Orphan Disease Forum - Specialized Marketing & Sales: A Vision for Orphan

and Targeted Therapies When: Wednesday, June 20, 8:30 am - 9:45 am

Where: Room #209 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center

Website: http://mybio.zerista.com/event/member/46585#speakers

Donna LaVoie will moderate a panel at the 2012 BIO International Convention titled,

"Specialized Marketing & Sales: A Vision for Orphan and Targeted

Therapies." Biotech companies have paved the way for specialized marketing

approaches for orphan diseases since the early 1990s. Some companies have

developed life-changing therapies that truly change disease states. Today,

biotech/pharma leaders have jumped in. But can all companies large and small find

the focus for these orphan diseases and put the patient first? What are the obstacles

associated with creating a specialized marketing and sales effort for orphan drugs?

Gain critical understanding of how companies are employing specialized marketing

and sales approaches that are patient-centric.

Speakers on the panel include:

Using Systems Biology to "Fast-Track" Development and Approval of Novel

Therapeutics and Diagnostics When: Thursday, June 21st, 2012, 10:00 am - 11:30 am.

Where: Boston Convention & Exhibition Center

Overview of Systems Biology and how its application can determine more precisely

and quickly which biomarkers are relevant to specific diseases for diagnosis or

therapeutic intervention. This approach can also determine subgroups or different

genotypes within these diseases in developing a diagnostic test that will determine

whether a patient will respond to a specific drug with minimal side effects.

Drugs can now be targeted for a specific set of patients resulting in higher efficacy. In

return, the FDA requirements for the number of patients required for the phase I-III

trials may be smaller, the cost and time for R&D will be reduced and the approval time

will be shorter.

Device development demands precise, reproducible animal models with quantifiable

metrics. They allow for examination of mechanism of action and provide assurance of

safety and insight into efficacy. As device development and innovation accelerate the

challenges and demands on models rise as well. We live in a golden age of inspiration

and development and exciting time for biomedical sciences. The proof of performance

concept, safety and efficacy of emerging technologies is best evaluated in animal

models. Though increasing sophistication in device development, animal medicine,

and model design has provided sophisticated tools but, preclinical model development

still remain a challenge. Accepted models are limited as evolving technology is

extended into multi dimensional and complex therapeutic areas. Quantification of

effect creates further needs with far greater attention paid than ever before to precise

definition of device performance. For all technologies, biological responses must be

evaluated acutely and chronically. Thus, the animal model choice will depend on the

device and the parameters that need to be evaluated. This session will review the

different scenarios for effectively using pre-clinical testing as a basis for getting

regulatory approval for clinical (human) testing. You will hear first-hand experiences

about possible approaches and changes being considered.

As life science entrepreneurs build value moving from concept to strategy and then

execution, creating a pathway to a potential exit with a strategic partner is challenging,

especially since most of the entrepreneur's energy and focus is on execution and value

creation. Identifying potential corporate acquirers may seem like a simple exercise -

but developing the right awareness and working relationships leading to value-

maximizing partnerships or exits is one of the most difficult aspects of building a new

business. "From Startup Entrance to Strategic Exit" will outline key considerations

and practical tips on the funding perspectives of some strategic corporate concerns and

on the process necessary to build mutual value resulting in a successful exit.

The Time, Money, Value, Quality, Safety. These variables all describe the amount of

documentation required when specifying, engineering, building, and operating GMP

facilities. This program will investigate and provide open forum discussions on what

each department involved in delivering and operating quality systems for GMP

facilities expects as the minimum documentation requirements and why. In doing so,

we will investigate the blurring lines between commissioning and qualification. We

will also look at the real value that comes from spending countless hours developing,

reviewing, and final approval cycles of the finished document and possible ways to

remediate the process. The program is designed to provide insight to all members of

the delivery and operations team including operations, manufacturing, quality,

validation, and vendors.

Speaker: Dr. Jong Sung Koh (CTO of Genosco)

The pharmaceutical industry is facing unprecedented challenges to its R&D

productivity. Simply stated, without a dramatic increase in R&D productivity, today's

pharmaceutical industry cannot sustain sufficient innovation to replace the loss of

revenues arising from patent expiration of its blockbuster products. So, the key

questions are: when, how and by how much can the R&D productivity be

improved? There will be a discussion of recent strategies in drug discovery and

development to address the long-standing challenges to improving the R&D

productivity. Questions/Sponsorship opportunities: Contact [email protected].
