Rota Views– 15 August 2017 – Issue # 7 Weekly News bulletin of the
Rotary Club Cape of Good Hope We meet on Tuesday evenings near the tip of the Cape Peninsula
at the St James Hotel, Main Road, St James @ 19:00 - Visitors are always most welcome Excellent meal served
We had a warm and friendly meeting last week which, thanks to Andy was made even more enjoyable. In
addition, we were graced by two Rotary wives, namely Jill Rumbelow and Carol Walters to add to the bevy of our
regular Rotarian beauties. It was lovely to have you with us ladies – please do it more often!!
Now we all know about the game Trivial Pursuit –only Andy could have sourced a CAPE WINELANDS Trivial Pursuit
game that we played last week. The members were divided into 3 groups and vied against each other for the
fabulous prizes – sponsored by Pres Marge – what a “sweetie pie” she is to have shared her left over induction
‘spoiling’s’. Thanks Marge – Pity you were forced to leave early
It was the night of the ‘secret’ Parliamentary vote of No confidence and this enjoyable game allowed us to think of
more pleasant topics such as – The oldest Wine Estate in the Cape (Groot Constantia – with its many prize winning
cultivars), the sweetness of Muscat d’Alexandrie and richness of a Cab /Merlot blend.
Next meeting – Tuesday 15th August
Our guest speaker is local film maker Bruce Macdonald who is about to release his new movie Samson.
He will speak on his ability to both produce and direct films, a role he excelled at in a previous
production of The Perfect Wave. Invite your family and friends to join us for what promises to be a
thrilling talk during which he will show us some trailers of his movies.
What our members have been up to this past week:
We were well represented at the Jolly Good Show held in the
Fish Hoek Civic Centre in aid of the Flame Lily Foundation of ex

ROTARY FAMILY HEALTH DAYS – 3-6 OCTOBER 2017
Bev and Susan met with our partnering NGO- Living Hope this
week and received the generous commitment of the nursing staff from their Home Based Care centres to work
with us over that period so that we can have sites in Masi, Ocean View, Red Hill and Fish Hoek central. With
luck, we will then have FOUR sites on four days with the addition blessing of volunteer overseas student doctors
to supplement the work force. Rotarians will be tasked only with administrative and support work.
No medical or nursing duties will be expected of any untrained person.
We are looking for sponsors of fruit, and other healthy “gifts” we can hand out eg: soap, toothbrushes and
toothpaste, or pens – or any other small items as a ‘bonus’ for attending to their personal health. Anyone got
suppliers, donors or other gifts in mind?
DRAGON BOAT REGATTA – 14 OCTOBER

members to do what they can to secure sponsored teams for the 20+

approach them if that is a hard one for you to do

DUTY LIST
NO COMMENT You've all heard of the Air Force's ultra-high-security secret base in Nevada known simply as - "Area 51?" Well, late one afternoon, the Air Force folks out at Area 51 were very surprised to see a Cessna landing at their "secret" base. They immediately impounded the aircraft and hauled the pilot into an interrogation room. The pilot's story was that he took off from Vegas, got lost, and spotted the base just as he was about to run out of fuel. The Air Force started a full FBI background check on the pilot and held him overnight during the investigation. By the next day, they were finally convinced that the pilot really was lost and wasn't a spy. They fuelled his airplane, gave him a terrifying "you-did-not-see-a-base" briefing, complete with threats of spending the rest of his life in prison, told him Vegas was that-a-way on such-and-such a heading, and sent him on his way. The day after that though, to the total disbelief of the Air Force, the same Cessna showed up again. Once again, the MP's surrounded the plane...only this time there were two people in the plane. The same pilot jumped out and said, "Do anything you want to me, but my wife is in the plane and you tell her where I was last night!

And finally….. Yesterday my daughter e-mailed me again, asking why I didn't do something useful with my time. “Like sitting around the pool and drinking wine is not a good thing?” I asked. Talking about my “doing-something-useful" seems to be her favourite topic of conversation. She was "Only thinking of me", she said and suggested that I go down to the Senior Center and hang out with the guys. I did this and when I got home last night, I decided to play a prank on her. I e-mailed her and told her that I had joined a Parachute Club.
She replied, "Are you nuts? You are 78 years old and now you're going to start jumping out of airplanes?" I told her that I even got a Membership Card and e-mailed a copy to her. She immediately telephoned me and yelled, "Good grief, Mom, where are your glasses?!
This is a Membership to a Prostitute Club, not a Parachute Club." "Oh man, I'm in trouble again,” I said, “I really don't know what to do. I signed up for five jumps a week!!" The line went quiet and her friend picked up the phone and said that my daughter had fainted. Life as a Senior Citizen is not getting any easier, but sometimes it can be fun.
