Living an Authentic Life of Faith in Jesus

“God Is Light”

1 John 1

We announce to you what existed from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have seen and our hands handled, about the word of life. The life was revealed, and we have seen, and we testify and announce to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us. What we have seen and heard, we also announce it to you so that you can have fellowship with us. Our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that our joy can be complete. This is the message that we have heard from him and announce to you: “God is light and there is no darkness in him at all.” If we claim, “We have fellowship with him,” and live in the darkness, we are lying and do not act truthfully. But if we live in the light in the same way as he is in the light, we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from every sin. If we claim, “We don’t have any sin,” we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from everything we’ve done wrong. If we claim, “We have never sinned,” we make him a liar and his word is not in us. Christ always has been and always will be… He will personally touch and change our lives! We announce to you what existed from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have seen and our hands handled, about the word of life. The life was revealed, and we have seen, and we testify and announce to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us.

Fellowship with God and His people enables our lives to be joy-filled and complete. What we have seen and heard, we also announce it to you so that you can have fellowship with us. Our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that our joy can be complete. God is Holy, in whom no evil exists Light vs. Darkness This is the message that we have heard from him and announce to you: "God is light and there is no darkness in him at all." Is Our Faith Authentic? Hypocrisy vs. Authentic Living If we claim, "We have fellowship with him," and live in the darkness, we are lying and do not act truthfully. But if we live in the light in the same way as he is in the light, we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from every sin. The Holy Spirit enables us to live a life of Confession and Repentance. If we claim, "We don't have any sin," we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from everything we've done wrong. If we claim, "We have never sinned," we make him a liar and his word is not in us. _______________________________________________________________

For Personal or Group Reflection 1. Recall a time when you were afraid of the dark. What were your thoughts and feelings? What brought you out of that situation? 2. Why does John emphasize the way he experienced the “word of life”? (vs. 1-4) 3. What does it mean that, “God is light”? 4. How does that contrast with the darkness of this world? 5. What does it mean to “live in the light in the same way He is in the light”? (v. 7) 6. Reflect on the hypocrisy described in verse 6. How can you relate to that statement? Discuss times in your life where that hypocrisy occurred. 7. What hope does John give to us for when we stumble and do not live in the light? What action can be taken? (Must be taken)?

Experiencing God

New Adult Sunday School Class began September 7 but you can still join.

Jon the Open Door Class this Fall as we study this revised and updated version of this ministry classic by Henry T. Blackaby and Claude V. King.

Knowing God does not come through a program, a study, or a method. Knowing God and doing the Will of God comes through a relationship with a person. Through this relationship, God reveals Himself, His purposes, and His ways; and He invites you to join Him.

The Open Door Class is led by Don Morgan. Cost of book is $11. Please contact Don at [email protected] to order a book.
