January is nearly behind us. Year 11 mocks are in the marking stage. Please look out for the report on these in your inbox. The

results will clearly identify weak areas and areas that need to be addressed. Hillcrest subject teachers will be able to give clear

guidance on this. We are always willing and able to advise students and assist in any way that we can. The Years 12 and 13 mocks

are now only a few weeks away, so all of our senior school students will have plenty of revision to do.

Outside of the classroom, many of our Year 9 and Year 10 students are at the MSMUN conference at the UN headquarters in

Gigiri this week. It began on Tuesday and will finish late on Friday evening. This excellent event simulates the activities of the real

United Nations Organisation and aims to develop the confidence and enhance the debating skills of all the participants. Many

have benefitted from this in the past and we anticipate similar

success from this year’s event. Thank you to Mr. Erick Huma

and Ms. Peris Wanjiru for giving up so much of their time to

provide this very worthwhile opportunity.

Today Hillcrest hosted the UK Universities Fair, with some forty

universities present to speak to students about the courses

that they offer and what it is like to live and work in the UK.

The school will also welcome visitors from across the city. It is

a significant awareness raising event for our Year 12 students

as their time at Hillcrest will be coming to an end in just twelve

months’ time. This year we are also including the Year 11

students to give them an opportunity to explore possibilities

JUNIOR SCHOOL

MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE

Since the beginning of term it has become extremely hot, dry and dusty and this is forecast to continue. Please can all students

bring water bottles which they can refill from our water dispensers and carry to lessons! Sun screen and a hat are essential on the

sports field. These will help ward off fatigue, nose bleeds, and headaches that some students have currently been reporting.

SIXTH FORM

UK Careers Fair: Well done to Mr. Sow and the careers team for organising this event where we had a total of thirty seven UK

Universities in attendance here at Hillcrest today. I am sure the Year 12 students found it useful as they narrow down their career

path and university choices. For the Year 13 students a decision on firm and insurance university choice should now be easier and

manageable. My thanks also go to the Year 13 prefects and the prospective Year 12 prefects for helping make sure that the day was

a success.

What A week of Sporting Success! Congratulations to all the seniors who have been amazing in the past week. For a start, the

Open Boys’ Hockey team who are on a roll, winning all their matches. My sympathies go to their opponents who have been on the

receiving end, namely St. Andrews, Turi who lost 2-1 and GEMS Schools 3-1. The Open Girls’ Hockey team have followed in their

brothers’ footsteps winning 2-0 in the game against GEMS School. Well done to everyone and I am blocking my evenings to be at

the field watching you dazzle. And for individual success Coral was the youngest, of one hundred and twenty participants, who ran a

tough trail run in the hills around Naivasha last Sunday. She finished second in the ladies race. Well done!

AS and A2 Mocks: The Year 11 students have finished their mock

examinations this week, so the Year 12 students (AS) and Year

13 students (AS & A2) should be anticipating theirs just around

the corner. These are scheduled from Monday 6th to Friday

17th February 2017. It is a school policy that any Years 12 and

13 students taking examinations in May/June, must sit for the

mocks. I wish them the best with their revision. Conscientious

effort now should pay off in terms of good AS and A2 mock

grades.

UNIVERSITY AND CAREERS NEWSLETTER

Announcements Canadian University Fair - The Edu Canada Fair will be hosted by the Canadian Embassy on 3rd and 4th February, at the

Intercontinental Hotel. The majority of the institutions from Canada will be participating and the Fair is open to everyone including

parents and students. This is a good opportunity for Year 11 and Year 12 students to explore Canadian unis, and for Year 13 students

to discuss any final application questions.

Project Kilimanjaro: Medicine Work Experience - Students aged 16+ who are considering a career in medicine/healthcare are

invited to apply to Project Kilimanjaro: an opportunity to travel with education, gain university interview training, practise hospital

work experience, and receive expert careers advice. Trips take place during April, July, or August 2017. Learn more here: www.

