Dear Parents,

It has been a challenging week coping with the heat, but the dry weather has allowed the campus to be used to the full. We have many short-stay visitors from mainland Europe attending our Summer School and they seem to have had a great deal of fun playing ‘hide and seek’ style games in the evenings. A tame male pheasant has also been a star attraction and he seems to

have made himself at home around the campus (seen here outside my office). I am not sure how much he will enjoy the shotgun lessons we are hoping to offer in October.

The heatwave also gave an appropriate backdrop to the North Devon Schools

Wakeboarding Championships which we duly won. The individual winner was Buddy Wahl, but the real star of the Shebbear team is his mum Dixie who takes on all-comers in this physically demanding sport. We also played in two cricket semi-finals this week - winning one and there was an excellent draw against West Buckland at tennis.

Today is the final day of the GCSE season. There are many relieved faces around the school and Form Five can now enjoy a relaxing summer. For the rest of us we can look forward to Activities Week and a chance for a bit of character development outside of the classroom.

The Prep Inter-House swimming gala took place on Thursday morning, with all of the children in Years 3-6 having the opportunity to take part. Competition was fierce, with forty two races taking place. The swimmers of all abilities did an excellent job, earning points for their Houses, as well as supporting each other. Many congratulations to Thorne, who won by a very narrow margin.

Congratulations to Jack, Bella, Axel, James, Lottie, Rosie, Heidi and Richard for winning this week’s Golden Stickers. The latest BAFTA (Behaviour Award For Thoughtful Actions) has been awarded to Ella, with the Manners Medals going to Toby. Bronze certificates have also been won by Maddie, Tom and James. Well done to all of these children.

We also heard this week that Jack came third in the Pro’s Open in the Devon Wakeboarding Championships at the North Devon Wake Park in Clovelly. As Jack is still in Year 6, this makes his achievement even more impressive.

Our Year 6 children are at RMB Chivenor today for their education day, enjoying displays and demonstrations from a range of historical and current military themes.

I hope you have a good weekend.Matthew Foale

News from the Prep SchoolDear Parents,Shade under the trees was the order of the day at our Cream Teas on the Lawn on Monday afternoon. Parents and grandparents enjoyed an hour of glorious sunshine, as well as tea, scones and sandwiches, served by many of our Year 6 children. My thanks to the children for doing such a good job and also to Mrs Goode and Mrs Kirby, for organising and putting on such a super spread for everyone, at this very enjoyable event.

At the beginning of the week, our Monday morning assembly focused on making positive choices and the dilemmas we can often face. We spoke about examples of random acts of kindness and the impact they can have on people, with the children being asked to focus on such kindness on a daily basis.

Pre-Prep and Pre-School’s visit to Bridge MillPre-Prep joined Pre-School on their trip to Bridge Mill this week. They were warmly greeted by Rosie and Alan and a rather friendly sheep called Alice. It was an extremely hot day and the children were very excited about the prospect of pond dipping. Unfortunately we didn’t have nets large enough to fish the children out with, so we settled for investigating which creatures were permanent residents of the pond instead. We also went on a ‘beastie’ hunt and found a variety of caterpillars, damselflies, bees, newts, water boatmen, beetles and beautiful butterflies. The amount of wildlife on display was astonishing. The children enjoyed a riverside picnic lunch under the trees in the garden and were relieved to cool off on the grass. One child commented that it was “the best day ever!”

Years 3, 4 and 5 on a beach cleanLast Friday, children in Year 3, 4 and 5 travelled to Westward Ho! to participate in a beach clean, which proved to be very successful. Armed with gloves, litter pickers and bin bags, all the children got stuck in and picked up as much litter as they could find. After three bin bags had been filled up, the total amount of rubbish picked up from the beach came to 13.5KG. All of the children should be very proud of themselves, not just for picking up the litter, but for the enthusiasm they showed when helping to keep the environment clean.

Year 4 History talksAfter two months of preparation, Year 4 students gathered together in front of Year 3 and Year 5 to deliver their end of term History

presentations. The topic was British Inventors and Inventions. Students had chosen subjects ranging from Alexander Graham Bell’s invention of the telephone, to the YouTuber Colin Furze. The formats ranged from Powerpoint presentations, to posters and videos. Some children brought artefacts as supporting evidence and others had created quizzes to challenge the audience. Isobel Gee had even made a special trip to Dartmouth to visit Newcomen Road which was named after John Newcomen who invented the steam engine. After everyone’s presentation had been delivered, the audience voted democratically for the winner who was … Billy Finch, with his amazing scrap book report about Walter Bentley and his luxury cars. Well done Billy for all your hard work.

