Important notice from SoCRA

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has released two important related items.

The first is the Final NIH-FDA Clinical Trial Template for Phase 2 and 3 IND/IDE Studies. Thetemplate aims to assist NIH-funded investigators in preparing clinical trial documents efficiently so that

both IRBs and the FDA can perform speedy reviews.

NIH has also released a web-based platform where investigators can utilize the protocol template in aninteractive fashion. The Electronic Protocol Writing Tool allows for a collaborative approach to writingand reviewing protocols. Investigators will be able to use the tool to form a “protocol writing team” and

assign different individuals with writing and reviewing roles.

The blacklist is dead; long live the blacklistA new watchlist of ‘predatory’ journals and untrustworthy publishers is set to launch later this month — but only for those willing to

pay. The service could fill a gap left by Beall’s List, a popular blog run by academic Jeffrey Beall that listed potentially predatoryjournals, which was shut down suddenly five months ago.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced the latest Grand Challenges Explorations (GCE) grant recipients. 28 Projects in 11 countries

received an initial grant of US$100,000.

Grand Challenges Explorations is an initiative where initial grants are for USD $100,000 and successful projects are eligible to receive follow-on

funding of up to USD $1 million. Proposals are solicited twice a year for an expanding set of global health and development topics. Applications are

only two pages, and no preliminary data is required. Applicants can be at any experience level; in any discipline; and from any organization,

including colleges and universities, government laboratories, research institutions, non-profit organizations and for-profit companies.

We invite you to read our latest GCE blog and summaries of the GCE grants funded to date (over 1300 grants in 65 countries) and to check out the

New Developments in Psychological Wisdom Research

For this special issue, we are seeking high-quality empirical research and systematic reviews that will broaden and deepenour understanding of wisdom as a construct, its predictors, manifestations, outcomes, and limitations. All manuscriptsselected for inclusion will be strongly theory based and include wisdom as a central variable. A broad range ofmethodological approaches will be accepted, provided that a convincing theoretical rationale is given.

Cognitive Neuroscience of Aging

Ever since the first published functional neuroimaging study of cognitive aging (Grady et al., 1994), the field has grownexponentially. Our theoretical understanding of age-related changes in functional activation—declines, increases, andpreservation of both activation and connectivity—continues to evolve. For this special issue, we invite empirical papersdescribing cutting-edge advances in field and review articles that synthesize knowledge to shed new light on cognitiveaging.