UK University Fees Status - On Thursday, 2nd February

at 5pm for 5:30pm, Hillcrest Secondary School will

be hosting an evening event on the topic of university

fee status in the United Kingdom. There will be a

particular focus on helping UK/EU expatriates maintain

their eligibility for gaining Home/EU offers from UK

universities. Students are also welcome if they wish to

attend.

UK Universities Fair – Today Hillcrest has been hosting

this year’s UK Universities Fair. We have welcomed

dozens of admissions tutors from universities across

the UK to meet with students and answer any questions

about their university, application requirements, and the

application process in general. Additionally, tutors have

presented to groups of students on topics including:

UCAS/Personal Statements, studying Law, and studying

in the UK. Please note that the event was for Year 11, 12,

and 13 students only.

Scholarships University of York - For international

students the University of York offers scholarships

which are based on academic merit and financial need

for the 2017-2018 academic year. These scholarships

are available to applicants who pay tuition fees at the

international rate. Applicants must be holding an offer

to study any subject full-time at York. Learn more here.

INSPIRATION FROM THE HEXAGON

HAS LIFE HANDED YOU LEMONS? “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade” this phrase is used as

encouragement in the face of trouble or adversity. Lemons are sour

and represent difficulty or challenges in life, while lemonade is sweet.

Many of you have recently sat your mock exams and are in the midst

of receiving your results. While some of you may be pleased with your

marks, there may be others who feel that life may have handed you

lemons. Remember, there’s still time to make lemonade. Learn from

your experience and make good of it.

Think about how you can make the most of your strengths, your

resources and how you can channel your positive attitude to achieve

constructive results. (And, if you already have your lemonade, don’t

let it go sour, keep it sweet.)

SWIMMING LESSONSThis is to remind you that Term 2 is predominantly a Hockey, Boys’ Basketball, Girls’ Football and Swimming for the whole term.

Swimming is taught during this term mainly because of the lovely sunny weather that is conducive to the same. Additionally, it

is also the main sports in the calendars of KSF, NASA, Nairobi Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) and various other

schools’ invitational swimming galas. Swimming lessons are compulsory and will be conducted during Games lessons for all year

groups. It is a curriculum requirement that every student learns how to swim during the course of their study at Hillcrest School. We

encourage all students to endeavour to acquaint themselves with swimming and survival techniques for their own benefit.

The schedule below will apply for swimming lessons for the different year groups and genders for this term.

Please remember to always carry the necessary kit required for your swimming lessons, and attend and participate in the lessons

as well. For those students who wish to join the vibrant Hillcrest School swimming team they are invited for extra sessions on

Monday through to Thursday from 4.00 pm to 5.30 pm. Thank you for your continued support in this matter.

SWIMMING TRAINING Swimming training for both Prep and Secondary students started in the first week of term and runs from Monday through

Thursday. All swimmers and particularly those preparing for any competition are encouraged to come for practices that usually

start at 4.00 pm and end at 5.00 pm for Prep swimmers; and 5.30 pm for senior swimmers. With many swimming galas on the

calendar, our overall performance will depend on the number of sessions attended by each swimmer.

GIRLS SPORTSIt has been a busy sporting weekend and week so far. From tournaments to league matches which have kicked off with zeal. Last Saturday there was a Football tournament at Braeburn Garden Estate for U19 girls. Hillcrest School was well represented by the senior girls who came out to play and hopefully kick start their 2017 season. Ably led by Reemi Shah and Jasmine

Jethwa, the team got off to a good start by drawing nil all with the French School. In their second match they lost 1-0 to a well seasoned side from Rusinga School, having given them a run for their money and getting near misses with their shots at goal. In the third match, Hillcrest drew nil all with Braeburn Gitanga Road before making a slamming come back by winning 2-0 against International School of Kenya. This allowed the team to sail

through to the quarter finals where we played against Rusinga. This time around we were better prepared for them and covered all our weak spots. The match ended in a nil all draw, forcing the winner to be decided on post-match penalties. This we did very well but unfortunately lost 2-3 to Rusinga. Despite being bundled out in the quarter finals, it was a good season opener and we look forward to better times in the league and over the course of the term.