Under 11 rounders vs KingsleyOn Thursday the 22nd of June, the Under 11 girls played a relaxed rounders match against Kingsley. Finally all our fielding and batting practice really began to pay off and the girls played as a cohesive and effective team. During the first innings we scored eight and a half rounders, with strong hitting from Demelza and Sara. We then fielded very successfully and managed to contain the Kingsley team, only allowing them to score two.

During the second innings we sealed the win, scoring another good clutch of rounders and then managing to catch and stump many of the Kingsley players out. The final score was fourteen and a half rounders to us and five and a half to Kingsley. Special mention must be made of Jesse-Mae’s super accurate bowling and player of the match was awarded to Thalia who both batted and fielded superbly.

Under 11 cricket vs KingsleyThis was the final game of the season for our cricketers and the final Prep School fixture for our Year 6 players. It was a fitting end to the season, with an exciting match, and plenty of cricketing skills on show.

Shebbear batted first and struggled to find many boundaries, against some consistent bowling. Our five pairs reached a total of 251, which looked as though it would be difficult to defend. All of the boys contributed to the score, but George, Harry and Ferdie all batted particularly well, keeping the scoreboard ticking along.

As Kingsley came into bat, ever single run would count and our bowling helped restrict Kingsley’s run chase, although it was our

DofE Bronze Practice ExpeditionLast Friday, 10 members of form 4 departed school on the first half of their bronze Duke of Edinburgh award expeditions. Their route took them from the college to an overnight camp at Smytham Manor campsite, Little Torrington. The team made the most of the long evening setting up camp and preparing their evening meals on their stoves. After rising early on Saturday morning the teams continued their route along the Tarka Trail to their end destination

in Instow. Glorious weather accompanied the teams along their route and, in stark contrast to the winters Ten Tors training, sunburn and dehydration were the real challenges testing the teams. They made fantastic progress and performed excellently throughout. They are now eagerly planning their qualifying expedition route along a section of the coast path which is taking place in the last week of term. I hope you will all join me in wishing them luck in final stages of their Duke of Edinburgh programme.

A Request from our Uganda TeamWe desparately require duffle bags, kit bags and suitcases, ideally about 60 litre capacity, to transport all the charity items kindly given to us for people in Uganda. If you are able to donate any old baggage that you no longer need we would be very grateful. We regret that we will not be able to bring them back from Uganda.

International Summer SchoolThe last week has seen the summer school take part in a wide range of activities. Last Friday they enjoyed a fascinating trip to Morwellham Quay, where they learnt the art of rope making; discovered Victorian fashion; experienced what school was like in 1867; and explored the copper mines which once sustained industry in the area. On Monday, Miss McGuire and I took half of the group to Bude on a coastal walk, which was followed with a well deserved ice cream; whilst Mr Bryan took the rest of the group to practice archery. Wednesday saw the entire group travel to Dingles Vintage Amusement Park where they had a taster of what rides were like in the 1950s. Aside from the excursions, the summer school have been working hard in their intensive English lessons as well as attending timetabled lessons with their peers in the main Senior and Prep Schools.

Lower School Chamber ConcertThe Recital Room in the Music Centre was the venue for this wonderful event on Wednesday 14th June.

The Music Department were delighted to be able to present a selection of performances from our younger musicians from Forms 1 to 3. Many of these budding musicians were performing for the first time and many were also employing their second or even third instruments. This event was held in the department’s Recital Room. The soloists were very familiar with the acoustics of the space and the pianists were able to exploit the exquisite tonal qualities of the Model A Steinway. Both of these factors added to the success of the performances with a high level of confidence being exhibited by the players.

The gifted performers were Jason Towl, Luke Honey, Kelly Wong, Adam Pennington, Niamh Shaw, Lola Frisby Williams, Aleyna, Singleton, Bella Richards, Gracie Boycott, Tony Chen, Alexander Ward, Oliver Temple, Timothy Parker, Sophie Temple, Archie Boycott, Yoyo Lin, Samuel Odlin and Ellerker Singleton

This concert would not have been possible without the dedicated support of our instrumental teachers who have worked extremely hard to prepare, rehearse and encourage the performers, for which I offer sincere thanks.

