Dear Parents,

We were invaded by the Army on Wednesday who led our Upper School in a number of team-building events. The most gratifying thing about the day was the feedback from the Army personnel who praised the down-to-earth and resilient can-do spirit of our pupils. You can see lots of photos of this event on the school’s Facebook page.

Our Year 11s also spent much of the week pondering career choices including undertaking futurewise profiling. They have really embraced the Upper School uniform code and look very business-like for the year ahead. It will be a year of great challenge but we are confident they will do well in the new GCSE specifications.

Buddy Reading BeginsYear 6 joined Pre-Prep this week for their first buddy reading session of the term. The children read to each other, talked about their books and enjoyed spending their time together.

News from the Prep SchoolDear Parents,Kindness has been the theme across the school this week. Monday’s assembly focused on what this actually means, as well as giving plenty of examples of random acts of kindness, and how they have a very positive impact on both the giver and recipient.

Pre-School and Year 5 have had their first swimming sessions of the term and our children in Years 3 and 4 enjoyed the day at Meeth Nature Reserve yesterday, managing to avoid most of the heavy showers.

Congratulations to James, George, Angus, Gracie, Elsie, Alfie, Freddie and Jonah for winning last week’s Golden Stickers. Our first BAFTA (Behaviour Award For Thoughtful Actions) of the year has been awarded to Maddie, with the Manners Medals going to Tom. Willow has become our first Musician of the Week, as she played the piano beautifully at the start of Monday’s assembly.

Elizabeth Enjoys Gig Rowing SuccessUpper Sixth student Elizabeth Patrick has been gig boat rowing for the past year and a half and now rows for Boscastle Junior Pilot Gig Club. Last Saturday she was part of a crew of 7 rowing in The Great River Race in London - often referred to as London’s River Marathon, as it is a 22 mile race of over 300 crews rowing the Thames from Docklands to Richmond. The crew is made up of six rowers and one passenger to help with alternating rests, plus their coach who coxed. Her crew had a new best time of only 2 hours 37 minutes!

This was a great sporting accomplishment and a unique way to see London, something that few are able to do. The photos show them passing under Millenium Bridge and crossing by the Marshall at the finish in Richmond.

Well Done Angus!Upper Sixth student Angus was fortunate to be selected to play for a Southwest U18 team in this year’s Barcelona International Water Polo Turbo Cup Tournament, which sadly for him meant missing the first few days of this term!

They played club teams from Hungary, Spain, Serbia, Italy and France in the iconic setting of the Barcelona Olympic Arena, set high above the city. For the boys, playing as an Exeter

team which is Angus’s home club, this was their first experience of continental polo - and the physicality in their first game was a bit of a shock! However they learnt fast, giving as good as they had received, won two of their seven games and lost by only a few goals in several. Angus scored 3 goals, and earned himself at least 8 exclusions (yellow cards) as they adjusted to the more physical contact required to stay afloat, let alone win the ball and score goals!

An Exeter U18 girls team also took part. This was largely a GB girls team, and recently hardened to the physical style of play after coming 5th in a recent European tournament in Serbia which qualifies them for the Junior World Cup Tournament later this year. Sadly they lost to a Catalonian team in extra time in the final on Sunday, after 22 penalties were taken in a shootout! Many thanks to the college for allowing Angus to miss a few days to take part.

Notice to ParentsIf parents change their email addresses please could they inform the school so that our records can be kept fully up to date.Thank you.

Sports Fixture Updates:Please note that an updated list of sports fixtures for the week aheadis posted on the school website every Monday morning. This can be found under the ‘News’ drop-down menu entitled ‘Sports Fixture Updates’.

Active Summer HolidaysWe do appreciate being informed of the many and varied activities that our pupils get involved in during school holidays and free time, such as the two previous pieces.

Hockey ReportsU12/13 B v Mount KellyThis match was very tough for the Shebbear girls who had not played much Hockey before. We kept Mount Kelly at bay for the first 15 minutes, but once they scored they became increasingly confident and many more goals followed. Shebbear pulled one goal back when Isobel Watt broke free and scored. We won’t mention the score, but we look forward to playing Mount Kelly again later on in the season when we have had more practise. Player of the Match: Freya Fong.

1st XI v Mount Kelly 0-2This was a good game of hockey played between 2 teams of proficient hockey players – a far cry from just 4 years ago. Shebbear had been victorious in the last 2 years but Kelly have worked hard on their training and coaching and just about had the edge this time - winning by 2 – 0 after gaining the upper hand in the second half. The spectators should have been impressed by the quality of individual

skill, passing and endeavour shown by both sides. It was a close first half with both sides having chances to score but with Kelly having a full squad of 16 players and able to substitute with fresh legs the second half became more demanding for the Shebbear girls. Emily S, Helen D and Eevee B worked tirelessly in midfield, the youngsters Amy, Lauren, Sophie, Maddie and Connie gained great experience form the game and showed their potential. Kitty, Antonia and Rosie, in their second year in the team acquitted themselves well once again and Cloe, another youngster making her debut in goal, made crucial saves and should feel more confident in her ability. It was a great effort girls and a good standard of hockey. Our other games will be equally as tough as teams try to get their revenge on us for defeating them last year.

After such a great game containing the up most effort from every player, I look forward to developing a strong 1st team hockey side with the girls. I want to thank each and everyone of you for turning up and doing so well on our first game as a team, the unity will come. We can take this one on the chin and hold our heads high. We will just have to come back stronger next time, in the rematch against mount Kelly.

Surf’s up for the BTEC sport students ...The benefits of a practical based BTEC course were apparent earlier today when the BTEC sport students (below) enjoyed a surf session with Freewave Surf Academy at Widemouth Bay as part of their sports leadership module. Not only did students experience coaching and leadership, they also had he opportunity to discuss the the start up and running of a business in the sport and leisure industry. All students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, which will aid them in their BTEC course.

Rugby

1st XV Start a Winning SeasonThe 1st XV got their new season off to an excellent start in a warm up tournament. Shebbear beat hosts West Buckland 28-0 and then beat Mount Kelly 12-5. The 2017 captain, Siaosi (pictured with Will and Alessandro) was delighted with his side, and praised 1st XV debutants Oscar Skrbinsek, Will Cunningham, Tom Robins, Revell Groom, Alex Watling, Jack Ritchard, Zoltan Wagner, Eddie Jones and Jack Joslin.

Will and Alessandro shared the man of the match award, but there was fantastic play from a number of players. No.10 Will Cunningham scored the crucial try against Mount Kelly with a well judged chip and chase to secure the game. Congratulations to all.

Skills needs must drive careers education and guidance in schools

Key findings of a recent CBI/Pearson survey of employers about their views on careers advice in the UK include:

• 75% of employers expect to increase the number of high-skilled roles, but 61% fear that there will be insufficient skilled people to fill them

• Over half (58%) of employers plan to create new apprenticeship programmes and close to half (46%) expect to increase apprenticeship places

• Employers are actively engaging with schools to help support young people, with 81% of those surveyed having links to schools

• More than a third (35%) of employers say there is too little guidance and support on how to make work experience places worthwhile for young people

• Many employers believe there is a lack of awareness among young people of the education routes they need to take to enter particular careers (50%) and careers advice being poorly aligned to the sectors (49%), which leads to skills shortages
