PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3 PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3
On January 22 our nation will mark the 42nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal throughout the U.S. Since that tragic decision, more than 56 million children's lives have been lost to abortion, and many suffer that loss -- often in si-lence. Join thousands of Catholics across the country coming together in prayer for a "culture of life" from Saturday, January 17 - Sunday, January 25! The U.S. Bishops annual novena 9 Days for Life takes place Saturday, January 17 – Sunday, January 25. Pray for the respect and protec-tion of all human life with new intentions, brief reflections, and more each day. Download the novena online, or participate through Facebook, email, text message or an app. Join at www.9daysforlife.com! The Fifth Commandment is “Thou shall not kill.” without this Com-mandment, there would be no security for the life of man, either for his physical life or his spiritual life. Life is man’s greatest good, so God wishes to safeguard it against attack. God alone is the author of life; He alone may take life. The Fifth Commandment forbids: a) Willful murder, which is one of the sins crying to heaven for vengeance because it usurps God’s right over life, destroys one whom God has made to His own image and likeness, robs him of his most precious possession, and sends a soul into eternity unprepared. B) Abortion, which is willful murder committed before a child’s birth. Often disguised as ‘termination of pregnancy,” it deprives a child of baptism and right of life. It is pun-ished by the Church with excommunication. C) Suicide, which is willful self-murder, a crime against God, against soci-ety, against one’s family and against oneself. D) exposing one’s life or health to unnecessary danger without sufficient cause. E) fighting, which is opposed to the law of charity and which can lead to physical harm to self or others, and which can lead to murder. f) Quarreling, which tends toward fighting and even murder. G) Injurious words, which lead to quarrels and their consequences. “whoever say you fool, shall be liable to hell fire” (Matt. 5:22) H) Scandal, which is any word, deed or omission, wrong or seeming to be wrong, and leading other to sin. Those who give bad example to those under them, such as parents who curse and quarrel before their children, those who by their behavior teach or sug-gest evil, those who ridicule piety in others, those who counsel others to do evil, and those who provoke others to sin are guilty of malicious scandal. Another name for it is ‘soul murder.” what a terrible sin! Even murder of the body is one of the sins mentioned in the Bible as “crying to Heaven for vengeance.” Scandal is undoing the work of Christ, who came to save all men, and doing the work of the devil. “Woe to the world because of scandals,” said Our Lord, and “he that shall scandalize one of these little ones that believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone should be hanged about his neck, and that he should be drowned in the depth of the sea” (Matt. 18:7,6) i) Bad example, which is really scandal of a milder form. Evil, like fever, is contagious, especially with the young. J) hatred, which is enmity, directly opposed to the love of God and our neighbor. Hatred must be distinguished from mere dislike. “If any man say, I love God, and hates his brother, he is a liar,” says St. John (I Jn4:20). In fact, the Beloved Disciple makes hatred appear equal to mur-der: “whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer.” (I jn 3:15) May we all here in Ss Peter and Paul promote the dignity of life and defend the most vulnerable in our society. Every life is a gift of God. Fr. Mariano Varela, IVE
GLORIA from MASS of ST. FRANCIS - During this 5-week period of Ordinary Time before Lent and Easter, we will be learning a new “Gloria” for the Mass. For all churches in the English-speaking world, there were many changes to music and other parts of the Mass after the New Translation of the Roman Missal was implemented in Advent of 2011. With such seemingly drastic changes to the words of the Mass, many musicians across the country decided to learn new Mass parts that were musically simplistic. This was wisely done to aide the people in concentrating on learning the new text. Ss. Peter and Paul Parish also did this by choosing musical settings that were at the same time beautiful but also simple. This past year, the parish learned another very simple setting of the Mass parts (Gloria, Holy, Lamb of God, etc.). We will continue to use this and the other Masses at certain times throughout the year. Now that we are comfortable with the New Translation, it is time to look forward to more musically embellished setting that can be used for high Feasts and Solemnities of a more Solemn character. This new Gloria from the “Mass of St. Francis” by German-born composer Horst Buchholz (musician at St. Louis Basilica in St. Louis, MO) is one such setting. Even though it is more musically rich in its composition, you will also find that it is smartly composed to be in a comfortable range for congregational singing and incorporates mostly step-wise motion, avoiding large leaps, etc., which can discourage confident singing. It is the hope that we take these next weeks in the “bleak mid-winter” to encourage ourselves and those around us to sing a new song unto the Lord by doing our very best during this part of the Mass. We will only learn the Gloria at this time. As with all things that are new, it will become more comfortable over time, and we can be encouraged that it will be used for many years to come, being a setting that we can pull out to enrich the most heightened times of the Year, along with other Solemn settings of the Mass. If you are inter-ested, you can listen to this new Gloria and practice at home at: http://www.ignatius.com/promotions/adoremus-hymnal/downloads/audio/AdoremusHymnal_201_gloria-st-francis.mp3 The music may be found at: http://www.adoremus.org/BuchholzMassofStFrancis.pdf Dr. Buccholz has graciously given us permission to reprint his music at no cost. St. Cecilia, patroness of musicians, pray for us!

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
