Debbies thoughts I asked one of our Confirmation candidates which particular Gift of the Holy Spirit she has been focusing on, in her preparation to receive the Sacrament next week. She told me that she was concentrating on the Gift of Wisdom. A big project for a little person! On Saturday 31st August, Monsignor Tony Ireland will hold his hands over our candidates, and he will ask God to shower our children with the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Gifts they will receive are mysterious’, invisible and invaluable. They are Gifts that will support them, lead them through the long process of growth and maturity that they are navigating daily, and equip them for their future faith journeys. Gods Gifts of Knowledge, Understanding, Wisdom, Fortitude (Courage), Counsel (Right Judgement), Piety (Reverence) and Fear of the Lord (Awe and Wonder in Gods Presence) will enable these children to live lives that are just and merciful to others, hopefully inspiring them to bring peace and joy to our challenged world simply by being themselves. They are Gifts that will be of immeasurable use to them throughout every single moment of the rest of their lives, infinitely more precious, and more useful to them than anything that their parents, or anyone else, could ever buy for them. My little friends announcement that she is focus- ing on the Gift of Wisdom made me think. Such a big word. Such a little person. Such an enormous journey before her. Each and every one of us lives, moves and has our being in Gods unimaginable love, and we need his help to enable us to realise it. One of our hymns says it all: Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, what God has ready for those who love him…”. This weekend we celebrate Migrant and Refugee Sunday. We will hear the stories of those who have lived the experience of being a migrant, and the story of a refugee seeking a safer life in Australia. The Prayers of the Faithful will be read in different languages, and following Mass, we will gather in the hall to enjoy food from our cultural backgrounds. In preparation for this day, I have spoken to several people from our community who have come from other countries, in some cases recently, and in others many years ago. Some are refugees, escaping situations I thankfully cannot imagine, some are migrants who have made a life as new Australians’. Others are tourists, simply visiting us before returning home. Listening to some of their stories, I am left amazed by the resilience of the human spirit. For the most part, living in Healesville, Australia, we live lives of relative safety, and even when things go badly wrong, for the most part there are services to support us and help us through our challenges. Those who are new to our country can often appreciate how blessed we are in a way that those of us who live without personal threat or imminent starvation may fail to see or hear. The moral questions that arise around our acceptance of those who turn to us for a safe place to live must be fully explored through the eyes and ears of Gods love, if we are to love as he loves. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are lavishly and freely given to us as Confirmed Catholics to help us to play our part in achieving justice, dignity and a peaceful solution for all when the big questions of life smack us in the face. Thank God!