I would like to thank Coach Andrew for accompanying the girls and congratulate the following girls for a good performance at the tournament; Miracle Denga, Michelle Harderwijk, Ivy Gitonga, Akola Munyiri, Karen Katahoire, Tamsyn Arendse, Shannon Reynolds, Lisa Kamau, Paula Kioko, Jasmine Jethwa and Radhika Rana who unfortunately got an injury a day before the tournament and had to stay off. In the hockey pitch, it was a mixture of results some good and some not so good.The U14 girls played GEMS on Friday 20th January and made a clear win - 5:0. This team is formidable with



up and coming players to watch out for, and whom we shall endeavour to nurture to their full potential. The U15 girls’ team played against St Andrew’s School last Friday and drew 1 all at the end of the match. There were many moments of brilliance but the execution was not good enough to give us the much deserved victory.

The U17 girls were the most impressive in their maiden match of the league. It was good to see them play their hearts out just after their stressful mock examinations period. They were raring to go and made that statement very clear by beating RVA 4-0. The opening goal was scored by Nicole Terblans, 10 minutes later Anushka Madan-

Handa sent the ball sounding into the back board and just before the half time whistle Ivy Gitonga sealed it with a well-executed goal from a penalty corner. At the resumption of second half there were many opportunities to score but we only managed to put another 1 past the defence and the goal keeper. I would like to congratulate the girls for a good start of the season.

The U19 team were not having a particularly good time on the other side of the field from the U17s. They had to settle for a 1 all draw against RVA who drew first blood just 3 minutes after half time. It seemed like an uphill task for the team and despite the numerous chances that they had,

luck only allowed them to score once in 60 minutes. It was a trying time but I believe the girls will rise to their potential as the season progresses. Well done to all the players for their good performance - keep training. Indeed we will live and carry out our motto for this term;

‘’Start strong, finish stronger’’

BOYS’ SPORT

This term’s hockey season has already begun on a good note with teams showing a lot of enthusiasm and commitment to do well.

This came out clearly with the number of students who travelled to play in important league matches at St. Andrews School, Turi.

I would like to report that both the U15 and U19 boys’ Hockey teams won their matches 1-0 and 2-1 respectively. U15 goal was

a classic goal that was scored by Shahryar Sulaiman after dribbling past three Turi defenders and pushing the ball past the

goalkeeper.

The U19 goals were scored by Roan Carr-Hartley who hammered the ball to the backboard from a short corner while the second

goal was scored by Yassin Gubara from flowing game situation. A big thank you goes to all the players who still managed to play

well even after such a long trip.

The U19 boys’ Hockey team also played in a friendly match against GEMS Cambridge School and managed a 3-1 win with Ledama

Masidza scoring a brace and Antoine Andre also scoring from open play. The U15 boys’ Hockey team also beat GEMS Cambridge

School 5-1 with Sohail Ahmed scoring a hat trick and Ryan Antony and Dev Shah scoring a goal each.

I would therefore like to encourage all teams to keep on with the hard work because the season has only just begun and there is a

lot to be played for. I would also like to thank all the parents who are supportive to the sports department by allowing their children

to represent the school.

Very soon, we will start participating in the Nairobi County Boys Hockey Championship, where we are the current defending

champions.

BOYS BASKETBALL

The boys’ Basketball season started in earnest with our U15 boys’ team overcoming their U14 counterparts 17-13 in a tough league

match played on Wednesday 18th January. On Wednesday this week the U15 boys’ team played R.V.A. and Thursday versus Rosslyn

Academy. Today the U17 boys’ team played against the German School and tomorrow they will visit the Nairobi International School

for a tournament.