Lower 6th Geography Field TripOur Lower 6th Geographers have been enjoying time away from the classroom doing fieldwork studies to support their preparations for their ‘Independent Investigation’ paper, very ably led by Tom, at Skern Lodge. The students’ highlights have included the delicious meals (very generous servings), skimming stone competitions and supporting the local ice cream trade!

Form 4 Geography Field TripOn June 15th, 29 Form Four Geographers and 4 members of staff went to Boscastle to look at flood management strategies used in a town that has experienced an extreme flood event. The students also looked at the relationship between the 2004 flood event and tourism in the local area. There was plenty of opportunity for all to enjoy an ice cream (or two in some cases!) The students are now producing an independent write up of the fieldwork.

Many thanks to Mrs Burges, Mr Aldridge and Pip Mahoney for accompanying us on the trip.

North Devon Schools Wakeboarding ChampionshipsAfter an exciting schools competition at the North Devon Wakepark with nine schools represented, and despite having all our riders in the same category, we won best school and in the top category got all three podium places as well as runner up fourth place.

Buddy came first, Joe second, Jack from Prep School third and Patrick fourth. Stan and Eddie had unlucky falls in the competition, but in practice, amongst other great tricks, Stan did a perfect 720 aerial spin and Eddie did a great front flip. All were very sporting and supportive to other competitors and a credit to the school. Well done everyone!

A Word from the LibraryThe Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize is awarded each year to the science book which judging panels of children have selected as the best of those shortlisted. Once again Shebbear College has

been given the honour of being selected to form a judging panel. The books are available in the library and will be scrutinized by groups between now and October. A reminder that reading for pleasure is not necessarily restricted to reading fiction!

A growing body of research is showing that the benefits of reading go far beyond literacy. One of these is the power of stories to enable readers to handle emotions. The ability to empathise and mental well-being are increasingly being recognised as fundamental life skills. A skill that has, for years, been buried deep in psychology textbooks is now emerging as a valuable force for change. In research for the Cambridge University, Professor Maria Nikolajeva found that “reading fiction provides an excellent training for young people in developing and practising empathy and theory of mind, that is, understanding of how other people feel and think.” Empathy Day on 13th June was celebrated in the library with a display of books that promote this and a book list has been added to the library website.

Bilbao Marathon UpdateThis week’s heatwave has undoubtedly made my marathon training somewhat harder; in fact, I was forced to train exclusively inside using the treadmill in order to avoid the risk of heatstroke! This may lead you to ask ‘but aren’t you running your marathon in Spain, where it is going to be even hotter?’ Well, the Bilbao marathon isn’t until October, and doesn’t start until 8pm, which means that temperatures are unlikely to exceed 21 degrees. Additionally, I will be working in the south of France for 10 weeks this summer, which should allow me to acclimatise to what will be fairly similar running conditions to Northern Spain.

I am undertaking the marathon through university; I am raising funds for the Meningitis Research Foundation. Meningitis is an illness which affects thousands of young people - particularly university students - every year and can kill in days. I would be extremely grateful if you would sponsor me; you can either hand me sponsorship money at school in person, or visit my fundraising page athttps://exeterragruns.everydayhero.com/uk/fundraise-with-phil-to-fight-meningitis

I am also keeping a training blog, which you can read at: bilbaomarathon.wordpress.com

