STATEMENT ON VACCINATIONS FROM THE OU AND
RABBINICAL COUNCIL OF AMERICA
Orthodox Jewish parents, like responsible parents
across the United States, overwhelmingly vaccinate
their children against measles, mumps, rubella, polio
and the other childhood diseases for which
inoculations are now almost miraculously
commonplace. As in many communities, a small
minority of parents chooses not to do so. The ongoing
measles outbreak demonstrates how this could bear
very serious consequences, not only for their own
children but others’ too, especially those medically
unable to be vaccinated. The Orthodox Union (OU) and
the Rabbinical Council of America (RCA) strongly urge
all parents to vaccinate their healthy children on the
timetable recommended by their pediatrician.
Parents who choose to not vaccinate often cite a
medical study that purported to link autism and the
MMR vaccine. The study was discovered to be
fraudulent and was withdrawn; its lead author was
found to have acted “dishonestly and irresponsibly,”
and his license to practice medicine in Britain was
revoked.
Judaism places the highest value on preserving
human life. It is well known that those facing even a
potential life or death situation are instructed to set
aside the Sabbath and other key tenets of halachic
(Jewish law) observance until the emergency has
passed. Prayers for good health and for the complete
and perfect healing of the ill are an ages-old aspect of
Jewish tradition. But prayers must go hand-in-hand
with availing oneself of medical science, including
vaccination.
There are halachic obligations to care for one’s own
health as well as to take measures to prevent harm
and illness to others, and Jewish law defers to the
consensus of medical experts in determining and
prescribing appropriate medical responses to illness
and prevention. Therefore, the consensus of major
poskim (halachic decisors) supports the vaccination of
children to protect them from disease, to eradicate
illness from the larger community through so-called
herd immunity, and thus to protect others who may
be vulnerable. The vaccination of children who can
medically be vaccinated is absolutely the only
responsible course of action.

HALACHIC ORGAN DONATION SOCIETY
5K RACE MARCH 1ST IN CENTRAL PARK
Dear YIEB families,
On March 1st, a team of college students and I will be
running a 5k race in Central Park to raise money for a
cause that is very important to me- the Halachic
Organ Donor Society.
What is the Halachic Organ Donor Society (HODS)?
HODS is a non-profit that aims to save lives, both
Jewish and non-Jewish, by increasing organ donation
by Jews to the general population. The organization
plays an important role by educating Jews about the
differenthalachic and medical issues concerning
organ donation, by offering a unique organ donor card
that enables Jews to donate organs according to their
halachic belief, and by providing rabbinic consultation
and oversight for cases of organ transplantation. You
can learn more about the organization at
www.hods.org, and of course feel free to contact me
about it. If you would like help contribute to such a
worthy cause, here's how you can donate:

COMMUNITY MEMBER IN NEED OF A KIDNEY
There is a member of our greater Jewish community, a
dedicated physician, a child of Holocaust survivors, a
dedicated father and husband who is suffering from kidney
failure. He serves our community unconditionally, and
continues to be there for everybody in need. He now needs
our help! He is in desperate need of a KIDNEY, Blood type O.
He has approached Renewal to help him through the process
of finding a donor as he has exhausted his options of finding a
donor from family. Renewal stands ready to help anyone
interested in kidney donation throughout the entire process.
They support the donor by arranging for convenient times for
testing, giving rides to appointments, providing continuous
guidance and covering loss of wages and expenses directly
related to donating the kidney. For more information about
kidney donation in general please continue to read the
summary below.
You will find out that many can participate in this worthy life-
saving deed with minimal impact to one’s own life. Anyone
interested in more information for the opportunity to save his
life is asked to please contact Renewal by email
[email protected] or calling Renewal at 718-431-9831.
Please indicate that you are calling about Recipient #793.
All inquiries will be kept strictly confidential. May the act of
our being proactive in helping our fellow member be a merit
for him to have a complete recovery. The following is
information provided by Renewal. Please visit
www.renewal.org for more information.
WHO CAN BE A DONOR?
Donors need to be between the ages of 18 and early 70’s and
can include family and friends or even an altruistic donor. An
ideal donor should have compatible blood type with the
recipient. Typically, someone who has cancer, diabetes,
kidney disease, heart disease, liver disease, sickle cell
disease, HIV or hepatitis C will not qualify to be a donor, but
are not automatically ruled out.
WHAT ARE THE HEALTH RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH BEING A
DONOR?
The risks of donation are similar to those involved with any
surgery, such as bleeding and infection. Current research
indicates that kidney donation does not change life
expectancy or increase a person’s risks of developing kidney
disease or any other health problems. For precautionary
reasons, the donor usually spends 1 2 days in the hospital
following surgery.
WHAT AFFECTS WILL SURGERY HAVE ON DONOR?
You may feel tired for the first week or two after the surgery
and are encouraged to rest and limit your activities during this
period. You should not lift anything that weighs more that 20
lbs for the first four-six weeks. You may also have some
swelling around the incision area and should plan to wear
loose, comfortable clothes. You are encouraged to be active
and walking is considered excellent exercise during this
period. A leave from work is recommended for approximately
two weeks following surgery.
WHAT KIND OF FOLLOW-UP IS NEEDED?
You will have a post operative appointment with your
surgeon 1 2 weeks after the surgery. Additional follow up
appointments will be scheduled 6 months, 1 year and 2 years
after your donation. Annual check ups will suffice thereafter.

J SERVE: THE NATIONAL DAY
OF JEWISH YOUTH SERVICE
SOUTH RIVER, NJ (February 18, 2015) This April, more than
11,000 Jewish teens from around the world will come
together to serve their communities and make a difference.
The Jewish Federation in the Heart of New Jersey is running J-
Serve, the International Day of Jewish Youth Service, on
Sunday, April 19th from 1-4 pm at East Brunswick Jewish
Center, 511 Ryders Lane, East Brunswick.
Inspired by Jewish values, the day will inspire and engage
over 125 youngsters from 6th to 12th grade, including those
from other faith communities, in worthwhile local causes
while educating them about community needs and deepening
their connection with supporting charities – and one another.
Our success is collective. One youngster in their hometown
can make a difference, but when thousands of teens work
together, they change the world.
Participants are encouraged to register for a selection of
volunteer projects both on and off-site
at jewishmiddlesex.org/family/j-serve.
