for teaching learning is also an aid to delivery

    or classroom teaching. Scheme of work should also define learner outcomes, and the

    means of assessing them. !his refers to the knowledge and understanding the learner

    should have ac&uired at the end of a session. It is necessary to do this so as to make sure

    that learning objectives have been achieved, that the teaching methods are effective and to

    determine whether the learner is ready to move on.