Junior Sports Dinner ReportLast Tuesday under the glorious sunshine on Beckly Field, our year seven to ten sporting talent gathered to celebrate their success, at the junior sports BBQ. Parents and players showed their unprecedented support with over 170 people in attendance to congratulate the award winners. The evening followed an exciting set of fixtures against All Hallow’s U13 cricket and rounders teams; on tour from Wiltshire. A strong opposition proved too much for our U13 rounders players who were drawing at half-time but sorely missed Jemima Vereker once she was out. Our U14s who played the first match of this triangular event narrowly won by one run. In the cricket once again the opposition were very accomplished with a top order batsman who retired on fifty runs, though Jacob Luxton was Shebbear’s man-of-the-match and batted extremely well for his 14 runs. All in all the year has been one of significant player development in all sports and this will need to continue if we are to remain among the top sporting schools in Devon and indeed the South West. Senior Sports DinnerLast Friday evening we held our senior sports dinner at Life’s A Beach in Bude to celebrate the year’s sporting achievements. Players and coaches enjoyed a three course meal and award presentation which was well supported by players of all sports. It has been a year of significant achievement, not least with national representation on various fronts and regular victories over our nearest rivals. Stuart Williams’ footballing talent will see him attend Millfield next year and we wish him all the best, whilst Alessandro Aliberti, Siaoni Funaki and Charlie Short continue to perform well in the independent schools U16 England Lamb’s rugby side. With first team victories against West Buckland in both football and rugby along with a comprehensive 9-1 win over Plymouth College in girls’ hockey our rightful place among Devon’s best sports schools has been cemented. These kinds of performances are testament to the efforts of all the players, coaches and parents and whilst we enjoy the highs we must continue to work collectively in moving forward. Cricket ReportsThe U12s had a convincing 8 wicket victory over West Buckland to reach the final of the Graham Harris Cup this week. Jemima Vereker took two early wickets and those together with a couple of run outs soon saw the visitors in trouble. They were eventually dismissed for just 69 before Harry Arden and Jemima put on 50 in their opening stand for Shebbear.

The final will be played at Instow, the home ground of North Devon C.C, on Friday 30th June at 6.00pm.

Andy Bryan

Wednesday afternoon saw a Shebbear U14/15 side take on Truro School’s U15 side on another very hot afternoon. Truro batted first scoring 158 off 25 overs with most batsmen chipping in on the score. The most impressive bowling figures came from Toby Biggs, who after a shaky start, took 4 wickets for 36 runs. With the bat Shebbear struggled to get going against a very good bowling attack. This made Tod Millar’s 51 runs even more impressive as he batted nearly all the way through the innings, securing his half century with seven fours and a huge six, which nearly made the all weather pitch. The team, many of whom will hoping to score more runs, face Mount Kelly at Shebear on Saturday.

Arron Steel

On a glorious Monday afternoon Shebbear under 14s took on West Buckland in the North Devon Cup semi-final on Beckley Field. Shebbear won the toss and elected to bowl first. Luke Maxa (0-16) set the tone with some excellent tight bowling to restrict the visitors run scoring, ably supported by Freddie Stevenson who claimed the wicket of one of the West Buckland openers with a vicious delivery that was caught behind by wicket keeper Todd Miller off the batsman’s glove. After 20 overs in the field Shebbear were set a total of 119 to win. At one stage it looked like Shebbear were going to stroll to victory, as Luke Maxa and Freddie Stevenson continued their excellent performances with the bat with a solid second wicket stand. Unfortunately, once Luke Maxa was caught trying to up the run rate things started to slip away from Shebbear. Freddie Stevenson gallantly fought his way to 50 in an effort to chase down the runs. However, once he fell in the final over it was clear that Shebbear were going to fall just short of the required total. It was a positive display from the under 14s and certainly a performance to build on in the final weeks of the season.

Nick Law

A mixed U12 and U13 side traveled to Bramdean on Thursday to rekindle a fixture that hasn’t played for some time. Shebbear batted first there were some excellent performances from Jemima Vereker (27 retired), Luke Maxa (26 retirted), Harrison Mitchell (26 retired) and Jacob Luxton (28 not out). This set Bramdean a challenging

180 runs to win from their 20 overs. Bramdean were off to a good start with 25 runs for 1 wicket, until an exceptional piece of fielding from Luke Twyman who hit the stumps from the boundary to run out their dangerous batsman. After that, there was top quality bowling from Oliver Hawkins (3-14), Luke Maxa (2-2), Jacob Luxton (2-4) and Aaron Moulnar (0-0). Captain Luke Maxa and his team have improved immensely throughout the season and we are looking forward to our rematch v Mount Kelly on Saturday.

Tennis ReportsLast Thursday our U12 and U13 girls played their one and only tennis fixture at home. With West Buckland no longer playing rounders fixtures to focus on tennis only our girls would face a tough challenge.

However, it was a challenge our U12A team met with aplomb in the scorching heat, by winning three of their seven matches and drawing the final tie to draw the match overall. Gracie Boycott and Niamh Shaw led from the front with some excellent wins and spurred on the rest of the team; well done to all the girls.
