4 Way Test

Of the Things we Think, Say or Do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIENDSHIPS?

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all con-cerned?

OPENING REMARKS FROM THE PRESIDENT

I was asked by Washington Unified School District, Linda Luna, to participate in the Principle for a Day Program on Thursday March 2, along with other entities that partner with the school district. I was

assigned to Stonegate Elementary and Principle Ben Kingsbury. I had a wonderful

time shadowing Ben throughout the morning. It was also a National Day of

Reading program so I also read to Ms Raski’s 3rd grade classroom. I got to read Up On

Pop upside down for the students could see the pictures. Only got caught one time saying No instead of On. Try it, easy to

do! The students had many questions for me regarding my age, how long have I been

an engineer, etc. The conclusion, I look really healthy for a man of my age.

Bill’s Box

We had a great turnout for out speech contest. Usually there are four speakers, but we had six finalists. To keep the meeting on schedule, we skipped some of the normal routine items that I have from week to week. I want to thank Joanie Kapell and JoAnn Moffett for their time and commitment to this contest year after year. I also want to thank the judges, score keepers and the invaluable time keeper for their participation. I am glad that I did not have to judge these student speakers. They were all great. This was probably the first time many had been in front of an audience. We had to have a First Place finalist, but in my opinion, they all were First Place. Next week the Interact members will be running the show, starting with the pledge through the foundation draw, raffle and adjournment. The programs will be a RYLA presentation. As a side note, our club is sponsoring two students and the morning club in sponsoring two students to RYLA this year. However, the interview committee has selected five students worthy of going. There will be a “Pass-the-Hat” at Friday’s meeting in hopes of raising enough money to sponsor the fifth participant. Unfortunately, I will not be at Friday’s meeting due to a family commitment. Please, everyone, attempt to be at this meeting in support of our Interact members and give generously. Thank You and Rotary Up! -Bill

NOTE TAKER SIGN-UPS

Meals on Wheels Program Expansion

The staff at the Senior’s Center could use some more help. With our new members I am hoping that we can get 8 more volunteers to run a route on either Tuesdays or Wednesdays. It requires about one to one

and one half hours of your time once every four weeks, delivering meals to about 12 elderly or disabled West Sacramento residents. You

would be working with a partner, so grab a Rotary friend and let me know that you are willing to both help out. When we get 8 volunteers I will meet with you and we will organize our new group. Thanks for con-

sidering this way to provide Service Above Self.

FUTURE ROTARIAN

Melina Dhillon My name is Melina Dhillon

and I am currently a Junior at River City High School. I have been involved in Interact for 3

years. My position on the Interact Board is Secretary

Shadow for late lunch. I joined Interact because my friends joined and enjoyed Interact events. I hope to accomplish leadership skills in Interact.

Because of this, my goals for the future is to be more involved in my community. I would like to attend UC Davis as a pre-med

major. However, I do not know a specific area in the medical field I

would like to pursue. Interact made me gain self-confidence to

be more social with others.

To El Salvador and Beyond…..

The Rotary Club of Burlington, Ontario, Canada distributed over 550 wheelchairs in El Salvador in 2013 to help some of the 465,000 Salvador-ans who have been injured by land mines, armed conflict or gang vio-lence. But the Canadians, being very nice people, wanted to hand off the project to their local Rotary partners.

A French-Canadian engineer member named Peter French (no really!) worked with local high school shop students who used computer-aided design to reduce the number of parts from 130 to 30. They ship the parts to the Rotary Club of El Salvador for assembly. A member of the local club is further re-designing the wheelchair to simplify it even more.
