Despite the many disrupons to our regular

schedule, the 2014-2015 school year connues

moving forward. We’re now over half way

through the third grading period, meaning spring

is right around the corner… cross your ngers.

However, many weeks sll exist for winter

weather, so we encourage everyone to connueexercising cauon when traveling.

Speaking of weather  – which has exhausted a

great deal of energy again this school year  – we

have missed a grand total of 76.5 hours of

instrucon due to weather-related issues (as of

this wring). This number of missed hours

requires us to make up four school days, one of

which we made up on February 16. The

extended-day plan put in place for the last two

weeks in February also allowed us to make up a

second day. This leaves us with two more school

days to make up. We are currently looking at

various opons, including more extended days in

March and April. However, unl an alternate

plan is put in place, our make -up days will be

May 29 and June 1. In addion… with the gradu-

aon ceremony scheduled or Sunday, May 24, an

alternate plan for the senior class is a disnctpossibility at this me. With all that said, we will

make every eort to keep you well informed as

we trek our way through the nal three-plus

months of this weather-plagued school year.

Tired of the winter blues? Come out and

support our local chapter of the FFA by aending

the annual pancake and sausage breakfast on

March 14. Proceeds from this event benet the

agricultural programs oered at the high school.

Turning to academic maers, this year’s state -

mandated tests are quietly creeping up on us.

Before long, we will be in the tesng season. To

increase our students’ chances for success, our

teachers connue to introduce, develop, and

assess their students on the academic content

standards as outlined by the Ohio Department of

Educaon. Two of our primary goals for this year

are to have a district-wide Performance Indexscore over 100 points and to have a vast

    improvement on our value-added measurement.

Parents can help make these goals a reality by

connuing to support our teachers with their

children’s schoolwork and by encouraging their

children to put forth their best eort on these

tests. Although no one is excited to take tests,

these assessments are a barometer that allows

us to determine if our students are making a

year’s growth in the core academic subjects.

Without accurate data, we will not know in what

areas we need to improve. Remember, success

at school is a team eort between home and

school. Everyone plays a vital part in the educa-

    on of our students.

Time sll exists for you to nominate a former

sta member for the Wayne Trace Sta Hall of

Fame Class of 2015. If you wish to obtain a nomi-naon form, contact Ann Olwin in the central

oce, and she will assist you. The Hall of Fame

event has become very popular in the commu-

nity, and you can play a vital role by nominang

one or more worthy former sta members.

Congratulaons go out to several of our varsity

athlec squads. Our wrestling team captured its

rst-ever Green Meadows Conference tle this

year; our boys’ basketball team captured its

twenty-sixth conference tle this year; and our

cheerleaders have qualied for the state compe-

on in March. Great job done by all.

Finally, please be aware of some further school

calendar reminders: 1.) Spring break is the week

of March 23-27. None of these ve days will be

used as make-up days. 2.) School will not be in

session on Friday, April 3 in observance of Good

Friday. 3.) School will operate on a two-hourdelay, district-wide, on Wednesday, April 15 for

the purpose of a teacher in-service. Buses will

run two hours late that day.

As always, if you have quesons or concerns

about your child’s educaonal experience at

Wayne Trace, feel free to contact your building

    principal or superintendent.

    Go Raiders!

Just a reminder that Kindergarten registraon

for the 2015-2016 school year is underway.

Opons include a possible Young 5's (Transional

    Kindergarten) and regular Tradional Kindergar-

ten classrooms. Both types of classrooms are all

day, every day programs that provide students

with a Kindergarten curriculum based on the

Ohio Department of Educaon content stand-

ards. Students enrolled in Tradional Kindergar-

ten will need to be 5 years of age prior to

August 1, 2015. Students enrolled in the Young

5's (Transional Kindergarten) must be 5 years of

age on or before September 30, 2015. It isimportant to note that the Young 5's

    (Transional Kindergarten) classroom will be

    mined by Wayne Trace administraon.

All students interested in enrolling in either

program are required to parcipate in the

    Kindergarten screening process. Screenings will

    Kevin Wilson, Principal

State Tesng has been a very hot topic

throughout the state this year. Grover Hillstudents in grade 3  – 6 will take the state ELA

test during the week of March 2. This ELA assess-

ment is in three secons and so the students will

take unit one on Tuesday followed by unit two on

Wednesday and unit three on Thursday. Then,

the following week the students will take the

Math assessment. This assessment is a two part

assessment and will be taken on Tuesday and

Wednesday. Finally, the students in grades four,

ve and six will take the Science & Social Studies

on Thursday, March 12. The teachers have been

working with the students on the skills needed to

pass these test. So, when the results are back we

as a school will use this data to idenfy our

strengths as well as any areas for improvement.

The American Red Cross will be at WTGH for

the annual “Red Cross Blood Drive”. This drive

will take place on Wednesday, March 18 from1:30 unl 5:30. If you would like to parcipate in

members who will be saving a life on March 18.

    Kindergarten registraon for the 2015-2016

school year is just around the corner. If you

have a child of Kindergarten age, you may go to

the school web-site or contact Grover Hill

Elementary to request a materials packet. Aer

you have the packet lled out and returned to

the Grover Hill oce you will be ready for this

    year’s April 22 & 23 screening. This screening will

forward to hearing from you concerning Kinder-

    garten registraon.

Students at WTGH will celebrate Read Across

America again this year which is held in conjunc-

on with Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Dr. Seuss was born

    Theodor Seuss Geisel (3/2/1904 – 9/24/1991). He

was an American writer, poet, and cartoonist

who is widely known for his children's books

    WT JR./SR. HIGH SCHOOL

    Greg Leeth, Principal

March is the month that Ohio Graduaon

Test (OGT) administraon takes place all around

Ohio. Parents of all sophomore students and

parents of junior and senior students who have

not passed one or more secons of the OGT are

reminded that tesng will take place March

16-20. The following week, March 23 through 27

will serve as make up days for students who are

absent the previous week. Passing the OGT is

required for graduaon for current sophomores,

     juniors, and seniors.

Important Note: The week of March 23-27 is

spring break week for Wayne Trace Local

Schools. This means students who are absent

during the previous week will report to school for

tesng during their spring break. Parents, I urge

you to make certain students are in school during

the rst week of tesng so they are not required

    to test during their break.

By the me you read this newsleer, students

in grades 7, 8, and 9 will have taken the rst

round of Ohio’s Next Generaon Assessments.

These tests, commonly referred to as PARCC or

Common Core tests, are a graduaon require-

ment for students in the Class of 2018 (current

freshmen) and beyond. Federal and state laws

require all Ohio school districts to test specic

grades and courses. There is no law that allows a

parent or student to opt out of state tesng and

there is no state opt-out procedure or form.

Again, these tests are required by current law. A

student in the Class of 2018 CANNOT graduate

from an Ohio high school without taking these

tests. For more informaon go to the following

    Happening-with-Ohio-s-Graduaon-Requiremen/

    Graduaon-Requirements-2018-Beyond

perform the musical Beauty and the Beast   on

March 12, 14, and 15. We invite everyone in the

community to come see these performances.

Lastly, I want to thank all students and sta for

their hard work and daily preparaon. The winter

months can be challenging with weather delays

and closings, but the students and sta work

diligently every moment they have together to

receive and to provide a quality educaon at

Wayne Trace Junior and Senior High School.
