For nearly 50 years, Yolo Food Bank has elevated the common good for the people and communities of Yolo County by fighting food insecurity. Founded as a volunteer-run backyard gleaning program, the Yolo Food Bank has grown to an organizational network of staff, volunteers and nearly 70 partner agencies, including Meals on Wheels and the Yolo County Childrens Alliance. They coordinate the storage and distribution of food from a network of growers, manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers and grocery stores, while simultaneously cultivating new sources of food. In the past year alone, they have provided this food to 55,000 people in 19,000 households each month, distributing more than 4 million pounds of food annually, all with a small but very dedicated staff and an army of volunteers. According to Michael, 1 in 4 children in Yolo County do not have enough to eat; senior citizens and rural residents are disproportionately impacted, as are the working poor and their families, the recently unemployed, veterans, students and migrant farm workers. By providing for the nourishment of our most vulnerable neighbors, the Yolo Food Bank is a partner in raising the quality of life for all who live and do business in Yolo County. The Food Bank recently celebrated the grand opening of their new facility, along with 600 of their closest friends and 30+ elected officials. A 9.5 million capital campaign was needed to complete the facility and the Yolo community stepped up and made it happen. Rotary Happens Making Dreams Real

Yolo Food Bank Board Member and Past President of the Mighty Rotary Club of West Sacramento, Dan Ramos, introduced our speaker on Friday, Executive Director Michael Bisch with the Yolo Food Bank.

For nearly 50 years, Yolo Food Bank has elevated the common good for the people and communities of Yolo County by fighting food insecurity. Founded as a volunteer-run backyard gleaning program, the Yolo Food Bank has grown to an organizational network of staff, volunteers and nearly 70 partner agencies, including Meals on Wheels and the Yolo County Children’s Alliance.

From Tom Wallace: BREAKING NEWS!!

Last Friday, Tim Eng, Deputy Director of the MOW program in Yolo County and Kris Larson, the West Sacramento Site Manager, visited our club and emphasized the need for our deliverers to be at the Seniors Center no later than 10:30 AM. They also described the problems they encounter when a scheduled person doesn’t show up, as their staff is small.

On the positive side, they brought us a large bag of nice cotton MOW tee shirts, gray and pink, sizes M, L and XL. I will keep the bag in my car, so if you would like a shirt, see me after our weekly meeting.

The President’s Page PETER’S PRINCIPAL

Opening Remarks From Friday’s Meeting Across the country, folks enjoy a tall, frosty glass on National Chocolate Milk Day which is observed annually on September 27.

Invented by Hans Sloane in the late 1680s, today chocolate milk can be purchased premixed or it can be made at home with either cocoa powder and a sweetener or with melted chocolate, chocolate syrup or chocolate milk mix.

While Sloane was in Jamaica, he encountered a beverage the locals drank made with cocoa mixed with water. After trying it, he reported the flavor to be nauseating. After some experimentation, Sloane found a way to mix the cocoa with milk to make it more pleasant tasting. He brought the chocolate recipe back with him upon his return to England. Now people enjoy this delicious drink everyday.

I am Peter Anderson and it is days like these that make me proud to be the 71st President of the Mighty

OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the: ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD: The application of ideal of service by every Rotarian to his/her/ personal, business and community life;

FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideals of service.

The 4 Way Test

Of the Things we Think, Say or Do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIEND-SHIPS?

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
