Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The day that we’ve long waited for is finally here! As you

entered either of our parish churches today, you found Holy

Water to refresh your dry spirit. And as you walked down

the aisle of the nave, you found most of the pews open so

you may sit where you like once again.

As I’ve previously explained on a couple occasions, we are

maintaining some socially distanced seating for the time

being for the benefit of those who feel more comfortable in

that setting. At Saint Mary’s, that will be the first few rows

on the south side of the nave (where the livestreaming

pedestal is located), and at Saint Michael’s, that will be the

short pews on either side of the nave. Please be seated in

those places if you would prefer to maintain social

distancing during Mass. We’ll continue to evaluate the

necessity of this measure as we move forward together.

In our return to greater normalcy, there’s one aspect of

“normal” which Bishop Thomas has asked that we not

return to. Some decades ago, many parishioners in several

parishes throughout the United States began to hold hands

during the praying of the Lord’s Prayer. The desire for this

gesture is understandable, as it unites us – and hasn’t the

Pandemic taught us how important human touch is? As

nice as the sentiment is, this gesture has never been

prescribed in the Roman Missal, which provides the

directives for the celebration of the Mass. The General

Instruction of the Roman Missal does, however, direct the

priest presider to extend his hands in what is called the

orans (prayer) posture during the Lord’s Prayer (#237). I

know that this may not be popular, though I would kindly

ask that we do our best to do as the Church asks of us in this

regard.

I will be away this coming week, and am deeply grateful to

my brother priests who have graciously offered to be

present to you during my absence. If you or a loved one

should have a life and death emergency – God forbid –

should have a life and death emergency – God forbid –

between June 7-14, please call Fr. Krzysztof (Chris) Kardzis,

the Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Fremont, at 419-332-7339.

Next weekend, my first pastor as a newly ordained priest,

Monsignor Michael Hohenbrink, will be with you to

celebrate the Sunday Eucharist. Thanks to Fr. Kardzis and

Msgr. Hohenbrink for their priestly charity!

Finally, this Friday is Bishop Thomas’ birthday. Feel free to

send him a card at the Pastoral Center (1933 Spielbusch

Avenue | Toledo, OH 43604) or post on his Facebook wall.

We’ll have the opportunity to wish him a belated birthday

when he visits Saint Mary’s on June 20, which we are looking

forward to!

Let us pray for one another in the coming week!

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Very Reverend Scott S. Woods, V.F.

Pastor

Help Needed! Saint Mary Parish is getting ready for the 100th

Anniversary of the dedication of our church building

June 20th, Bishop Thomas will be here for Mass, and help us

celebrate. There is much to do to get ready for this occasion. We

think it would be good to do a deep cleaning of the church, some

clean up and sprucing up will happen outside as well. We will serve

a picnic style meal after Mass on June 20, and have an Open House

of the Parish Office building to have everyone see what

improvements have happened there.

This can only happen if we get people to sign up for different tasks

that will need to be done. For example; church cleaning committee,

meal set up, serve the meal, clean up after the meal. There will be

sign up sheets in the back of church for these committees. Or contact

the Parish office with what you can do to help out. Please jump in,

and help make this a memorable occasion, for our parish.

Our Deacon to be, Mike Dazley, is inviting everyone

including this year's First Communicants to those

104 years young to discover the ministry of being an

Altar Server. Mike will be holding a Server 101 sessions

on Wednesday June 9th at 6:30pm on our Saint Michael

Campus. Please meet in the church. Serving Our Lord in

this way as a family is a beautiful thing!! We need adults

to help serve at our daily masses too!

Is God calling you to this ministry???

From the desk of Patti Wasserman… Uh-oh...no Family Faith Formation packet for

June, what shall we do??

For starters, I thought I could take the time to

learn about some Saints, Blesseds or

Venerables and share their stories with all of you. There are saints I didn’t even know existed until I

started researching! Saints are just like us. They come

from all walks of life and from all over the world. They

weren’t born saints, they weren’t perfect, but ordinary

people who lived ordinary lives. We are inspired, not by

overly glorified versions of saints’ lives, but by how they

chose to do the right thing in very trying times. First up is Ven. Matt Talbot who was raised in

a family of alcoholics in Dublin, Ireland. A

drunk by the time he was 13, Matt spent the

next 15 years focused more on alcohol than

anything else. An outpouring of grace when he

was 28 led Matt to take a pledge of sobriety

and he never touched alcohol again, but he

never stopped struggling against the temptation that had ruled his life for so long. Till the day he

died, Matt didn’t carry any money on him because it was a

temptation to go into a pub and have a pint. A single man,

he lived as a humble laborer, far more concerned with

prayer and self-control than anything else. “Never be too

hard on the man who can’t give up drink,” he once said.

“It’s as hard to give up the drink as it is to raise the dead to

life again. But both are possible and even easy for our Lord. We have only to depend on him.” Venerable Matt

Talbot is proof that being a follower of Christ doesn’t make

living a virtuous easy, it just makes it possible. Jesus fell

three times under his cross to show us what it looks like to

persevere in weakness, and Matt Talbot does the same,

he’s an example of what it is like to live with an addiction

without being ruled by it. As Catholics, we tend to look to

the saints for examples of bravery. We believe that even now they care for us by interceding for us before God. But

the saints do more...the saints show us how God's grace

can transform peoples' lives. Matt Talbot shows us how

God's grace can enter a person's life and transform them.

Let’s ask his intercession for all those suffering from

addiction, that God may give them the courage to

persevere on the hard road of recovery. His Feast Day is

June 7th Venerable Matt Talbot, pray for us! Upcoming Feast Days and Solemnities:

June 9th Saint Ephrem June 11th Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

June 12th The Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary
